Drive For CRST?

I worked at walmart for 8 months, had my own apartment, etc. I went to truck driving school for CRST to get a job that would actually pay me more than barely enough to live.

I made more money working at walmart for two days than I did most of the weeks I worked for CRST.

I could never afford to eat, I had to make constant advances. I wasn't eating expensively, infact I was eating some of the cheapest, unhealthiest crap on earth. My deficit was usually around $300, at one point it was over $700 ($200 over the hard limit of $500. I had to cry to dispatch to get money so i could get stuff on the bus or eat)

I was forced to leave a truck at the TA in Troutdale, OR because a co-driver abandoned me after 3 days. (dispatch basically told her to abandon me), and take a bus home. I lost anything that I couldn't fit on the bus. My TV, fridge, a pillow, dvds, food, etc. Mostly random crap, but the TV, fridge, and food really made me mad. I was a fully qualified driver with a CDL, but they insisted that i couldnt drive by myself. I was left there for a week, they acted like they were trying to find me codrivers but they werent even trying. Seriously, i was supposed to go home in less than a week, and they were trying to get me a codriver that lived near where i live (michigan). wtf? all the codriver candidates thought i was crazy. so i got bussed home.

I was going to quit, but I found out that even though the contract you sign with CRST is non-exclusive and says nothing about your being unable to work for another company, it is just that. They will sue anyone who hires you. They shouldn't have the legal right to do that, but guess what? They successfully sued JB Hunt and Werner over this.

So I gave them another month. I got a total alcoholic co-driver, never got enough miles to clear my deficit and get a paycheck (i was getting about $200/week taken off my deficit, and then having to make another advance every week to eat). We sat lots. I gave them another chance. I didn't have much longer to go. Atleast I now had a brand new 2009 freightshaker that ran perfectly up grades. Oh, and he abandoned me and the truck and they let me drive it home.

I got a co-driver who just came from JB Hunt. I was fine with this guy except he exagerated everything. OMFG I GOT AN INFECTION IN MY FINGER IM GONNA LOSE MY FINGER OMG, or OMG IM TWO MINUTES LATE ON A DELIVERY OMG (im never late on a delivery, but TWO MINUTES? hell, the place hadnt even opened the gate for the day when we got there). So we were going to keep driving until i got my 8 months in and then i was gonna quit. I went home, parked the truck at home. He kept telling me that he had no interest in parking the truck at his house, but all of a sudden on our way home, hes trying to get me to let him take the truck home. im like, wtf, you have to fill out the paperwork like a week ahead of time to get approved. so i park it at my home.

Next thing you know, im notified that hes going to become a lead driver and take my truck from my driveway. I'm starting to get pissed. Again, I wanted to quit but i didnt. I had 5 months in at this point. Oh, and we got 6000 miles a week for the last 3 weeks i drove with this guy. got a $400 week at the end of that, after clearing my deficit. most i ever made from the company. second time i ever got a check after training!

I got a new codriver and went with her in a rental car to pick up a truck in pennsylvania. I was driving. As soon as she gets ni the car, shes all back seat driving, telling me where to go, etc. I never just jump in a car and start driving without knowing where im going. shes like "YOU DIDNT WRITE INSTRUCTIONS DOWN".....the route only involved 3 roads, all familiar roads, i didnt need to write anything.

So uhm, as soon as we pick the truck up, its a total pile. Half the cabinets are missing, and we thought it had roaches. She went all psycho on me and decided she wasnt driving with me, and even called the cops on me over nothing. And uhm, apparently she brought the roaches with, because they dissapeared after that.

I told dispatch that if i didnt have another codriver set up the next day, i would quit. Well, they found me someone. He came out the day after that day. Everything was fine, we sat at a truck stop for the weekend with a couple of city work loads. I do the city work loads, then go to the shipper to pick up a real load. 10 miles on the way to pickup the shipper, he flips out and starts screaming at me over nothing. I turned around and went to the terminal to drop him off. They tried to talk me into keeping driving with this guy. Seriously, if someone flips out in the first 2 days, whos going to be dead after a week? god... I knew about their policy of not soloing without 6 months experience, but i told them they were going to let me solo until i found a codriver (i was dispatched on solo freight at the time...as the usual), or i was quitting. Well, i quit. Then they tried to tell me that it was my expense to get home, and that I needed to get the hell off their truck so they could use it. I reminded them of how much they had been paying me. I looked up in the drivers handbook the obscured policy on this, which says that as long as you turn the truck into a terminal, you will be provided transportation home. It's appendix C by the way. It was only then when i was given a bus ticket home. I was fully planning on occupying that truck until they got me home if they didn't.

