Agree! The white sheet law never existed. Why would anyone buy into a trucker being forced to use their bedding as bandages and from some of the drivers I have seen I would not want their bed sheets anywhere near an open wound of mine.

No no, it's true. I read it on the internets and they can't post anything that's not true.

Measure the bunk? Now why would they need to measure the bunk?

Not the bunk, the bed. I was just reading that on another forum where they listed the DOT reg that allowed them to measure it. It's the one case they can come in but not search unless they see something out in the open. If your a team and both drivers are awake they can come in to verify a seat belt on the bed.

I'll see if I can find that reg about measuring the bunk again.

Sleeper berths. - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

I was just reading this a few weeks ago. The guy had drugs in the back. The lawyer tried to say it was illegal search but the cop said he was measuring the bed and the guy was convicted. I'm still looking for the definition.

As for the "need to" they dont but its a rule its gotta be a min size so they can.

But they manufacturer builds the sleeper, and wouldn't they be building them to meet the requirement?

And if so, then why would it even be something that needs to be "checked". And fool who makes his bed smaller shouldn't be sleeping in a truck anyway.

Why its to save them time and money. This way they dont have to travel to Mexico, Washington state, Texas, South Carolina to check trucks rolling out of the plants, they just wait for them to cross the scales.
But heres the stupid part........you can have a sleeper bunk with nothin in it and not be in trouble;

[h=2]Interpretation for 393.76:[/h] Question 1: If a compartment in a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) is no longer used as a sleeper berth, must it be maintained and equipped as a sleeper berth as required in §393.76?

Guidance: No

I'm guessing this is one of them rules that dont get check any at all, unless the driver is a total ass and the cop is just looking for something to wipe him with.

There's no clearance to measure in my bunk. I removed the top bed and if any officer can say he thought the clearance is too low above my bed, he'll need to get his eyes and head checked.

Now why would anyone carry contraband ? Don't we have enough to worry about?

Depends on what they consider "contraband". When they ban us from carrying hair brushes, I would publicly advise people to violate that law & carry hairbrushes anyway. Lately they've been banning stuff they have no constitutional right to ban, regardless of their bull**** interpretation of "interstate commerce". A Michigan DOT pig once told me that any knife with a blade 4" or longer is an illegal weapon. The knife that was clipped to the side of the ash tray in plain view from outside the cab had a 3" blade & I even tried to hand it to him with my log book ruler so he could measure it, but he didn't seem to be interested in the knife. I think he was just being an ass by implying that he'd enforce a bull**** law if he had the opportunity.

@blackw900, @Tim & @rigjockey, ... you were successfully trolled by that one.

It seems they would only use "measuring the bunk" as a legal loop-hole to get away with conducting an illegal search of the bunk. Unless there are hidden cameras inside the cab that show the pig illegally opening cabinets or something, it would be his word against the drivers.

And yes the camera would have to be hidden. Cops always respond with illegal confiscation of property and sometimes violence whenever they realize a civilian has their actions caught on video.

One time when I was a teenager, my friends & I were walking down the street pushing my oxygen & acetylene tanks to my friend's house because the communal go-kart had one of it's main frame rails broken & it was easier to bring the tanks to the go-kart than to bring the go-kart to my place for repairs.

We also had a video camera with us because we had been videotaping ourselves intentionally crashing the go-kart.

Cop rolls up. I think he was just passing by and wondered why a bunch of teenagers were pushing oxygen/acetylene tanks up the street. The first thing he did was tell me to turn off the video camera, ... and of course, .. I did not. I just acted like I did, but pointed the camera downwards and kept it rolling to capture the audio. I wasn't expecting to capture him doing anything illegal, ... and didn't, ... but I kept the tape rolling just so we could have something to laugh about later. And it actually was kind of funny getting his reaction when we told him that we were intentionally crashing a go-kart just for the hell of it and broke the frame in the process.

You have either just been lucky or you don't know when your being screwed.......
There is one thing I get tired of- people implying I am stupid just because I disagree with them.
It wasn't my experience either, until last year. You do that just once and tell me you'll trust every badge until it proves to be a jerk.
I can't say what my reaction would be since I've never been there. I won't insult you by trying. No one ever really knows what they would do in a certain situation unless they are actually in that situation.

I fully agree what happened to you in Cali should never have happened. That's why I say I do believe there are bad cops even though I've never met one.

If you notice over the years they have up the clearance from 18 inches to 24 inches, they had the foresight to see an onslaught of fat ass people becoming truck drivers.:)

@blackw900, @Tim & @rigjockey, ... you were successfully trolled by that one.

Maybe, maybe not. Even if he did post that as sarcasm if someone didnt shoot it down some noob newbie would have read that and might believed it to have been true and the cycle of stupidness would continued on.

The "white sheet law" never existed but, You're right....The idiots at the truck stop counter have been telling that lie for as many years as I can remeber.

I remember laughing at that story in the 70's!

I first heard about this law in truck driving school (indoctrination camp) 20 years. The way I heard it was that it was a law in one state in New England and it was simply to ensure truck drivers were given clean working conditions by the company. Sounds like a plausible blue law but i can't confirm it has any foundation.
