We've exhausted the ELD subject...right?

Getfit Tommy

Highway Hero
I've mentioned the "facial recognition" device to be stuck in your mug to tell you if you are too tired to drive, which I thought the ELD was already taking care of.... maybe I am misunderstanding... and the ELD does NOT tell you when to shut down...

Now, Michigan gets a whole year to start roadside drug-testing without reasonable-suspicion....and it's a saliva test, not a piss test. There is a difference, and if you don't know what it is, look it up.

So, my question is this: "What's next?"

A government agent climbing in the truck with you to hold a gun on you and record every time you fart... and if it stinks enough.. maybe create a filter... Fart Particulate Filter... government mandated.... WTF?

We are not going to be able to drive down the roads hauling people's shit and enjoy any part of our lives.

I don't have anything to hide as far as drug-testiing, but that's just one more thing, one more stop, one more annoying issue... that will in turn feed itself into another annoying issue.

Total control, except that they haven't found a way to hold the wheel yet.

If I had a government agent riding with me, (surely he would not hold a Class A and even if he did, he would be "that guy" who didnt have to have any experience) ... I would just jump in the sleeper and say "you drive, bitch"

and get it there on time, and be nice to the receivers, because they aren't going to act like your best friend.... (like you have any)

While it would be mind numbingly tedious to explain why elogs are not a new law, nor a new regulation, or the simple fact you have no right to operate your business ( or be paid to operate someone elses) again. I am beginning to suspect such discussions are beyond your grasp.

No harm, plenty of folks live full and interesting lives at that level. Goodwill seems fond of employing them.

Well, as long as there is a commerce clause in the U.S. Constitution (and has been since it was signed in 1787), there is going to be regulation on interstate commerce, including stuff like ELD's. They are not required, even by heavy trucks, when used locally or intra-state, unless the state itself has mandated them also. The FMCSA only has jurisdiction on what travels between states. A state may opt to adopt this ELD thing within their border for local and intrastate truck movement, but they are not under any mandate to do so. And come on guys and gals, it is just a HOS recording device. Not like some dweeb is sitting at a computer terminal and watching your every move.

And when we really get down to it, trucking is not as regulated as many other business' are. The food industry comes to mind right off the top. We just think are being singled out and picked on.

Our trucks only ping every 15 minutes at the most, and a trucking company isn't going to spend money on spies to watch every driver's every move. A dispatcher can manually ping our truck to find it, but they have enough on their plate to do that just for kicks.

It's just a way to record HOS more easily and stay compliant.

I don't see where I've defended them being used by force. If a company chooses to put them in their trucks, well, the trucks belong to them and that's their prerogative. They have the right to do it as long as the recording device is acceptable to the people who make the rules. If I had my 'druthers, they wouldn't exist outside of personal laptop computers. But, that's not my call.

I can either use the equipment required to do my job or find a different job. I love what I do enough to learn how best to utilize my time within the constraints of HoS and elogs.

I have pointed out some benefits to their use, such as a sharper focus on detention times and customer demands of trucks moving off site in violation of HoS. But I have never advocated forced use.

What makes me laugh a little is the claim by independents that it's not fair for them to be under the same rules as the large carriers, that following identical requirements will put them out of business. They claim they can't make it if they can't cheat. All they're doing when they say this is proving the point for the "safety" groups pushing the mandate.

Good for them BUT it still VIOLATES the CONSTITUTION...
Bullshit. This tired nonsense again..

You have a choice. If you don't want to be regulated by FMCSA, either run intrastate or find a different industry.

Ever read 1984 by George Orwell..
Yep. Read Animal Farm, too. Great entertainment from a talented yarn spinner. What's your point?

Well this is not just a STEP in the Door...

Nope this is the SURVEILLANCE State kicking the DOOR off the Hinges and holding you a GUNPOINT

People don't like how the industry is controlled simple, find another line of work.Thought Birtch was going to retire, haven't seen it yet have you?

Have to admit to that one also. I have gotten regular detention pay since e-log got put in 4.5 yrs ago in my truck. Made $1500 in detention just in November alone from 3 occurrences involving two customers. Over $1000 just from one customer. Kinda nice to spend about 12-13 hrs at a quiet customer location, do a full 10 hr break, get rested, and make over $500 at the same time. And what was wrong with e-logs again?

I'm a day cabbie so I don't get the long ones, but $92 for sipping coffee and getting some walking exercise with my headphones in ain't bad either.

Other drivers think I'm crazy for volunteering for Wakefern. I'm like...I'll take free money. That's a paid break.
