Motorcycle Ramp?

C-Ya Junior.....You're gettin' to boring for me.

Try not to fall of your bicycle on your way to school tomorrow.

ok daddy ill try... since you made it to top 10 now im boring to you? thats the problem with these people, gotta get jobs!!! not freaking talk crap till reach top 10 lol

ohh **** you repeated??? ****... drunk ass (i repeated) its because your white ass is slow

Maybe you should stick to music and leave truckin' to the truckers, eh?

I was going to mess with you some, but it just wouldn't be fair. The gig is up. Too many of us know who you really are. I don't mind young people being on these forums and even encourage it. But please don't try to match wits with BW9. He has almost 40 years in this business. He'd probably be happy to share his knowledge and experience with you if you approached him respectfully and as you really are.

There's nothing wrong with being young and trying to fit in. We've all been there. I was one of the nerdiest kids in school. Happily, I (mostly) grew out of it. You will, too.

Really?

I hate to break it to you junior....But that's not a rule!

A friend of mine pulls for Sammons and he stretched his tractor about 4 feet and installed a ramp system to carry his full dress Harley between the truck and trailer and has been running it for a few years and through multiple inspections with no problems.

I've seen some guys with a dromedary box behind the sleeper with a pull-out ramp for loading a motorcycle. I think I saw it in an article in one of those truck stop freebie rags that you grab to read while you're waiting for the waitress to bring your food out. The one I was reading about had a winch that would pull the bike up a steep ramp, and it was remote-controlled so the winch could be controlled while sitting on the bike to balance it with your feet so it doesn't fall over. If I remember it right, they designed the ramp to be just long enough that at the top, the bottom of the bike wouldn't high-center. They wanted the ramp to be short as possible.

Lots of guys have huge sleepers like this one....View attachment 6813And yet you seem to think that someone will bust you for putting a bicycle between your truck and trailer?
Or on a bike rack in front of your radiator?

Because of length? What about those "Moose Killer" bumpers? they are bigger than a bicycle or motor driven bicycle, Are they not?

Being on the front of a truck, there has been some mention in this thread that the Iowa cop had a problem with it because the item carried there wasn't related to the trucking duties. I've seen 2-wheeled dollies that stow on the front of day cabs before. And the Bambi-smasher bars are basically a "bumper".

If the laws, .. or my company, .. would allow it, I'd have made a bike rack a long time ago that fits into the brackets for the tow hooks on the Volvo's. There are two of them. I've never measured them but I believe they're basically the same as a 2" receiver hitch on a pickup truck. Shove the square tube or bar-stock into the square hole, and stick a hitch-pin through it. The company made some very simple & not very effective Bambi-Catapults that use those mounts. (The reason I call them Bambi Catapults is because they're just two horizontal pieces of square tube and nothing rising vertically. They're low enough they only hit the deer's legs, and the theory among the drivers is that with the downward sloped hood, they'd just launch the deer up into the windshield instead of letting the radiator absorb the impact.)

My steers are the 6150 lb type and I am almost always at 12,200+/-.

My Schwinn with any kinda rack would throw me over. Anything I wanted to carry would have to go behind the sleeper.

Fixed.

Your Schwinn and a rack weigh over 150# together? Are you 12,200 with full tanks? If so, the weight will burn off in fairly short order. I tend to run my steers more toward the heavy end as well. Full tanks put me at 12,280 with a reefer unit. Empty, my steers run 11,140.

My Schwinn is a workout bike....

You got the tire gross correct.. I didn't feel like crawlin' outta the bunk and looking. My weight varies from 12,200 up to 12,800 or so...

The first scale I cross is 80 miles south of a pick-up on I94 outta Fargo in MN. So I have to scale full. Options are slim to none.

Exactly. Carrying a bike behind the cab won't matter then.

Length laws are different now. I'm 75' long, truck and trailer. Florida is the only state I need a permit for.

Its not that something behind the sleeper made the truck longer. Its arbitrary. If the truck is over 65ft its not legal. If its under 65ft its legal.

A Kenworth T-660 hooked to a 53 footer is 73 feet long with the 5th wheel in the center of it's slide range.

A cop measured it for me once.

Right, so the IA law about carrying cargo (ie: personal motorcycle) outside the cab would apply.

I just say that with all the recent whining and regulations regarding truck driver health & fitness requirements, they oughta make a federal law that over-rides all local or state laws, making it legal to carry a bicycle on the outside of the truck.

There's been plenty of times when I've been stuck at a shipper or receiver & I can't bobtail out cuz of the stupid e-logs & the company's stupid policy about the use of personal conveyance. Or if I'm at a truck stop with either no restaurant, or one that sucks (like that crap-hole in Virginia Beach) when there are better restaurants 5 min. away on a bicycle, but too far to walk.

This is what I carry with me, I call it the Peterbilt breakdown insurance policyView attachment 6817

There are a few companies out there that sell nice aluminum super light weight ramps. The set I have is a pair to load a lawn tractor and they are about 8 feet long each. They work great for us since we use step decks, I do not think they would work well to go five feet in the air, but I suppose you could make a stand in the center and bridge them. As wobbly as I am, I wouldn't try it