I lost my home for these people, and what did they lose for me? Nothing. Now I owe them $4500, and if i want to stay in the industry, i have to pay it in full. With what money? You never paid me that much!

I'm going to orientation with JB Hunt tomorrow. I lied and told them that i paid CRST off. Hopefully they won't catch me and i'll get a job. I don't think they'll even confirm it, they had me a bus ticket within hours of applying... Everyone says that JB is a horrible company, but I knew they'd get me a job fast. Atleast I'll be able to quit them without a contract hanging over my head if it doesnt work out. I'll leave after the first month if i need to. I don't have anything to lose at this point.

anyone had problems with crst?im looking at going to school then working for them..

Holy shit , where do i start? first off, yes CRST does suck, and then spit it back in your face. I looked at them years ago and even believed their lies to get me to orientation. After all the b.s. they tried to feed me(biggest was they way paid) i left on the second day of orientation about lunch time after telling them this company wasn't for me.(another guy also left and i gave him a ride to the house since it was on my way). Be careful at jb orientation. they are famous for bringing in 30-40 people on monday and by thursday only a small handful are left. only 6- 9 will make it thru the week. They are sent home for failing drug tests, lieing on applications, or other various reasons. if they want to know something about you they will find it and depending what it is you may be sent home. and this does go on your dac. all the other info you posted , i am not touching that. all i will say is "WOW".

OH MY GOD!!!

CRST is not a good training company. I know, because they trained me.

I went to the Kirkwood campus in Cedar Rapids for the 2 week course and signed a contract for 1 year. I understand the contract period has changed since I went thru the program, and was paid .18 cpm. I had a hard time making it, and I had no bills to pay. But there was a man in the class married with 9 kids that went thru it too and his wife didn't work.

Most people did not honor that contract and left early. I stayed with it.

You wont make money for the 1st 6 months.

After that, I did well with them.

I cannot explain why they treated you like this. I personally never had a problem with them that I could not settle by making a call or 2, and those problems were rare. You should have called Jim Chapman (JC) if your dispatcher was giving you problems. He is very good at his job and will bend over backwards to help.

I am considering going back to their solo division.

JB sent me home but did not catch my lie. They sent me home because i didnt have enough experience without an accident. But i told the recruiter all about my experience and the one minor accident i had on the phone, and they said it would be fine. I'm a little pissed because they got me all stressed out over road tests for nothing. (i passed the road test just FYI). But, JB treated me great, got me a bus home, paid me $50 and made sure i took my free lunch before i left the terminal.

FYI, their solo division is dead. They prefer to give solo freight to team drivers.

I went through 3 dispatchers when i was with them, which is another of the reasons they made me want to quit. My first dispatcher was great, except for the "omfg you cant solo" thing. I went through hell to try to get back on his board, but his ops manager said he had too many drivers. My second dispatcher starved me for the first month i was with him and then got me 6,000 miles a week the next month, and my third dispatcher just didnt understand the meaning of "i cant drive with this guy.". He never even dispatched me. Night dispatch dispatched me. (i was with this guy for less than a week) just so you know, they were Bill Mcguire, Chris Oshea, and Robert Bain.

The omfg you cant solo bull was coming from management.

Honestly, if they would have just found me a codriver that was a decent person, knew how to drive a truck, was here for the purpose of making money (ie, didnt spend 3 hours shopping in walmart when we had things that needed to be done, got loads picked up/delivered on time every time it was possible, filled dispatch in on everything that they needed to, and didnt keep 3 feet of crap piled up on the dash), and left me with Chris Oshea, i could have dealt with them. After the first month with him, if Chris had 6,000 miles a week to give me, he gave them to me. That's enough miles to make up for any bad weeks (i know they happen). I don't know what he was trying to pull that first month, maybe it wasnt his fault. he sent me messages telling us about how we were such a great team several times a week.

well that is good they got you home. I have no issues with JB, i worked for them years back for just under 2 years and made good money.

so what is your plans now?

