The "Safe Haven" Rule - What it is and what it isn't...

are you kidding me?.....must be a may-september solar powered driver....no way in the world that any driver can know about every weather situation while driving 500 plus miles a day.....now maybe a local driver running from daytona to miami everyday knows he is gonna hit rain once a day in florida is one thing.......but any driver that has put miles in running places north of fl/ga line will never know of every single weather related situation before he/she gets to it.....anyone who says they do is full of it......plain and simple........
No I have been doing this for 20 years now. I live in Canada. I know how to read weather patterns. This is also the information age. But nice try there sunshine!:)

well if your cellphone never goes without a signal and no weather system forms as your driving down the road then i should ride with you....i have been driving down the road before in total sunshine and had a snow squall form and ended up in a total whiteout and then 5 minutes later been back in the sunshine...
Oh WOW A snow squall, 5 Minutes of whiteout then back into the sunshine OMG, OMG, OMG did you use your safe haven rule? Because that is the topic.

Weather forecasts are never very accurate and they're hard to follow sometimes.

Like if it's an audio report you're listening to I stead of a weather map (whole driving, ya know) they always issue alerts for counties.

When you're at mile marker 158 in some state, how are you to know the name of the county you're in?

Then there's the fact weather apps don't give you much info about even your current conditions. Just temp & percent chance of rain/snow unless you start digging around the app (while driving) and manually type in the names of cities along your route and looking at their hourly forecast.

I only do that crap when I'm sitting still & already in a mess, just to see if I should shut 'er down or push through it because I'm almost past it.

And sometimes those weather radar things are inaccurate. I've seen the weatherbug app's radar show me in the clear when in fact, it's snowing on me & due to traffic throwing crap in the air, I'm going through more washer fluid than fuel.

So yeah, I can see getting caught in unexpectedly bad conditions even with all this technology we have today.

How do you find yourself in adverse conditions without prior knowledge? Ignorance?, Just holding the wheel with headphones on listening to Itunes? No understanding of weather patterns? Truck driving takes every aspect of education. Science and geography is a big part of it.
i know what the topic is......but when people ay

so you can tell me and the world what your 500 plus mile run will be like weather wise before you even start?.....i think your full of it.....claiming that people who get caught off guard due to weather are ignorant......kills me...so have a nice christmas and a safe new year.....me and millions of others will strive to gain the knowledge you have........

He's Canadian.
Keep that in mind. He lives & usually drives in areas where the people in the cars and other trucks know how to drive in it. So when icy roads cause big pile-ups in the USA, in Canada or the northern states it just makes everyone slow down.

I get that.....I also have driven many years running Albany to Montreal to Huntsville Ontario down thru Toronto back into New York.....and could not tell you how many times I have run that 401 with trucks littering the ditch during and after snow......the part that annoys me is how some people talk as tho they are perfect......not a driver I know is and I would like to think that after all the years I have been doing it I learn a little something new every day.......be safe and have a great Xmas and new years......

It seems everyone on this thread knows how to avoid being caught off guard except for you. Not sure why you struggle with knowing before you start going. The areas that have sudden bad weather are well known they have been like that for thousands of years. So if you are going into an area like that you should be prepared.

Oh I know the areas I travel very well and am well prepared for my daily travels......my issue is with your statements about how you claim drivers are ignorant cause they don't know what every inch of their route will be like before they start their day......perhaps an experiment is in order......I'm leaving Binghamton new York headed to Syracuse new York......then to deer park long island......then to Flanders new Jersey.......then back to Binghamton new York........since your good at knowing all situations before you start your day so well I would be honored to have you tell me what issues I will run into and the affect on time they will have......will be running 81 and 690 in upstate ny....81, 84, 380 and 80 in pa....80 and 206 in Jersey and 95, 295 and 495 from the Jersey line out to the island.......show this less experienced driver what your thousands of years of knowledge can do.......

You will be fine. Good luck. I am not not where you are nor do I have any interest in doing your due Diligence for you. But I am guessing temps are above freezing. Unless you run into a bit of lake effect snow that sets you into a panic, Snow squalls as you call them. If I am wrong and you need to use the safe haven rule let me know.
Here is one part of reading weather. Ever hear of the saying red sky at night sailors delight. Red sky in the morn sailors be warned? That has been a rule for hundreds of years.

Looks I stumbled into another wrong thread.......I drive a truck......not float on a boat......anyway more than snow causes issues during ones your of duty and since your unwilling to share your knowledge with another driver that obviously could use it I guess I will do what I always do.......get it done.....

Sorry The same rules of geography and weather apply it is universal around the globe.I am sharing with you. You are just to hell bent on trying to make me look like a liar ( full of it I believe your words where) And like I am a know it all to receive.
Are the temps not above freezing like I said? Are the skys not clear? The Temps have been above average so if you run into any lake effect and I doubt you will. The lake effect will only be a flurry and melt on contact with the road.

If I need to drop some science on you the weather pattern generally move from the west to the east. Looking at weather further west than where you are traveling will help you get an idea of what is in store for you. If the the weather is coming in from the east then there is going to be big problems.

Take a look at the jet stream Oh wait but your not a pilot. Take a look at the jet stream, The further south that drops the colder it is going to get.

Never accuse me of not being willing to share knowledge. But you came out swinging telling me I was full of it. How about now do I look like I am full of it? Do you have internet? Do you have the weather band on your radio or C.B.? Do you ever tune in to the weather band before going to bed to know what is in store for the morning?

So you don't drive a boat or a float, This may pre date you but pre-GPS do you know how truckers found their heading in the dark in the middle of nowhere. They looked at the sky and found the North star. But you are too much of a trucker to transfer skills.

The bottom line is the only way that one would need to use the safe haven rule is one of two. One they where held at the shippers when all hell broke loose or two they where too stupid to know when to throw the towel in and find a safe place before they all got full or where out of range.

Just annoys the hell out of me that someone says it's ignorance to run into bad weather without already knowing about it.......weather can change minute by minute and mile to mile......and anyone who' says they can accurately predict 14 hours of weather over a 500 plus mile range is indeed full of it......also no stars out so far.....nothing but clouds.......and since I don't use GPS and I can't navigate using the north star I guess I will break out my trusty map......if I remember correctly even number interstates go east and west and odd go north and south........time to get rolling.......and since I hate being a buzzkill I will comment no further on this........

I can't make you happy. I tried to help you. Nobody said you can predict weather minute to minute. What i said was, You would have to be ignorant to need to run over your hours to find a safe haven.:whoosh:
