self driving trucks

I saw an announcement of Smart Trucks (along with automatic transmission), supposedly it's driven by EPA and fuel consumption requirements for 2018.

I'm not sure if all this has been posted, but the advertisement for using self driving trucks or smart trucks could be by EPA.

"The next big thing that is already starting to rollout to Drivers is our new Smart Trucks. A few of you might already be driving these new trucks filled with great features like Lane Departure Warnings, Collision Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, Intelligent Drivetrain and Active Break Assist. One of the most noticeable differences with these trucks is they are Automatic Transmission. Now I know many of you might have a negative reaction to this news, however, I want to make sure you understand the major benefits that automatic transmission provides to you:

  • The drive train runs and pulls more efficiently than a manual transmission can.
  • The engine gets optimal torque with lower RPMS which uses less fuel, and produces less wear on the transmission and gears.
  • The road speed stays consistent even with the lower RPMS so the sensation of being underpowered goes away.
  • They utilize engine braking and an automated manual transmission to be responsive to your input. Engine braking is powerful on downgrades and the truck will not “lose” a gear the way a human driver might while climbing a steep grade.
  • With the automatic, you provide engine braking and some feathering of the foot pedal only when necessary. No danger of “starting down” a steep grade in too high of a gear – which makes you safer!
  • In bad weather, these trucks allow you to lock in the differential as well as adjust the load so that the wheels do not “slip” and to make sure that most of the weight is on the wheels that provide power.
  • The automatic frees that part of your mind that focuses on handling the drive train which gives your mind the ability to notice potential hazards even faster. Managing congested traffic areas creates confidence and the ability to recognize hazards because your attention is not divided.
  • Automatic Trucks allow you the opportunity to be more vigilant while on the road and reduces fatigue."

I don't resist the 'self driving' trucks if there are some already, but I don't personally believe it will be here anytime soon. Perhaps within 10-15 years.

I did hear from AIT recruiter that self driving trucks were being tested in NV, not sure if this is related to Volvo developing one.

Looks like a Freightliner, huh?

Mercedes truck video is pretty cool. One thing about the Daimler's is that if the truck is such high tech, why still use metal key? Old... but I like the grill lights, that's cool.

Mercedes video had the camera to simulate the side mirrors, there should be not blind spots there. Rotating seats are cool as well. The only thing with Mercedes is the front looks like Star Wars Trooper helmet or some robot face in Sci-Fi movie.

C'mon, let's face it. The whole idea of all this "tech" is to enable the "hiring" of more unskilled, illiterate 3rd or 4th world "slaves" for the "plantation owners".

Weers I sin op?

:stirpot2:

look at it from the slaves side of things... the sleeper has more room than the corrugated iron and cardboard box shack he currently lives in with a wife and six kids, and he's paid to live in it instead of paying rent. He can live on a Kg pack of rice and half a salt fish per week, for less than the cost of a Big Mac meal, leaving lots of money to send home for the wife to buy a half dozen sheep or goats. He's not paying rent or mortgage in the US, having the sleeper berth provided as part of the truck, so he can send money home to the wife to buy a couple of acres. He doesn't need a car, since he has this transportation called a "Truck" to travel in, so he can send money home to his wife to buy a rickshaw that his oldest son can pedal around picking up fares in...

A couple of years in the seat in the US and he can go home and be a wealthy pillar of the community with a farm and animals to bring in an income and an employed independent son to look after him and his wife in their old age...

They'd LOOOVVVEEE to be a C R England driver!

It seems like they can get into just about any where. Not just CR England.

I dunno.... refrigerated trailers full of food? That amounts to a penthouse suite where most of these folks come from. Could be alot of missing trailers all over the country.... or some triad shipping the whole mess home for "luxury living".

One trailer probably feed the whole village for months, easily. :D:toothpick:

Nope!

You will still be considered as a driver, and you will get busted by the inward facing camera!

Can you imagine how hard it will be to stay awake in the driver seat of one of these things?
I don't care. I have no pity for anyone who voluntarily drives with an inward facing camera. By being submissive, they're helping to proliferate this disrespectful invasion of privacy.
... and Active Break Assist
This new garbage doesn't need any help in that department. o_O

I believe that the future of trucking will go this way, like it or not. And it's not just trucking, but automobiles, trains, planes (transportation in general), computer controlled homes and buildings, and the whole society in general. It's just matter of time.

One day they won't even need to import cheap labour slaves from Nowhereistan. They'll gene mod up planned obsolescence clones with a 10 year lifespan and call them androids.

Blade Runner will be REAL.

That will only happen to the ones who were taught to cry to the teachers instead of standing up for themselves and punching the bullies in the face.
Seriously, the only way for inward facing cameras to become the accepted norm is for the majority of truck drivers to be obedient little sheep and unwilling to tell the fleets where they can shove those cameras.

Where did you get the inward facing camera info? I don't believe my post said anything about it.
I like to face reality even if I don't like it. That way I can do something about it, but probably not going against it head on.