I have to get a non trucking job so it wont matter when my license gets suspended for an unpaid ticket in a week and i have to drive without a license. thats what my plan is.

just don't get caught by the 5-0. it will cost you more to pay the ticket later and cdl reinstatement and late fees than to just pay it when it is due.

Trucking and fines seem like such a catch-22. that ticket is $160 but thats most of what i made in my entire trucking career. i also had to drive 200 unpaid miles to talk to safety about the accident in conjunction with it. I will never let them do that to me again. If my dispatcher ever asks me to go out of route and refuses to tell me hell pay me, im going to park the truck until he changes his mind! thank god they let me keep the load, their pennsylvania outbound freight sucks!

Anyway, my grandma offered to pay it. I dont think she realizes its $160, but i talked to the kern county court house and they told me that i can send them a letter and include $50 and theyll work out payment plans with me, and my license will not be suspended. my license also will not be suspended if the letter comes a couple of days after the due date.

im still freaked out though, i feel like theyre gonna screw me. it is california.

Oh, so back on the crst subject. I called driver collections today, and talked to the driver collections chick about paying, since i got my bill yesterday and it says i have 2 weeks before they send it to collections. I remember that she told me that i'd have to leave the industry to make payment arrangements. Anyway, i asked her about that and id only have to leave the industry for two months, even if i keep making payments after i come back into it.

I'm NOT going to leave the industry for two months if i can get a trucking job, but if i just happen to get a non-trucking non-temporary job, i suppose i can just work there for 2 months. Great.

sounds like you have somewhat of a plan. hope it works out for ya.

5-0 is the po-lice.

My first dispatcher was great, except for the "omfg you cant solo" thing.

I could never understand that either. After you finish training, you are driving solo, for all practical purposes. It's just a little intimidating at first in that there's no 2nd set of eyes to get you out of trouble if you get lost or turn where you shouldn't have (BTDT, believe me, and it's no fun...).

My friend does the Lease Operator deal with them. Drives a dry box. She has been stuck at home for 11 days with no load. I think today will make 12 or 13.

i had to back up 3 miles once. yeah, definitely BTDT.
Historic Route 66 Business Loop in Middle of Nowhere, Texas. I saw some trucks parked in a lot so i pulled in so i could stop and go to the bathroom! (i had to go bad!) pulled out, there were no signs whatsoever. it was the middle of the night. i couldnt see much. there was route 66 business loop and what looked like some ramps. i only saw the ramp i got off and what looked like another ramp. i went down what looked like another ramp. it was going in the wrong direction, but it was parralel with the highway and there wasnt anything in the other direction, and well, most ramps in texas look like this. i figured id just have to go under the highway and turn around and get on or something similarly crazy, right? maybe theres even a big loop on the ramp like we have in michigan.
so uhm, what it turned out to be was a 3 mile long road that went to nowhere. it was one lane, two way, had NOTHING on it. NOTHING. went NOWHERE. this road had no purpose.
it even had signs saying SPEED LIMIT 55 and ROAD ENDS, but why? wtf?

so yeah, i had to back down it. the other ramp was in a weird place that i just didnt see. like i said, not a single sign or lights!
totally not my fault, but maybe i shouldve stopped and tried to figure out what was going down when i saw a sign that said "ROAD ENDS IN 2 miles". i thought that meant it turned into a highway ramp in 2 miles!

next time ill pull over on the shoulder of the highway to go. im not going on those weird texas ramps unless theres signs or lights.

where is home? did she try deadheading to an area with freight? some owner op dispatchers at crst dont seem to understand that sometimes you have to deadhead to make money. she shouldnt have to deadhead anywhere until they tell her she has a load there, but the dispatchers are morons. My trainer was an owner op, and they wouldnt set him up with loads that needed him to deadhead more than 50 miles. in particular, one time he said "IM GOING TO ATLANTA, FIND ME A LOAD THERE OR SOMEWHERE ON THE WAY! AND IF YOU FIND A LOAD IN MIAMI WITHIN AN HOUR ILL TURN AROUND!"

so yeah, he deadheaded 700 miles and we had a load a couple hours after we got there. crazy. oh and then they tried to give him a load to laredo, which not only would he not have made money on after that deadhead, but he would sit some more after he got to laredo.

im not suggesting she drive 700 miles without being dispatched. that was kind of insane, but he got a load to california out of it, and made money (barely). most places are a lot closer to areas known to have good freight than that!

butshe could tell them that shes willing to deadhead a couple hundred miles if they give her a long enough load that shell make money (and maybe even get put in a high freight area)

CRST sure has changed since I worked for them, but that was 10 years ago. I can see how stuff like that would happen to you. Sorry to hear about it...:(

I started with them back in 1998. Got out of the military and wanted to drive a truck. I was living in California at the time. They paid for the training and I went to school. I was supposed to spend a year there, but only made it four months. I had to pay back $3000. At the time you had to pay the finance company that paid for the school.

I hope you can find another company to work for. Not all companies are as bad as CRST. I might have stayed there longer if I could have found a decent co-driver.

Run as fast as you can(the other direction) My wife and I just quit them last Friday they are the worst company I have ever seen in my 10+ yrs of driving we averaged 2200 miles a week for the last 2mth's they have not refunded us motels, tolls or breakdown pay for the last 2 mth's. If anyone is happy there it's because they don't want to work or they want to go broke. You get paid twice a week they just can't tell you which week it's going to be. Good luck
jfmotoman if that company has'nt refunded you any of the money they owe you then I highly suggest taking them to small claims court.Trust me you'll get your money.I had to do that with Gainey. They did'nt pay me for tolls charged me with their trk repair and did'nt give me a final check.I filed charges twice the first was only for the trk repair but then when they witheld my last check that's when I got ugly about it.They thought I was bluffing untill an officer personally gave Mr Gainey a summons to appear in court. He sent me the money he owed me along with a hand written apology from him.I won't tell you what I told him he can do with his apology. The bottom line is trucking companies don't want to be taken to court because they're afraid someone will be the whistle blower on how that company treats the drivers. If noone takes companies to court, they will always steal from the drivers because they know they can get away with it.I thought about not dropping the charges even after Mr Gainey paid me just for all the emotional distress he and his corporate idiots caused me.But the better off I am not having to ever deal with them ever again.

I am not saying that CRST is not bad. I've never drove for them. However, It sounds to me like you have done a lot of complaining. and then on top of that, lying to JB. Probably wasn't smart. I'm sure I will get a lot of flack for this post, but something to keep in mind : Trucking isn't easy. As a matter of fact, it's very hard to break into, and then it doesn't get much better, but seems to me like your sort of making things harder on your self.

For what it's worth, good luck in what ever you do.

Duster

I'm not even going to bother answering this. Well, I'll answer it partially.
Yes trucking is hard. JB never caught my lie, so I don't see why that was a problem. They sent me back over something retarded, which they could have just turned me down over the phone over, instead of wasting my time with orientation. I can handle trucking. I can't fucking handle CRST. It cost me about $10,000 to work for them for 5 months. It takes me a whole fucking year to make that much money at any job ive ever had before, and i LOST that much in 5 months. Last i checked, the purpose of a job is so i can make money. I wouldn't have had any issue with it if i didnt make much money because i was starting out, but i wasnt making a DIME. I'm sorry if you're too stupid to understand that.

Well, like I said, I wasn't trying to be insultling, just pointing out that it's not easy to get by in this industry and it's getting harder everyday. As for calling me stupid, well, that is certainly your opinion and your welcome to it. However, I've never had a job that only paid 10,000 for a years worth of work, as well as the fact that I havn't had ever had the need to lie on an application or have I had to drive with out a liscense.

I'm not nor have I called you stupid, just suggested that perhaps, trucking just wasn't for you. Have a nice day.
