Pay Cut?

Not sure why anyone would have to take a pay cut to run local/regional and be home more. Shorter hauls generally pay significantly better than longer runs, so the carrier is not hurting by having a driver on as local regional. In my situation, owning the truck, I started narrowing my focus to upper midwest regional starting in '99. I do significantly better than I even did running around the rest of the country. By the house a couple times a week, off on the weekends, and take 3-4 weeks off a year, and doing very well. So I have always thought this was a scam that a driver should have to take a pay cut to be home more.

Here some of the local jobs pay good but there is plenty of work involved.

It's kinda like starting at the bottom with the company so it would possibly be a pay cut at first.

Neither my current job nor this other one pays hourly so I can't compare directly. I have to do some projecting based on their pay scales which are also different. I'm also basing it on having spoken to multiple drivers, one of whom used to work where I currently do. I can't go by what he's making though because he's a more experienced driver overall, so they started him higher than I will.

I mean it might not even be a pay cut at all, I just have to assume there's a possibility.

I'm currently actually working 6 days a week per the calendar... Monday to Saturday, Sunday to Friday. Our pay period is Wednesday to Tuesday so my paychecks make it look like I work 7 days one week and 5 days the other. I typically make about $200-$280 a day if I'm planned well but some days are super short and I might do a $120 run and be done, other days are full and I'm making $360 that day. I got a couple weeks of almost nothing but those almost $360 days and it was damn good paychecks but insanely exhausting. That literally put me in the hospital, burning the benefits of working so hard right up in medical bills. I told them never to do that to me again. $200-$280 a day is a better pace and the money is "good enough."

Being dedicated to one company has the downside of getting kinda screwed when they're on a slow period until drivers start quitting. If enough quit during a slow period, my famine becomes a feast again because they don't have to spread the loads so thin. There aren't a lot of famines but they do still happen. It's usually the stores ordering less, not so much the company whose products I run not having enough stuff to load.

Now here's the thing. I make what I make because I hustle. I don't know how to NOT hustle. I tried to slow down and smell the roses but I don't have it in me yet to stop unless I absolutely must (bathroom, mechanical, mandatory break, etc). I get that *don't waste time* from my father. My hustle means I've gotten as much as 3600 miles in a week...as a local northeast driver...and that's having 2 loads a day ie four drop & hooks. This is Pennsylvania, New Jersey (Elizabeth, for example), Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia, and occasionally Staten Island NY.

Anyway, that's why I asked if you all would take a pay cut or risk a potential pay cut for better hours or home time.

There's an upside to my current job though. I'm off this weekend but I already know what I'm doing Monday, how much I'm going to make, what time I have to leave, and approximately how long my day will be.

I don't always know this far ahead but sometimes I do and can adjust my start time.

I also know most of my routes by heart so I'm not really feeling my way around anymore, unless they add a new customer to my time slot for whatever reason.

I can even message dispatch from my phone to say I'll start later to avoid traffic. That keeps wasting hours to a minimum. Couldn't do that when I was a slip seater because you are signed out of the app forcibly when the next driver is assigned to it, but ever since I got my own day cab they just leave me on it.

That's another thing. Having your own truck on a slip seat account is kind of a big deal...and very nice. And I don't know how many thousands of dollars they've spent fixing it up for me. They didn't give me an old POS and just tell me to take it or leave it. I'm making it a fixer upper like some of my vehicles, and they don't seem to mind the expense.

*sigh* Decisions, decisions.

You have a point. I think my decision will be made for me soon.

I found THE house I want. If I can get my pre-approval this week then based on its location and condition I will want/need both more time off and less commuting. I'll choose the Regional Intermodal that way I'm only driving to and from work twice a week and *hopefully* making maximum money.

Home daily doesn't really mean much because you can't actually *do* anything AND get quality sleep. I'd rather work my 5 days through and then have two off every week to work on and enjoy the house. I can probably switch to home daily anytime if I feel like I want to be in my own bed more often. Might do that after I've finished fixing it up.

It's actually further away from rather than closer to the Schneider lot than I am now so I'd be commuting further every day. Might as well stay out and earn money.

DO NOT switch jobs until you get that final approval..!!!!!!!

sometimes job switching sets up red flags to the lenders......

best of luck to you.!!!!!!

and by the way, i too have to wait till my weekends, nearly impossible to even start a project during the workweek, but buying supplies (or ordering) can be done....

I mean 60k as a newbie is fantastic but what you gotta do for it kinda sucks and there's no UP here. Everyone is paid the same from Day 1 and experience doesn't mean anything pay wise. Great when you're new (as opposed to a fresh Swift roadie making 36k) but makes you think once you're in it a bit and realize this is it.
60k is above average at any experience level in trucking depending on what you are doing. However, money isn't everything. But don't forget money is involved in everything. i am about the same age as you. My recommendation to people our age is to put the full 55oo in to your Roth in addition to whatever your employer matches on the 401k. You can be a multi-millionaire (which is a good weird) when you are old and fat like "the rest of us." But you have to do it on purpose. If you don't you'll be fat lazy and broke. But maybe you knew that. Hint: 300,000 in today's money is about a million in thirty years. Can you live on that small a nest egg for 20 years with the health expenses of a geriatric?

Yeah definitely not. It's supposed to happen this week sometime though anyway. So it should be done before I even have a chance to make a move.

That's what I usually do as well...order the part or tool online then it's waiting when I'm off.

Sometimes I get a random reset day and if the project isn't too involved, I can do it then. But I've got a Grand Am GT sitting here that I want to pull the motor out of and replace all the seals and gaskets and whatnot, and clean up & repaint the control arms and cross members and such. That's definitely not something I want to do unless I have a couple days in a row. Even if I'm just using one day to psych myself up to start. Lol.

Then of course the new house will need yard work and if it's this one in particular, a new porch and other doodads.

Would you take a small pay cut if it meant consistency and home time?

I'm considering Schneider Intermodal. I make good money right now if I work hard-ish but I'm usually running 12 days in a row in a day cab. If I'm "lucky" I burn my hours enough to get a reset somewhere during those 12 days to make it 11 in a row, but still these day cabs beat your ass.

Also, I don't get paid time off and Schneider offers that plus better medical/dental. The Schneider options are day cab 4 on & 3 off or regional sleeper 5 on & 2 off for a little more cash.

If I like it and stay I'd end up earning more than I do now but I risk a lower paycheck at first, depending how I can do.

Be "careful" @dchawk81 ....those some of those "RECRUITERS" would give Used Car Salesmen a RUN for their Money....

What you'll probably Find Out is the SAME "Salt Mine" for Less Dough....

If ya really pulling 50k I'd stay put where ya at

best start slowing down now, get used to being a lazy fat ass like the rest of us.

Ya know something @GAnthony ya might be Right On The "MONEY" there...

For the last year or two I've made a "conscience" effort to eat better lost about 35 pounds even Quit SMOKING...and yet my life has NOT improved at all...

Instead I'm ALWAYS "hungry" and gosh I miss those Cigarettes I think about em everyday....

we all gain some weight and get lazier as we age. there just comes a point and time, when some of us say enough of this, and make changes for the better, while we still can.

Nah I'm thinking of giving up and going backwards....

If I die by 60 so be it.....I dread waking up Most of the time abyhow

I'm getting mad at every damn thing anymore and I think these long stretches are wearing on me.

Schneider Intermodal at least has a better schedule.

Yes, I would suck ass as a roadie.

Not to mention two of us were planned on an impossible pair of routes, and we have to fight for detention when we're late even when it isn't our fault.

We scramble to try to make it happen, and it doesn't happen anyway. And then we get a mark for failing the load.

It's bullshit.

I'm not angry and frustrated when they give me time but when they crunch me I get pissed at delays.

On a happier note, the PruhTar doesn't shimmy anymore and tracks straight again so I wasn't tired like I used to be.

I still say it needs drive tires though. A couple of 'em look cupped. I think they're what's making it hobble a little.
