Southwest Border Violence

DESCRIPTION:
For over 40 years drug cartels have been involved in extensive drug trafficking operations across the US-Mexico border. Due to the efforts of President Calderon in Mexico and law enforcement officers in America, cross border smuggling of drugs has become much more difficult to these operations. With these difficulties, the cartels gangs have become more aggressive and dangerous with their tactics. Violent crimes have surged throughout border cities and the violence that primarily occurred on the Mexican side has begun to spill into the United States.

WHAT IS BEING DONE?
Rising violence in Mexico and abroad is forcing foreign companies to change their operating procedures and shipping routes, while also tightening security for their employees. Some companies are asking employees to only travel during daylight hours and if possible to travel in groups when in Mexico.

Mexico is also deploying more guards in order to protect commuter routes for Americans. The area of Ciudad Juarez, which is the main hotspot of violent activity, is home to nearly 400 factories and 230,000 employees that are mostly owned by the U.S. Officials have created special commuter routes leading to and from the industrial parks to protect the workers and managers. They’ve engaged 300 city, state, and federal police and over 5,000 soldiers to protect the corridors. These routes also lead to and from international bridges traveled daily by U.S. plant managers, engineers and suppliers.

The U.S. Department of State has issued a nationwide travel alert for U.S. citizens traveling to, working, or living in Mexico. It states:

  • It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of going to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations and who to contact if one becomes a victim of crime.
  • The greatest increase in violence has occurred near the U.S. border, however all areas of Mexico should be visited with caution.
SUMMARY:
Violence amongst Mexican drug cartels in the border states, on both sides of the US-Mexico border, has exponentially increased in the past years. More than 200 Americans have been killed in the area since 2004.1 Murders, drug smuggling, human smuggling, beatings, tortures, and most notably kidnappings, are all on the rise. The majority of these crimes are occurring within the borders of Mexico, but when the gangs and cartel members begin to relocate operations, the violence follows.

Why Should You Care??
Being a highway professional carries extra potential for involvement in these experiences. Truck drivers carry a risk as they are involved in operations that might interest these criminals. Law enforcement personnel also run an elevated risk of attack by Mexican gang members. Whether traveling to Mexico for personal reasons or simply making scheduled deliveries or pickups, you must maintain situational awareness at all times and be extremely conscious of your environment. Knowing the background of the route you will be taking, the types of neighborhoods encountered, and even the company history you are working with will prove beneficial in your safety. If ever approached by unknown individuals always maintain a sense of guard and assess the level of suspicion of their intentions. If a situation does not feel right to you, do not hesitate to avoid the circumstances at all costs.

Wanted to copy a big portion of it for those who cannot open PDF documents for whatever reason. This was passed on to me, and thousands of others by the OOIDA

I don't know if this fits with this thread if not I apologize. That fence that was built is very affective. They wanted to build all 2000 miles of that fence to keep illegals out but rumor has it Obama says no because he's affraid it'll actually work.I'm SO ANGRY at the way he is running our soon to be communist country I can't even reply to anything anybody says about him.

I'd say the border fence is relative to this topic. You're right it is effective. You might want to check into how much resistance there was to doing it for the last 8 years. It seems that only recently that the work picked up. The last president was letting EPA laws interfere with construction. Ironic, huh?

I guess I did'nt pay much attention with how bush was doing versus obama.Although now that you mention it,Bush does like mexicans because he brother Jeb,I think that's his bro is married to a mexican. Now no matter how good the idea is,if a rep comes up with it,he will deny their request for the simple fact Obama is getting rid OF ALL POLICIES that was made by the other presidents.GOD I HATE OBAMA.Ok now that I vented I won't mention him anymore unless it's the politics forum.

I understand.
I think Jeb's wife is Columbian, but I'm not certain. Growing up in Florida, I learned how important the distinction is. I really feel the Mexican policy is motivated more by corporate greed rather than family ties, though.
Some of the old policies needed changing, I mean how's it been going so far?
One of my earliest suggestions on this problem was to have the illegals in this country help build the border fence in exchange for earning their legal citizenship.
It sure would help in protecting us from a lot of problems coming from our south.
Drugs, illegal immigration, easier commerce regulation, etc.

Blaming Bush for the border problems won't fly. We have been having problems with that border for as many administrations as I can remember.

Screw a fence, you need to be able to turn the border patrol and the National Guard loose on these people who keep coming in. Put up a fence, they will cut through it, or tunnel under it. As soon as you start shooting at these people, we get activists in this country whining about their rights and the next thing you know all power is taken away from a border patrol agent.

I considered the Border Patrol a while after coming out of the Marine Corps, that was, until I learned just how bad their hands were tied behind their backs.

I do agree the problem has been there for years, got worse after NAFTA though. I don't see why we can't try a good fence. The Chinese seemed to like the idea. Many other ancient civilizations, come to think of it.

But, they could actually defend the fence. We, on the other hand, have too many rules and regulations in place that have to be followed before we can simply open fire.

Well the purpose would be to stop or slow down as many illegal crossings as possible. I really wasn't thinking about a way to shoot people. The majority are crossing desert to get work and if given a choice, they'll carry a gal. of water (7lbs.) vs. an AK-47.
Besides, the manpower required to keep a 2,000 mile border impenetrable makes it impractical. It's designed to stop a flood but there will always be a trickle. That's the best we can hope for - slow the flood to a trickle. There just isn't a 100% perfect solution. I'm just saying try and see how good we can make it.
In the event of an armed confrontation...this is a national border. We have men and women who take orders to defend it and a good Commander-in-chief can take care of them. That's where we have fallen short for a long time. Those border agents (Ramos(?) and Campeon) are a good example. Granted they were not members of the armed forces but since they were defending themselves and our country the POTUS had a legal and moral obligation to back them up. He could have and should have but didn't. No amount of law and regulation can thwart incompetence or moral bankruptcy.
I know, I know....no Bush bashing allowed. It was an unintended consequence of discussing the facts. NAFTA was whose brilliant idea? And yes Slick Willy was the one who signed it into law - another morally bankrupt POTUS. (Fair and balanced)
My point is, this is not a failure of ideas or law - but of people. I hear the same thing said about the justice system - we have to change the law, the system is wrong.
No it isn't. The system is fine. It's the people in charge of it who don't do their job that's wrong.
Are you voters listening?

Phooey.. 100 yard kill zone on either side of the fence, claymores AT the fence, and towers every 100 yards or so is all that's needed. Reduced manpower and one hell of a secure border. 'Nuff said.

One Shot One Kill. 1-2-3-4 I LOVE THE MARINE CORPS!

Oh yeah.
Somebody else had a fence like that. It was famous for shooting people in the kill zone.
Now let me think....hmmm.
I let y'all figure out that one.
hint: they were not considered heroes of the free world.

Huge difference between the two, and if you can't see that......

I can see just fine.
One was to keep people in, and this would be to keep people out.
I just don't find glee in killing unarmed people.
I know, I'm funny that way.

Again, you've missed the obvious. East Germany didn't have a formal immigration policy that allowed someone to leave East Germany. WE, on the other hand, DO have a formal immigration policy. Of course, there are those that feel that the state of illegal immigration isn't a threat to our national security and just turn the other way. In fact, they'd much rather throw more money at the already strained infrastructure to allow them to continue their free ride.

You don't have to harm them if they stay in their own Country, and quit coming here and screwing up this one.
