So, we are now the owners of a new hybrid Prius!

hey Mike I see where your tinker toy has a recall.
seems that the hamster that powers it tends to keel over from the effort, lol
no really there is a recall for some problem with the airbags

Looks like electric is becoming a reality finally.

A big gas price increase could throw a wrench in this though.
electric is hear to stay!!! manufactures have improved the systems and given them longer range in electric only mode. i remember testing hybrids when they first came out. it wasn't a pleasant experiance there was a rubber band effect between the two motors and there was nothing to fill in the gaps for things such as turbo lag and engine lag . and for shits and giggles i ran the numbers to see what the payback time would be on a tahoe it was something stupid like 20 years . and look down the road like 10 years from now what makes people think the the EPA and CARB won't make some stupid law to get these current models off the roads:confused-96:. we just bought a bimmer I8 and the fuel economy on it is incredible going at highway speeds the computer was spitting out 46.7 MPG well until i put it in beast mode and used all the power plants then it drops down to 29 MPG:rolleyes:. the eletric motor can go upto 75MPH in all electric mode for 20 miles then the gas engine kicks in or you can use the electric motor and the gas engine and battery bank all at once:drool:. and it's fun to drive cause it's like a rocketship the torque is there and take off is instant there's no waiting for the engine to get upto the rpms needed to accelerate. it's odd not hearing your car start up when you push the button because it's in all electric mode:confused:. not to many people know this but there's no AM radio in electric cars because of the eletromagnetic interfearence. as cars become more fuel efficient then gas prices will go up:stare1:

Oil company profits & tax revenue will remain static (or increase) regardless of what happens with consumption. When fuel efficient vehicles are common enough the national consumption goes down, the prices & taxes will go up to compensate.

YUP!!!

Hybrid cons
higher curb weight
lower average power and performance because total system power is only available when it's batteries are charged
more technology build in more complex systems more parts can fail reliability comes down

The only thing that will hurt the electric cars if gas prices go up is the majority of people still need the gas engine for traveling distances.

I think where the article went wrong was blaming the change on the arrival of all the new electric vehicles. That isn't what did it. What happened is the cheaper gas prices. People who would typically buy a hybrid for fuel economy are back to buying vehicles that consume more gas because it is cheap. When the gas prices increase, people will once again go in the hole and trade in for more economical vehicles.

Full electric wouldn't work for us, or many people.

Its a reflection of the cost of fuel vs the percentage of household budget that fuel consumes. As fuel cost eats discretionary spending and puts the squeeze on necessities, people start buying fuel efficient vehicles. It used to be SUVs vs Econoboxes; its SUVs vs Econoboxes, Hybrids and Electrics now. Car manufacturers push this too, because there's more profit margin in SUVs and pickups.

Nothing new here...

Exactly. When we got the Prius, we got it discounted and with zero percent financing because they were having trouble moving them due to the low fuel prices. People were buying the larger cars and SUV's.

As soon as the prices go back up, people will be trading in the SUV's and looking for better gas mileage. Dealers love this because people stick themselves with car payments for eternity, LOL.
