Let's Argue About Motorcycles

Earlier today I went into town to go to the beer store and there was a non-stop, never-ending stream of Harleys riding north on IL Rt 50. After waiting what seemed like 7 hours for a gap to pull out and make a left, I saw my chance and tore the hell out of there, my brand new tires making a nice squealing sound. I get into town and the place is CRAWLING with them. They were at every restaurant and gas station, and there was still a steady supply of them coming off of county road 9. At the beer store the lady said there were TWO THOUSAND of them in town for some kind of memorial day thing at the veterans home in Manteno, IL and she said that the Illinois governor was supposed to be among them. But I saw two of them with "Toys for Tots" flags on their bikes. Going back home the steady stream of Harleys was still flowing and they were still stopped and hanging out at the Shell station. I've never seen a group of bikers THAT BIG.

I've been considering getting a bike one of these days but with as little time as I would have to ride, it may be a better financial decision to just rent one a few weekends a year. With the short riding season here in Ohio and having to work 6 days a week it seems like it would be a waste to drop big money on a bike. Does anybody know what it would cost to rent a bike for a weekend?

I know they rent them but have no idea on the cost. I live way further north then OH and I get plenty of riding in, but then I'm home 3 days a week, this summer was home for the whole month of July, got about 3500 miles in.

In my neck of the woods the Copsicles ride BMW's. Now there is a bike that will make Harley and Kawasucki look stupid. If nothing else, it sure is a nice looking bike.

Personally, I've owned all kinda different bikes. Dirtbikes, tour bikes, cruisers, sport, dressers... I only bike I absolutely hated was my Kawasaki Voyager. It had a 1300/6 in it and was top heavy as hell. I preferred my Goldwing to the Voyager in every way. Kawasaki had it's day once a long time ago. But now days the only Kawasaki I drool over is the Concours.

My dad has dropped his Goldwing more times than I can keep track of. The seat is too high for him and his right leg is 3" shorter than his left. A few weeks ago I had to go and give him a jump start because he said it stalled on him. He'd changed his battery and hadn't re-connected the alternator wire to the battery. (I put a Geo Metro alternator kit on it cuz the stock Honda charging system works about as well as any other Honda charging system) What I didn't know after I gave him a jump-start with my car was that the reason the engine had died was because he dropped it again, and this time he cracked a rib. So now he's a couch vegetable until it heals. He wants to get a different bike, one with a shorter seat height.

If he's having trouble holding it up have him look at those three wheel Can-am's. My neighbor got one of those this summer and loves it. He had to get rid of his Harley cause he's getting older and can't hold him, his wife and his bike up anymore.

My dad rode that Goldwing from here (Chicago area) to my grandma's just south of Nashville, then he went down to New Orleans before heading west. He hit a coyote somewhere in New Mexico, got the damage fixed in Phoenix, then continued on to my sister's in San Diego. A month or so later, he headed back east. He got a warning citation for vagrancy (yes, VAGRANCY) in Arkysaw somewhere because he was taking a nap in a concrete culvert at a construction site. (too cheap for a motel room) At that same time, my sister and her family were moving from San Diego to Virginia Beach, so my dad met up with them back at my grandma's in Columbia, TN. A few days later, he followed them the rest of the way to VA Beach, spent another month with them, rode back to my grandma's for a while, then came home.

All those miles, and I forgot to mention he was towing a small trailer with a recumbent bicycle on it, and he never dropped the bike once. And that was only 3 or 4 years ago.

Now he can't even cruise around town without falling over at red lights?? I don't get it. He's not THAT old and feeble. He's 62 I think.

Gonna get a cruiser next spring. My sportbike days are long gone it's just that sometimes I'm just not smart enough to remember that. Soooo I gotta gets me something I can just tool around and look at the scenery.

Anything with even a hint of cornering prowess will cause me to forget my age, dwindling reflexes and lack of talent which all leads to my dumb ass making an emergency room visit.

That was the case with my last scoot......Kawi ZRX1100....OOOOOHHHHH you could just ride that bike nice and easy and have that 1100 motor pull every once in a while. Well maybe YOU could, me being......well me, used it to attack cloverleafs and actually took it to a couple of track days. I don't need that type of temptation in my life anymore.
It would be like locking Rosie O in a Dunkin Donuts and tellin her "look but don't swallow the whole effin place"

INSANITY AT ITS FINEST ..........
How about a nice Sunday drive in the countryside?

Isle Of Man TT Motorcycle Race - This Is Extraordinary
Check this out, The Isle of Man TT motorcycle race. Still considered to be the most dangerous bike race in the world.
Over 37 miles of road on an island that still has public lashings. If you crash and don't die, you are considered to be lucky.
Now days these guys are going faster than ever. Amazing to watch. Put the video on high resolution and make it big.
It really gives you an idea of just how fast these crazies are going.

I always tell people that it looks hairier from trackside then it does being in the saddle and racing..........this circuit is the exception. It's just Hairy with a capitol H.

Funny thing is the undisputed King of IOM, Joey Dunlop, looked and behaved just like a regular dude. He was 48 when he was killed racing and if you saw him in the pub, he coulda been anyone of us here on the board, drinking and smoking and just generally yucking it up. Course, once he fired up his race bike, the difference between him and the rest of us became oh so apparent. Basically, if it had two wheels Mr. Dunlop could ride it faster around IOM than anyone else. It simply did not matter the size: 1000cc twin, Tz 750, 125cc gp bike.

Two Angels are flying over Boston Garden and they see a man shooting (and making) shot after shot. The first Angel asks "who is that?" Second Angel answers "That's Larry bird.....he thinks he's God"
They fly over Daytona and see a lone car out on the track. "Who's that?" Dale Earnhardt......he thinks he's God"
They fly over IOM and see a lone bike Ripping around the course. "Who's That?" That's God......he thinks he's Joey Dunlop"

Yer Maun indeed!

You know how you know you're around a IOM racer? "They" clank really loud when he walks.

The Manx TT is the coolest road race ever.

No doubt about it.

Nothing will ever compare, on wheels, wings or water.

Ever.

And Joey Dunlop was the best.

We rode up to Mountain City, Tn. to see my kids. There is this road there everybody goes to ride. I didn't know it existed until my daughter was wanting my to take her on it. What a fun road to ride. They call it "The Snake!" Anyone ever heard of it?

I took some video if you wanna check it out.

Looks like the Tail of the Dragon, at Deals Gap.

So Tennessee has more than one cool road to run. The fall colors are great! And I'd have a ball in one of my Z's.
