self driving trucks

Their end goal is to get out of paying drivers.

If they tried to transition to driverless trucks right now, there would be too much resistance.

The plan is to bite the bullet now, continue to pay drivers to babysit trucks while adding a hundred grand or so to the cost of the trucks, then wait til the general public gets used to the idea of having robot trucks behind them.

Then eventually they'll start phasing out the humans altogether, successfully destroying an entire industry in the name of greed.

Yep, but its going quite some time before the general public accepts the idea of a robotic truck on public highways. They're scared turdless of big trucks as it is without having a mindless iBot behind the wheel.

I don't expect to see driverless trucks, at least not in my lifetime. Google just released a report on their driverless vehicles, and it tells me all I really need to know. Google realizes that a world full of driverless cars is not going to be a good idea, just imagine turning 80,000 pound trucks loose.

There have been multiple accidents in these driverless cars, though none have been the fault of the car itself, always somebody else, which is where the problem lies.

When it comes to accidents, it really doesn't matter who is at fault. People are going to make mistakes and potentially cause accidents. a car, or truck, that is being handled by a competent driver, almost always sees the mistakes made by others and has the time to perform whatever evasive action is necessary to avoid a collision.

The driverless truck, as perfect as that computer may be, can't look into an intersection and anticipate that a person is not paying attention and is about to turn right in front of them. They don't see the car flying up the sidestreet paying no attention to a red light. They don't see that some idiot left a sprinkler running while the outside temperature dropped to 26 Degrees and froze all the water that sprayed onto the road, so right through that red light they will slide.

When you take the human ability to anticipate the actions of others, you are going to have massive, deadly accidents. Just a couple of these accidents will put a trucking company out of business once a lawyer gets done with that minor little fact that nobody was controlling the truck.

Lots of big ideas sound good on paper, only to be squashed at some point once a little bit of common sense comes into play.

I think well see applications for off road use, mining for instance, and truck platooning with a driver staring at the truck ahead of him first.

though I think that once this tech becomes commercially available I think that the truck manufactures should pony up and accept autonomous truck liability and not sticking it to the driver:stare1:. google and Volvo and Mercedes is ponying up to accept liability why don't the truck manufactures

So, on the topic of robotics in general, social consequences which do relate to the topic of the post and truck driving'...

“Our device isn’t meant to make employees more efficient. It’s meant to completely obviate them.”

Grrrreat! Just effin' great.

computers or the medical field is where the moneys at. but i'm sure those postions will be taken over by robots to!!

I've never seen one of those kiosks but I'll turn & walk out as soon as I do.

I know they're the 2nd most appropriate response to idiot burger flippers thinking they're worth $15/hr, but it's still not something I'll support.

(the most appropriate response for striking workers demanding far more than they're worth is illegal, so I won't mention it. ;) )
and if those idiot burger flippers think there worth 15 an hr. they need to check themselves you don't need a degree to flip a freaking burger or special training. :stare1:. but it's funny that they never think that minimum wage jobs weren't ment to live on and raise a family:stare1:. it's called get off your ass and goto school and get a degree in something. just like commieforina want's to raise minimum wage to 15.00 by 2020. like raising minimum wage is gonna help. by that time things will have increased rent utilites food and so on. but I see a lot of small business since commieforina is not small business friendly!! rates will go up all over across the board. so what good will it do to raise minimum wage:confused-96:. why not encourage people to goto school and get a degree so they can support themselves:confused-96: but then again theres been people that have gotten degrees and no job

Exactly what I have been saying up here. Those jobs are not meant to be careers. We are importing workers that are filling those fast food jobs as a career. We have students with massive amounts of student loans because they can't find those short term flexible hour jobs in fast food, To work and go to school.

I am not anti immigrant, I am pro look after your own backyard first.

Yes indeed if there is a shortage in some field that we need to import labour to stay competitive, Then by all means import.

Agree (somewhat) on the futility of raising minimum wage.
There are CL ads here around KC seeking drivers for $10 - $12 per hour.
WTH would anyone jump through the gov't B/S hoops to maintain a CDL for $12 per hour hour when they could get a 25% raise by working fast food.

So, if minimum wage rises to $15 per hour then crap wages for crap driving gigs will rise to $20....
and a $15 wage will earn you the same as your previous $8 wage.

As far as a degree goes, what good is it if the gov't allows H-1B workers to replace you at fast food or crap driving gig wages and you end up in fast food or a crap driving gig to put food on the table?

Save yourself the 10's if not 100's of thousands of dollars in student loan debt.

And since we've already detoured the thread from autonomous trucks through free trade v fair trade and fair wage drivel, I may as well point out that student loan debt in this country is around a TRILLION dollars...
AND...
HALF A TRILLION dollars of that debt is in default.

Student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt in this country and it NEVER goes away. You can't even file bankruptcy against student loan debt.
Death is the only way out.
Yet we allow people with vested interests to 'advise' 18 and 19 year-old's that they ought to indenture themselves for life to get a degree that they may never be able to break even on.

That's what you get when you do the "Everybody should be able to attend college" BS. To do that they lower entrance standards drastically (hence the "can barely read" problems) and give "degree" courses in fields where there are little to no chances of employment after graduation.

They're taking the university education into the same "feel good about yourself'" garbage dump that they've turned "public schools" into.

Classic "dumb the peasants down" , "put them in debt and keep them depending on you for everything" attitude that has been the mantra of the "Ruling Class" since forever.

Not all colleges are equal. Generally state colleges and universities still provide a good product. It's when you get into the junior colleges and especially the for profit outfits that you start getting into dumbed down, worthless paper.

except then you also have the exceptions to the dumb private colleges... the expensive exclusive colleges which can justify their fees based on their quality and depth of education.

But only the Haves can afford them, and they don't do scholarships, and so the Haves become Have-Mores while the peasants stay have-nothings.

hell yea we can ride aroud the country with our faces buried on facebook in our phones :biglaugh::yahoo:
Nope!

You will still be considered as a driver, and you will get busted by the inward facing camera!

Can you imagine how hard it will be to stay awake in the driver seat of one of these things?
