Cummins ISX CM871 Technical Discussion

I've heard the EGR has to be disabled and the DPF ceramic filter has to be broken out.

But that's just a rumor I heard.

If @Rawze is on here could you please get ahold of me? I am having ecm issues etc on a truck I just bought my email is [email protected] or if anyone knows how to get thru to him please let me know I really need help
What you do is precede his user name with the @ symbol like this: @Rawze (I just edited your post to add the @ symbol, BTW). That oughta send him an alert next time he logs in.
But another thing you can do is quote one of his posts like this:
I am by no means an expert on this engine, but I do own one. That being said, .....
.. because by default I think people get e-mail notifications when they're quoted.

Hi I have a 2010 pete 389 with a 600 isx, 18 speed and 4:10 gears. I just bought the truck and was driving it home and got a crankcase pressure sensor light on. I took it to cummins they took a quick look at it outside said it needs a new engine. The engine was just done 70k miles ago under warranty do to a block failure. I took it home looked into it myself found that the crankcase filter was full of antifreeze which lead me to believe egr cooler. At this point I have decided to do a full delete. I removed all the parts from the engine and blocked off necessary equipment. I bought a used ecm from a guy I know that had the dletes in it already and was set at 600hp/2050 torque which i thought perfect cause thats how mine was set from factory. I put in the new ecm and fired it up. Truck automatically I noticed was running at 800 rpm all the time, I took it for a drive with a empty trailer behind and was getting some crazy boost out of it like a good 50 psi sometimes when pulling hard but when running normal was still at like 30 psi. I dont think this is right from what I have been reading on here. Also it seems to be burning really raw it burns my eyes when i start it in the shop. And after I shut it off blue smoke comes out of the stacks.I am worried about the truck and what to do with it, do I return it to stock or? Any thoughts appreciated. Or can someone please tell me specifically what I need to buy to tune the ecm myself? Also was it a bad idea to put a different ecm on my truck with the deletes done rather than doing it to my ecm? please help I cant have a 80k dollar boat anchor

I spoke to Rawze a week or so ago, and he is busy repairing his truck due to a deer strike. When he's busy at home, I know he doesn't frequent the forums as much as when he's on the road.

I was fortunate enough to have benefited from Rawze's generous help earlier this summer. I had a PDI delete done on my 525/1850 ISX, and experienced the same issues you are having - minus the crankcase pressure/coolant problems. I can without a doubt tell you that the EGR and DPF delete in your used ECM was done improperly. To this date, Rawze is the ONLY individual that has perfected the EGR/DPF deletes on CM871 ISX engines. PDI, Diesel Spec, Jball and the others are all using the same version of the same flawed delete, which is causing high boost issues - and eventually premature engine failure. With Rawze's assistance I was able to perform a "Milk Money" delete on my engine - for no more than the cost of a Data Link Adapter. Thankfully I now have a properly running engine.

My guess is that the used ECM you threw on your truck has a calibration file loaded in it that isn't compatible with the CPL (Critical Parts List) of your particular engine. The CPL is a list of varying parts that are used to build your engine. Different horsepower ISX's use different CPL's. The parts listed in the CPL can include a different camshaft, injectors, turbo, etc., so you can see how a calibration file written for a particular CPL can wreak havoc if it's loaded into an ECM that's controlling an engine built based on a different CPL.

Your absolute best bet is to reinstall the original ECM on your engine and perform Rawze's "Milk Money" delete. You can find the instructions here: http://od.lk/hrx If you're hesitant to perform the delete yourself, then your only other option is to wait for Rawze to contact you and give you guidance - although based on his past dealings, I seriously doubt he will perform a delete for you. In the meantime, I suggest you not apply more than 75% throttle, and keep your RPM's below 1500 to prevent excess head pressures with the current setup you're running until you can get the calibration file straightened out.

Hi, thanks for the info, I had thought it didnt really matter on the ecm because they were re programmed anyhow. This is good to know makes me wonder how those places all get away with selling used modded ecms eh! Do you thik it would work if I took my fuel and timing settings etc out of stock ecm and put those numbers in my modded ecm to correct it? I am stuck with this modded ecm now so thought I may as well try and use it rather than changing my stock one as it leaves me the option of throwing all me emissions stuff back on if i ever chose to trade it in.

If you want to keep your original ECM stock, you can take the modded ECM and load a factory flash file into it that is appropriate for your engine. Then, do a Milk Money delete on it and you're good to go.

Another option is you can backup and save the original file in your stock ECM and save it. Then you can do a Milk Money delete on it. If you ever decide to go back to stock for whatever reason, simply load your saved original stock file and you're good to go. Lastly, you can just take it to Cummins/Peterbilt and have the latest file loaded into the ECM to revert back to stock.

Also it seems to be burning really raw it burns my eyes when i start it in the shop. And after I shut it off blue smoke comes out of the stacks.

Did you remove the aftertreatment injector when you removed the EGR and DPF hardware? If you did not remove the aftertreatment injector (or at least remove and cap the fuel supply line to it) then you possibly could be getting raw fuel into the exhaust system due to a bad delete, or a faulty aftertreatment shutoff solenoid valve.

I'd get that "modified" ECM off your rig, reinstall your original and follow rawzes document. If you use his source files it makes this super easy, my first one took me under 2 hrs.

can anyone tell me what these codes i think are and whats need to b done to fix it if posible lol sid 254____pid 095____fail 04____ca6 249

Here goes. I have an 06 KW with the CM870 engine. When purchased it had the 475 calibration, fuel economy was not very good. Went to Cummins, tried a couple different calibrations and ended up with 550 calibration. Not much change in fuel economy. Tried the EGR unplug method with varied results. Ended up taking my ECM to PDI for a tune and also bought their intake. Truck never really ran very good afterwards, but my fuel mileage did go up so I've just put up with it for the past 2 years. Now my mileage is down again and I'm tired of the rough idle so would like to do it right. I have an in-line 5 on the way also have insight and calterm 3.4.1.003 (haven't been able to find the 3.6 version), also have some older In-Cal files but not the time fix tool. So where to start, I've read most everything Rawze has posted and have the Moma's milk money doc. I know from his posts that a lot of the info on the 871 is applicable to the 870. I was wondering if I should try to fix the current cal file, or start fresh with an original stock file? Can I get the stock file from In-Cal and work on it then when I'm done load it into my ECM or does the file have to be first flashed to the ECM before it can be modified. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
