self driving trucks

I would expect there to be an intermediate stage between driver trucks and driverless trucks...

Imagine the day of a local driver, you get up and have your morning meal (or midnight meal, or midafternoon meal, whatever your shift may be.) You drive to the Interstate exit plaza and park by the truckers lounge, in the lounge you have a cup of coffee while you wait for your truck to arrive. Once the truck pulls in and pages you, you wander out and hop in. Now you drive across town to the destination and get the load paperwork dealt with, open doors, back in, ad nauseum.
Once unloaded it's back to the interstate plaza to hop out and send the truck on it's way deadheading two towns over where another local driver will navigate it to pick up the load and return it to the interstate to run it's long and dreary automated way cross country to the receivers town.
Once your shift is over, it's back in your car and home to the loving embrace of your loving spouse (or the raucous snores depending on shift and/or gender)

You'd have to be hourly, not miley.

Have a very interesting ride...
I can't even begin to think how interesting the ride will be. the rides will be more interesting when trucks go cliffs or take the wrong routes :D:eek:. and the owners will be held responsible for the self driving vehicles actions no matter weather it's a car or an 80,000 pound missle. sorry I don't want my vehicle thinking for me we all ready have enough of that crap

Headline:

Driverless Truck Goes Insane
Hundreds dead, town in ruins

This could be more fun than I suspected!

:D:clap::taunt:
:popcorn::D:biglaugh:
id'e like to know how there gonna hold the driver responsible for computer errors:confused-96:. we need more real world testing on these things to make sure they work in every situation but the government seems to think they work in every situation I don't think so:stare1:

They will have other robots that do that when the truck whips into the truck stop . then the truck will do a 90 into a space while driversends texts .
they will also have kiosks to pay ect ect everything will be fully automated.. but from my understanding there trying to figure out just how much automation will be allowed with these things

Their end goal is to get out of paying drivers.

If they tried to transition to driverless trucks right now, there would be too much resistance.

The plan is to bite the bullet now, continue to pay drivers to babysit trucks while adding a hundred grand or so to the cost of the trucks, then wait til the general public gets used to the idea of having robot trucks behind them.

Then eventually they'll start phasing out the humans altogether, successfully destroying an entire industry in the name of greed.

I don't expect to see driverless trucks, at least not in my lifetime. Google just released a report on their driverless vehicles, and it tells me all I really need to know. Google realizes that a world full of driverless cars is not going to be a good idea, just imagine turning 80,000 pound trucks loose.

There have been multiple accidents in these driverless cars, though none have been the fault of the car itself, always somebody else, which is where the problem lies.

When it comes to accidents, it really doesn't matter who is at fault. People are going to make mistakes and potentially cause accidents. a car, or truck, that is being handled by a competent driver, almost always sees the mistakes made by others and has the time to perform whatever evasive action is necessary to avoid a collision.

The driverless truck, as perfect as that computer may be, can't look into an intersection and anticipate that a person is not paying attention and is about to turn right in front of them. They don't see the car flying up the sidestreet paying no attention to a red light. They don't see that some idiot left a sprinkler running while the outside temperature dropped to 26 Degrees and froze all the water that sprayed onto the road, so right through that red light they will slide.

When you take the human ability to anticipate the actions of others, you are going to have massive, deadly accidents. Just a couple of these accidents will put a trucking company out of business once a lawyer gets done with that minor little fact that nobody was controlling the truck.

Lots of big ideas sound good on paper, only to be squashed at some point once a little bit of common sense comes into play.

The ugliest one out there is the Lonestar...

Texans should be burning them on sight for leaching their state identity and associating the Lone Star State with the ugliest iron on the roads in the world.
