What needs to be done to attract more women drivers to the industry?

"Buster Brown" drivers are so full of themselves with their little buster brown shorts, pens, shirts, hats, clip boards.... attitudes... as if

I don't care what they pay, you ain't paintin' me all brown just for an ugly truck and ugly clothes
I call them gingerbread men.

i save my DVIR books. from the previous year, all i do is match them up with the same dates. hell, i can recycle DVI's for decades, and save all that photo copy paper as well..!!!!!!!!!!
We turn a check sheet in every day. It's their attempt at slipseat accountability but it's not really working.

actually, i never seen it work. and the one stinking time, someone else makes a note of some damage, THAT YOU NOTED several days or weeks ago, you get nailed, as you don't CONTINUE to make note of it, then the acehole that tries to admonish YOU doesn't even say "sorry, i forgot that"......

which is why, i really do have boxes full of (a whole years worth) of DVIRs........must have about (well soon will be) 5 years worth, with this current employer. when i leave an employer, and up till about 1 full year, i keep those, then toss'em....as i check my DAC yearly, and would have proof for a dispute....!!

I have no problem with a woman doing any job if they choose. What I do have a problem with is how women want the job and want to be treated equal to men but yet they want special provisions in doing so. That's not equality.

This is a legit message from a "Female" trucker... yeah, they don't need any extra help or protection. They got this..... uh huh

"I am 23yo female in decent shape. I had a semi truck follow me try cutting me off road from where I slept at in weed airport road ca rest area. I had other drivers knock on door and slash tire. I had a near critical event going 25mph on off ramp. I seen accidents to where car parts were spread from south I-5 to north I-5.

I know this is part of the job. I enjoyed the freedom and traveling but felt anxiety. I thought about teaming because I am a good driver but feel better having someone to talk to or not be alone however I heard a lot of teams that turned me away.

My backing is not the sharpest, could use more practice in that. I avoided truck stops. I'm not sure what I am asking other than myself if the comfortable comes eventually or if I would stay tense.

Just sounds like a nervous rookie.

True....

But..

You think she'll pull through or back out?

See, this could apply to a dude also, but the thing is, in my estimation, the dude, as shit mounts up, is going to get pissed and fight back at some point and 'man up'

a woman....

I'm not so sure... if I were a betting man...

I've said it before. Ive seen some hard-ass women out here that would throw down a beating or die trying.. but I've also seen the ones that would not do this job unless they thought that a man was going to be around to carry them through the tough shit. I know these types, personally.

If they can go OTR, it's a miracle, but they will be a dispatchers nightmare.

Local? Maybe just a PITA... daily

When my sister got her drivers license, my mom insisted that she know how to change a tire before they let her go anywhere by herself.

My dad was too lazy so I taught her. (I was 13). He did say "make sure she does it all herself, don't just demonstrate, but double check to make sure she gets the lug nuts tight enough".

So, as I expected, they weren't tight enough so I had to explain to make sure the tire iron is on the nut properly, then apply downward pressure on it with her foot and put all her weight on it while holding onto the car in case it slips off the lug nut.

(which reminds me, I should probably ask her husband to find a new method for her to use, because nowadays she's so fat she's likely to snap the studs off doing that.)

Anyway a few months later she & a couple of other girls were getting into her car after school and there were 4 or 5 of the supposedly masculine ROTC boys standing around a flat tire on one of their cars. One of them suggested seeing if Mr Quigley (the autos teacher) was still there.

So my sister changed the tire for them. :D

She still tells that story today.

I was at her house in Virginia about 3 years ago, and her 16 yr old daughter had just gotten her license and my sister had flown to Tennessee to buy my grandma's car and drive it back for her.

Lucky brat,... 1997 Buick Lesabre, mint condition, very low miles, leather interior, all the bells and whistles.

Anyway I asked her (in front of my sister) if she knows how to check the fluids & change a flat tire.

She said "yeah my mom taught me all that stuff". ;)

Good shit.... good shit...

That's the way it should be, right?

How many women out of 100 can change a tire by themselves?

How many can check the oil and water.. or even put air in a tire, let alone, know how much to put in?

See, people think we hate women in our industry, but I got nothing but mad respect for any person that carries their own weight (well, all joking aside)

I did some time in dispatch.

All drivers cry the same.

If I walked into a baby nursery at a hospital I would tell my girl... shit, I feel like I'm at work.....

KNOW THIS OPINION WILL RUB A FEW PEOPLE WRONG!

As a society we as humans have been programed with our thinking....when it comes to ones gender.
Little do we realize we are but a small island on our very own in life....As in single individuals....and no two individuals can or will ever think the same....with that said, the avenues of communication can break down very quickly. Learning to take care of one self is important to one survival. Teaching and learning comes with many different lessons and experiences in life.

One day maybe your life is all peaches and cherries and the next day you awake to find your self all alone in this big world. It will be threw those you learned from that will make a difference in that new lifestyle. A male and a female can learn much from each other.....and share many experiences together. It is when we can see people as only human beings that knowledge become valuable.

So when you take that step forward to lend a helping hand to another....Teach as you go.
A word of kindness can move mountains and the greatest gifts can be learning from another person.
Thank you for allowing (((ME))) to rant a bit here!!!!

As you acknowledged, that could apply to any man as well. But no, lots of people drop out of trucking because it isn't for them. And the reasons for it are varied.

My method for sticky tandems is two-fold: If the handle pulls and latches but the pins won't release, I tap the pins with a 4 lb hammer. If the handle won't pull out far enough to latch in the release position, I pull it out as far as it will go and snap a vise-grip on the shaft of the pull handle right up next to the slide rail. Then, I go to the cab and give the trailer a push backward and a pull forward. Usually, that's all it takes. If not, I pull the handle out again, and move the vise-grip up the shaft. Might take a few cycles, but unless something is broken, it'll move the pins.

Some spray oil like WD40 on the moving joints helps, too.

I refuse to have anybody hold that pull handle out while I put the truck into gear. I refuse to hold that handle while another driver puts the truck in gear. It's one of the stupidest ways to get hurt or killed because it's completely unnecessary. Yet, people still get hurt and killed "helping" each other in this manner.

Helps if you got room to do a couple figure 8's when they are stuck as well. Sometimes this will free them up when no amount of tugging will do anything.
