Personally, I’d choose to fully restore an older truck rather than purchase a new one.
- Here in Canada for a new Paccar product you’re looking at $250-300K.

Except carriers & brokers are conspiring to force older trucks off the road, forcing small operations and O/O's to be priced out of the industry.

That post sort of follows the classic car mentality. Do I buy a project and restore it? Or do I buy the best car the money I have will buy?
To restore a car today is cost prohibitive. It takes years or work, searching for parts and most of the time, the project is sold as is and you just lost all of that money. Buy the nicest one you can find, drive it, enjoy it and fix things as you go along.
I'm sure the same applies to an older truck except as noted, the lessor will just see the year of it and decline it, even though it's in showroom condition.

When I first signed on with STG (XPO at the time) they were willing to let me sign in the '88 Ford because I sent them a photo of it pulling one of their cans as a third party.
They thought it looked good. Fast forward a few months maybe a year and I ask again about doing it and selling the Mack and they said nope everything has to be new enough for an ELD.
Today, they're saying everything has to be 2007 or newer if it's not grandfathered in.
I wouldn't want a truck that's hard/impossible to get parts for on today's congested roads anyway. IOW a lot of the reason my truck has sat for so long is the Ford specific parts are difficult to find, or extremely expensive if you do locate them.
So even a minor fender bender would be tough to recuperate from.
A Peterbilt or KW won't be nearly as bad but there is still stuff that has you scouring the junk yards because no one makes it anymore.
Hard to run a business that way.
I prefer to have a currently supported truck that I can buy parts for by walking into any dealership for the brand, even if it's expensive, to get a new OEM part.
Let the old stuff be a hobby.
