EC's Going For It

Missed a phone call from the chassis shop Friday afternoon. Don't know if they were calling to say my truck was done or if it needed other stuff but I pulled an all nighter to make an Aldi run since I had literally zero food in the house then fell asleep.

I can't function after an all nighter like I used to.

I'm at a little bit of a crossroads with the pickup. I don't need a new windshield in the sense of it's not cracked or broken but I want a new windshield because it doesn't have the best clarity and whoever installed it used some shitty sealant that gets gooey in the heat and it leaks.

My inspection is due next month which means it's a good time because it'll get a new sticker, and it's extra cost to replace a sticker.

I also want to install one of my better dash cameras because they use adhesive mounts instead of a suction cup. They're basically a one and done. I tried to salvage the one from the Mack and it didn't go well.

Chassis shop said the kingpins were smooth sailing to replace and it didn't need anything else.Axle was in good shape bore-wise and everything is right on the money and I don't need any new steering parts. They pulled my hubs and checked the bearings and all that so the only extra parts cost was the wheel seals, making my bill as low as it could possibly be. My tires are wearing perfectly even except one side is 1/32 more worn than the other. I don't know why but I also don't know that these tires weren't swiped from other trucks by the dealer. I'll swap them out and see if they even out.

They said my kingpins still could have gone a little longer but it would be a judgement call at an inspection. I'd rather just have them rock solid with no questions.

It didn't lose significant coolant for the chassis shop so my mom taxied me there to pick it up and followed me straight to the dealer then brought me home. Not sure when they'll get it in but it doesn't do me any good to have it sitting here at the house.

They need to figure out my coolant loss (I won't call it a leak yet) and my rough running under load. It could be the EGR causing both issues. But they know more than I do about these trucks. I said this already but I'm recapping for my own good as well.

Got my estimate from the dealer. Technically the EGR cooler isnt known to have failed but its at the time and mileage that it would be dumb not to replace it now, because a related tube/hose is what's leaking coolant and it needs removed to replace it.

IOW its the day cab all over again as I suspected.

It also needs a couple sensors. One for the oil temp and one for the soot. Those were my check engine light.

And it had some stored codes for erratic voltage from my batteries being poor (according to the dealer). I knew they were getting poor, I was just hoping to get closer to winter before replacing them.

Anyway its looking like I'll be in it for a little over $8,000 and it should be done next week.

Salty but if it sets me up for more uptime in 2027 and beyond I'll be happy.

I need to get the day cab Mack running again. I had to pull out some mulberry bush and cut down a young Sycamore tree that was growing around it today. I don't want it to die in weeds. I feel like there's still hope for it.

Finally got the truck back home. Time will tell if it actually runs better but the EGR cooler is noted as also having a leak. When it leaks it sends the coolant into the intake to try to burn it, so that will obviously make it run worse.

There was the tiniest stumble that I always considered normal when I revved it up in neutral and that seems to be gone.

Need to get my annual inspection before I can get back to work.

Got lucky today. They had a 1230pm opening to inspect my truck today so I'm just waiting for them to finish lunch.

Was going to put my crap back in the truck hut then it rained pretty good. Didn't want my stuff soaked when it doesn't have to be.

All inspected up. Passed with flying colors, just need to still keep the brakes in mind. Down to 6/32 on the drives (all wearing perfectly even) and 10/32 on the steers.

I asked the shop to get me a quote together for a 3 axle brake job so I can brace for it.

First day back in the books. It was a full one by my standards. Parked with about 2 hrs left. 3 loads and one empty. All into and out of the same customer.

Other than I81 sucking ass sometimes, its about as gravy as it gets. Only thing better is 4 loads.

My check engine light came on shortly after I bought 11 gallons of $1.99 DEF. That was about 1/4 of the way through and stayed on until shut the truck off at home then turned the key on to check my mileage.

The light was for SCR inefficiency which means either bad DEF, a bad sensor, or a bad SCR honeycomb inside the onebox.

The cheap Def and the fact that it eventually went out points more towards that Def being cheap for a reason. It's usually $3.99 there and doesn't give me problems.

I have a brand spanking new unfamiliar dispatch tomorrow. Supposed to deliver to Breinigsville PA then go all the way down to Preston MD (the same place where the "Preston 151 Line" originated to pick up.

I dont have a clue how im gonna run from Breinigsville down without using 476. I'll flat refuse if they won't pay for the toll.

Had about an hour of drive left when I got back. It rained all day fluctuating between timid Rav4s and spun out BMWs. Mostly wasn't a big deal until I was coming back from Preston. The radio reported strong winds gusting to 40mph so I thought the bay bridge would be my biggest problem. Turned out fine. It was US 50 after the bridge then 97 and some of MD32 that was the biggest issue.

I as far as Breinigsville down, I ended up using 100 all the way into Delaware then going across 301 to 50. I probably used other roads too. 202 maybe. Those are the main ones aside from the local roads and streets.

One place I worked at would pay us a bonus for not using 476.
Every other company just paid the toll. But I was always a company driver.

We're supposed to pay our own tolls but they provide an EZPass and theyll reimburse when it isn't frivolous. Its a little weird how they do it. They'll deduct it from your pay initially then give it back later.

They used to pay all tolls without questioning it. It must have gotten out of hand.

I was going to use 476 but decided not to. But I couldn't avoid the US301 toll in DE or the CBB.

Sounds like the 407. I worked one place that had transponders and didn't really care one way or the other.

I worked a couple places that had transponders but said you better avoid that sumbitch like the plague unless told otherwise. Most don't even fool with that road. It's absurd how expensive it actually is.
