self driving trucks

Computers are very cheap. In cases like this and the space shuttle there are anywhere from 3 to 5 computers all doing the same thing. At least 2 must agree or they fall back into fail safe mode.

Also, these systems do not have a hard drive. They are all run out of very fast Flash memory like the memory stick that's in a professional camera that can take and store 10 high def pictures a second forever. VERY FAST

And, all CPU's have what is called a dead man timer. This is a separate chip connected to the CPU. The CPU must talk to the dead man timer chip every millisecond (1,000 of a second). If the dead man chip doesn't hear from the CPU for just one click it bangs the reset bit on the main CPU and in less then a few milliseconds it rests itself and continues on. This is a standard hard fast proven concept that has been used forever. After a mission or whatever is complete they look at the log and someone tells Fred to replace CPU #2 before next run.

The last government project I did had 6 CPU's where at least 2 had to agree. Depending on how many resets where done on up to 2 CPU's they weren't even replace. In other words. 1,000 resets on 500,000,000,000 cycles was NOTHING! They were brushed off as anomalies. Depending on the application we had mathematicians that came up with the figures I would program in for the parameters.

Computers are so small now. You look at your laptop and would be surprised what's inside. We have what is call an SOC. System on a Chip. It's about the size of a half dollar and requires just a 9 volt battery with 2 wires to make it run. It has on the average 144 pins to connect up to your USB port, video and other stuff. The program is burned into the chip and the memory is internal also.

DON'T GET ME GOING!!!
I think that computers have to capabilities to out wit us in the future for IRL situations and it would be much safer and faster for traffic, but for now we have to deal with the bugs. I like the idea of self driven vehicles. Yes I know, I'll be out of a job and blah blah blah. But there's wayyy too many idiots out there that shouldn't be driving and for that, I'll go do something else.

And I love driving a truck, my 350z or my R1 as much as the next guy or gal.

But we have to keep going forward and not be left behind with the good ol' days

We have adaptive cruise control now, which is full of problems. It works OK when the sky is clear and the sun is out. Dawn or Dusk and the sensor has issues. A little rain or fog, and the sensor has issues. Exit ramps, the sensor has major issues. Stationary object warnings all the time when nobody is around you.

Can't wait to see these trucks in action during a dust storm in New Mexico, or dealing with ice and snow down a mountain grade.

I love technology, but I can't help but see a disaster coming with this, if it ever becomes a reality.

One more thing, why is all this money being spent on driverless trucks, when it should be spent on addressing the emissions problems on these trucks? They can't get those sensors right, and we are going to depend on sensors that affect public safety?

True I think it's not the time to be doing such thing when there's more eminent problems.... But then again iRobot is like 17 years away and I still have hope for a ceiling lamp with ONE WING ON IT DAMMIT!!:mad:image.webp i just want this bad boy in my room, with a robot cleaning the rest of the room, I mean gods knows I need it...image.webpI mean we have the fans, but would you look at those prices

those one bladers were complete crap they had a balancing problem until fanimation redid em

Rapidly spreading cancers are described as "progressive".

Sometimes "progress" is realizing you've made a wrong turn & going back to correct it.

Businesses will stop at nothing until there is no such thing as a job for humans.

Science and technology is great, but so is nuclear energy, which is extremely dangerous if not kept under control.

I can just see to many situations with this self driving crap!!!

I read up on these trucks. Doesn't seem like the plans include removing the driver from the truck. They are looking to get these trucks running efficiently by running in a draft. A driver will still have to take the controls when not cruising on the interstate.

Still, I don't have a good feeling about these things.

I picture so many scenarios that I just can't see thesecond trucks being able to handle.
I can just see it the truck signals for the driver to take over the wheel and there face is buried in facebook:eek: a hacker hacks into the system and takes control of the truck and how well does the technology work in rain snow ice ect ect theres just so many scenarios

Exactly what I said in my first post or second, I think I would be nice to help the driver do stuff like direction and scratching that itch that have been bothering you

Well eventually they'll get it figured out.

And we'll be without jobs.
look @ mcdonalds they want to put in kiosks. I remember watching old movies like terminator robo cop and I told myself that that's what the world will be like some day and it's comming
