Tonight my grandma seemed perfectly normal except she couldn't talk or write. She can read though. She was talking and her facial expressions were the same as ever, except the words were just babbling. The neurosurgeon came in to check on her & I asked him how he can tell if a patient's incoherent speech is a neuro problem or if the patient is just pentacostal. He didn't answer. He just got a smirk on his face. I hope he's not pentacostal.
She was talking her head off & it was mostly gibberish but every once in a while she'll say something completely coherent.
When we first got there tonight she was fussy & speaking gibberish. She said "tee tee tee" while looking up at the TV so I turned it on & Jeopardy was on. She said "jep..ar..dee" a couple of times. After a while she said "OPERA" really loud & clear. I looked up at the TV right as somebody pushed the button & said "What is opera?" and Alex Trebek said it was correct. Then during a commercial she pointed at the TV and said "Monk". It was a commercial for the show "Monk".
A little while later a nurse came in & said "I need to draw some blood is that ok?" Grandma said "NO" and smiled.
Then she noticed Mrs. Duck's necklace with a cross on it & she said something I didn't hear, but Mrs. Duck said it sounded like "Christian". So she pulled the cross out & showed it to her & Grandma said "Ohhhh, .... spurty!". She has never said "pretty" in her entire life. It's always been "purty", so "spurty" might've been "it's purty".
I showed her a piece of paper that had my sister's name on it & her phone number & said "Who's number is that?" and she said my sister's name. So she can read. I handed her a pen & asked her to write her name but she wasn't holding the pen correctly & it just made a scribble. I tried putting the pen in her hand correctly but she was still making writing motions with her hand so I gave up.
She has a feeding tube going into her nose because she can't swallow. A nurse was using a big syringe to push what looked like baby formula into the tube & she said "We need to fatten you up" and Grandma laughed.
So there is clear evidence of comprehension. The neurosurgeon said she's doing better than he ever expected & said she might even make a full recovery.
