Detroit DD13 vs DD15 for 80,000 lbs: Fuel Economy, Power, and Maintenance Costs

That’s wierd as Hell, I just dont think your sales person knew how to do a build sheet. Or maybe they didn’t understand that On Guard which is made to interface with the automated transmission, is an adaptive cruise.
Ok. I can’t resist

WTF is Onguard and adaptive cruise?

Goddamn new trucks. Goddamn new “truckers”.

Goddamn technology

Learn to use your right foot on the go fast pedal

FFS.

Hahaha right! I have no problem with that, but too many places want warm bodies in seats and with distracted driving increases they made systems that will slow you down (adaptive cruise) or completely stop you(on guard) if your not paying attention.

It wasn't just the salesmen ( I dealt with one in Grand Island, and one more local to me), but also looking at my lease purchase options with Schneider at the time. They would only buy the trucks with the adaptive cruise, and it was preventing them from buying trucks with autoshifts.

This was back in 2013 I believe, I was looking at 2014 builds. It was aggravating.

Haha that means you would of bought an Eaton 10 speed at the time. They were trying to get production started with the DT12 on a fuller scale but Germany could not ship enough units to meet demands and the us assmebly plant in Detroit wasn’t full up and running until mid/late 2015. DT12 was back ordered. Big time. Everyone loved them. Hell I wish I had one cuz this Eaton auto sucks!!!

By the time I finished spec'ing the truck, it was with a 13 speed. It was really aggravating to try to get the things I wanted, and in the end, it just didn't happen.

I'm sure adaptive cruise and OnGuard work with the DT12 drive train... the megas are buying them like the proverbial hotcakes.

Its not so much that the unskilled are hired to drive those trucks, but systems like OnGuard react faster than a human does, even with an experienced driver in the seat, in many situations where someone - especially 4-wheelers - do something incredibly stupid. Those extra fractions of a second in reaction time do lower crash rates enough to be very noticeable to the safety guys. Its cheaper to buy trucks with those systems than to pay liability claims.

Reviving this thread as I am getting a bit more serious into the process. Current truck is running well, but thinking seriously about adding a new truck for me and putting a driver into my current truck.

Sales is pushing the DD13, though the power and torque is a bit better throughout the curve with the DE15.

Probably because they can't get rid of them. The only guys running a DD13 that pass me on a hard pull are running empty when I'm loaded.

IMO, they're gutless, and I wouldn't have one.

I have a DD13 manual and would rather have a DD15, but all our DD15s are automatic. The DD15s out pull me but I can increase my productivity by not screwing around with and waiting on the transmission. Plus it's less irritating.

So basically give me a DD15 and a manual transmission and I'm spoiled.

Although if the price difference is huge I'd go for the cheaper, better condition one.

JMHO.

You just need a 13 speed manual and you will blow right past them.

I've talked to a number of folks running a DD15/DT12 auto drive train. I haven't run across anyone that regrets the choice.

:dunno:

I'd probably choose a 13 OD manual geared to run direct at 65.

It's not really a bad choice. You can still make $ with it but with us doing a ton of drop & hook, being able to finesse the trailer into the hole with the clutch saves time.

At least for me when I compared my productivity to when I had the automatic.

Plus the stupid things always wanna start in 1st when you're bobtail. Runs through gears and over revs unless you creep or override it. Manual you chuck it in 5th and take off.

But anyway that's transmission related not the power plant itself so it's kinda off topic.

Basically just saying if my choice is a DD13 paired with a manual or a DD15 paired with an auto, I'd rather have the DD13 because the auto has too many annoyances.

Not THAT bad really. Then again I'm in PA and not Colorado. OTR might make me care more.
If I was doing what you are, a DD13 daycab would probably be fine. Pulling freight OTR, I'd rather have a 15L motor. My choice of transmission would be a 13 speed, single overdrive geared for 65 in 12th (direct.) That's probably 264s - IIRC.

Of course I would also be more irritated at the 60 mph governor if I was OTR. I literally wouldn't even do it.
