The Island of Misfit Toys

@Snowblind I believe you'd like it here if for no other reason than the office. There about 20 or so women there, and one guy. Those are pretty favorable odds lol. Finally got my first load. Jesus, freight in Georgia sucks. Unless of course you want to pull out of Atlanta. Even then, still kinda sucks. Heading north on this one. Pennsylvania isn't my favorite place, especially this time of year. North is north though. Said goodbye to Georgia for good, praise Odin. You'd have to knock me out, duct tape my hands and feet together and drag my bleeding corpse across the border to get me there again. Here's to you, home of cheap freight 🖕

Yes, those are definitely odds even I might be able to score in, but you need to get away from god first, I don't do well in those environments.

Talked to Ben this morning. He passed his DOT physical down where he was rehabbing and was on his way up to Cartersville to take another for the company.

If everything went well he was going to be back out on the road for a Monday delivery in St. Paul. All that's left now is to find his truck, apparantly nobody is for sure on where the hell it is. Possibly Black River, or maybe Richfield or Trenton.

@Snowblind I forgot to tell you something about this place. I have a fun new toy called "yard moves". Well, as long as I continue to behave myself lol. If I'm at a shipper or receiver I have an option for the on duty status that allows me to move freely on their property without burning drive time. How sweet is that?!? And as of tonight I'll be on home turf. Deadheading home from this delivery. Holy crap the rate difference between home and where I was is staggering. And, even better yet, I may have found a local dedicated round trip run that pays extremely well.

We have that too, one of the changes that came when they switched from Qualcomm to Samsara. I do use it when I'm pulling my loads out to save some drive time, which has come in handy a couple times.

Just remember to change it back, I forgot once in the beginning and ended up staying in yard move most of the way up to Green Bay.

Get an unexpected day off tomorrow :-(

When I called dispatch after we got off the phone turned out the load I had for Monday delivery got cancelled so the Iowa City load that I mentioned to you when we were on the phone actually was my replacement load for that, nothing else was available.

Sadly, Kentucky was a 2 day run, Iowa City I can do in 1, so no work tomorrow....

Apparently yard moves have been a thing for a while now. DOT let's us have it but it's up to our companies to decide whether or not to let us have it. Kinda makes me hate Landstar a little more. I'm gonna miss them like an intestinal flu. Won't miss the paychecks either. The load I delivered today was a one day run. Doing the math on the same line haul pay and mileage, I made $200 more here than over there. Christ I should have done this a long time ago. Four or five loads a week with that kind of disparity is just goddam depressing.

That sucks, I'm sorry :( Hey by the way, I talked to the old buzzard today. Seems like he's in great spirits and back to himself. I haven't been bugging him because I wasn't sure where his head was at. Looks like he's gonna make a change relatively soon, proud of him for that. He's too feisty to stay at that place long term anyhow. Good for him.

Boy, lose a guy's truck just once and everything changes.... :gun3:

I think the move was gonna happen no matter what. He's got itchy feet. And frankly, why not. Might as well kick around and see what's out there. If I was single with no kids, I'd explore my options too. Hell I just started with my third company in 3.5 years and it took that to find out where I'm comfortable. Nobody marries the girl they took to prom. At least not these days anyway.

Last week we got an email telling us that landstar would no longer be paying loads if the addresses for the shipper/consignee on the rate cans didn't match the freight bills. And if the didn't, we were to make a set of blind bills to submit for invoicing.

Is it that way for leased trucks too?

That's not anything I heard while I was there. But I'm betting that things were different for us vs outside carriers. Probably also depended on the broker they were leaching from. Some brokers have some very squirrely demands that I'll never understand. Every load had a different set of rules, like specific tracking software, certain procedures for check calls, etc. I ignored all that garbage. Here's my truck, put your crap in it. I'm going to go to your customer, and they're going to take your crap out of it. Then I'm going to go get a beer. If you want to track me, call my company. They have my truck on gps.

Actual email I got....

.
This is just an FYI on Landstar. ALL Landstar companies are requiring the bol’s to have the shipper and receiver address on a BOL that matches the rate confirmation.

If the bol/ pod you are given from Landstar does not have both addresses or does not match the rate confirmation you must create a short form bol.

If you create a short form, it does not have to be signed, just has to have shipper & receiver address filled out and submit it with paper work.

We will not fund any loads that don’t have the required information. This is crazy but it’s the only way to get paid.

WTAF?!? So Landstar is giving you both the rate con and the BOL, and sometimes they don't match? And what good is a short form that's not signed? Sounds like blind shipments are getting out of hand.

Don't miss freight, not even a little...
Landstar is a broker, and a crappy one. That said, there's no such thing as a broker who is giving you both a rate con and a BOL. Rate cons come from brokers. BOLs come from shippers. Nary the tween shall meet. Unless of course you're hauling for an actual freight company. Fed Ex for example. If I haul a load for them, the rate con will be coming from them. Because I'll be picking up at their facility, they will also be giving me a BOL once I'm loaded. Landstar has zero shipping facilities. They just broker freight. And in the event where I'd be hauling for a company like Fed Ex, Landstar only serves to get in the way quite honestly. Would have been easier to deal with Fed Ex directly. More profitable as well.

I've been at this a year or two, I know how it works. But you've never got a blind BOL from a broker? Used to be pretty common to get one via email. "use this BOL for delivery."

The email @mndriver shared specifically mentioned BOLs recieved from Landstar that didn't match the rate cons. Hence my WTF. There's some fuckery going on here!

I’ve had that happen before, one BOL to get me across the border, another BOL for delivery
Never thought that much about it
