Winter Driving

Texas DOT sucks! When it comes to ice they are still in the ice age. Our fwys are still backed up for miles at least I know I 20 is. For some reason they dont do anything about the bridges thats what is causing all the problems.

come on now temper temper LOL. ask yourself the if they did something about the roads and bridges wouldn't that make to much common sence:confused-96::confused-96:. and you can't use chains in the lone horn state because you might destroy there beautifull roads screw that to LOL

It's not really possible for a "trucking school" to teach winter driving. Oh, they can give theory and all.... but it's one of those things that has to be learned "hands on". Y'see, there's several kinds of "snow" and each requires just a little different style of driving. Even "when to park" is a judgement call that varies widely. I'd probably keep going in conditions that would have some of you hunting a parking spot simply because I spent most of my driving life in far harsher conditions. But, I think early about stopping down here because the roads would be full of others who seldom see snow/ice and thus could easily take me out.

Plus, in Canada, you can have a drag-azz, total whiteout blizzard right where you are and 100 miles down the road have dry roads. I learned to read "sundogs" real early. :D

Common sense here never. The bridges here have about 8 in of ice everywhere else is clear. Common sense! Hahaha! Lmao!

It's still fun to watch the "Front wheel drive is more stable" bunch get surprised when they let off the gas and the back end comes whipping around on em.:coocoo: Likewise the "I've got a 4wd SUV, I can drive at 80mph" crowd. :biglaugh:
The only time I ever drove a 4WD in snow was a Dodge Ram out in Baltimore. Going down a hill my brakes kept locking up & if I let go of the brakes the rear end would start sliding from the engine braking effect. I put it in 4HI & immediately it started slowing down. I pulled it down into "2" and the braking force got even better. I was amazed that I could engine brake so well when the regular wheel brakes were useless.

A while later I was in a Walmart parking lot or something & it hadn't been plowed & the snow was pretty deep. I wasn't from around there & didn't know how to get out of the parking lot & back to the little road going out to the street. Everything was white & it was bright as hell out, middle of the day. With snow drifts & stuff I couldn't even tell where the curbs were until all of a sudden my head bounced off the ceiling. I ended up going right over one of those 12 foot wide strips with curbs on both sides & wood chips & dead flowers in the middle. I think I ran over a little bush too. I was amazed that the truck didn't get stuck. A 2WD would've gotten stuck. Then I started laughing as soon as I realized what might happen if somebody in a car or 2WD pickup tried to navigate that parking lot by following my tire tracks.

It's the government a bunch of brainless bastards. Felt good to go to vegas and back I got to put my foot in the floor and go 70 mph and not feel like I was driving a freaking prius doing 55 mph :D I carry chains but I don't need em:stirpot2:

Nope, put your dunnage down then drive the dual up on it...lol
That works if you're only chaining your outside tires. I chain my four rears to keep the chains from damaging my fenders. I have my fenders set too close to my tires to trust the chains will not slap them.

Some schools do have skid pads. The instructor can lock up any axle they want and watch the students reaction.

Skid pads are great.... but.... the point of knowing how to do "winter driving" is to avoid being in that situation. There's no easy way to learn that. No computer program, no "simulator", no "shortcut".

Dang it box gurl you put the dunnage under the outer for the inner..lol

I use double chains. Gotta do both tires at the same time.

And it's too danged cold to be chaining an Injun to the catwalk. Apes have more hair than Injuns. Therefore, it'll be you ridin' on the back porch, Banana-Breath.
