Ebay and Craigs List is also an awesome place to get great deals on used APU's. Many come from crashed trucks and are insurance salvage sales. Even getting an APU that's missing parts like generator head or AC compressor is a good way to start. Put the money in and fix it up. You can walk away with an APU for about $3,000. I see them all the time. I just sent DubbleD a pic of an APU for $3,280 installed. It was a Rigmaster with no heat and no AC. Can be added but for his purpose it would be perfect. It has a 6,000 watt generator to run a house AC but THE MOST IMPORTANT thing is the automatic startup when batteries need to be charged. I can't stress this feature enough. Along with an Espar heater you can sit back for the weekend in the winter in a 72 degree cab and never ever worry about your batteries being in top notch charged condition.

What sucks about this particular truck is its set up so when you turn the key to the run position it shuts down both the APU & the espar heater.
So when it's 10 degrees and you go to warm up that massive block of iron, the heater shuts off & the cab freezes. Or if you just need to move the truck a few feet, it kills the espar heater and then it has to go through its ridiculously long startup procedure again.

And I would want to be able to turn it off from the driver's seat cuz I'd take off in the morning and forget to turn it off til I'm 10 miles down the road and then I'd be too lazy to stop and turn it off.

All our trucks have the arctic pack and the APU will keep the "big block of iron" above freezing temps along with warming the fuel to some degree.
Idling when outside temps go below 10 to 15 degrees is for your personal comfort and at your discretion.
Planning ahead for extreme temps really helps.

He does raise a legitimate point though.
And there is a "factory option" to it also. Tripak has their " stand by mode" as well as having a toggle switch to control standby
I have considered installing it for just the reason duck suggested. Which is harmful to the espar heater allowing the burn chamber to foul.
