Evaluated the cost of running your trucking business lately? It's not pretty

That's another problem I'm having because they're clearly not considering dock time, then they're getting pissed when they have to wait at the shipper. It shows in the negative reviews on JB Hunt.

This is an area that large OTR based carriers simply don't get, or don't care about in regards to their brokerage division.

I am not interested in your $35-$50/hour detention rates after two hours on a local/short haul. Because of that, I am quoting you a full day rate on a 100 mile run because that 100 mile run could easily kill my entire day.

With these loads, the per mile mentality is a bad mentality. And since the brokers don't want to pay you hourly for a load, it's going to be a full day rate, or a half day rate if I am picking it up later in the day and delivering same day or early the next morning.

Nothing is set in stone in regards to running a small trucking business, that is the important thing to be learned here.

That's my issue with the JB board. To be fair though, I'm not really supposed to be running a day cab with them. I received an "invite" email from a head hunter after I had already signed up and right before I was approved that said in big bold letters NO DAY CABS.

Lol.

Nothing actually stopped me from signing up and I didn't lie about my truck. It didn't ask what kind of truck, only how many.

I look at how much time it will be on my truck.

Deliver in the morning, half a day.

Pickup in the afternoon, half a day.

If that means I am dispatched (booked) yesterday morning, that’s one full day.

Today is day two.

Deliver by noon Friday, 1/2 day.

That includes all deadhead time, load time, unload time etc.

If I get say 200 miles further down the road like I did today, so much the better.

But I still budgeted my time to unload Friday late in the day.

So I’m 3 days into this load. Call it $2000 plus pilot, plus permits, plus fuel/maint. Get the amount the motor carrier gets for their cut.

Once those expenses are paid, the leftover is all mine.

I’m tired and rambling…

Time for some cream soda.
