First and foremost.. I have just received my CDL, so when I say I'm new..I'm really New.
I am a 55 year old female. My kids are grown and have a families of their own. I have been on the road before, driving expedite but never have I drove a big truck. Never thought I would, especially now since the demographics has changed drastically in the trucking industry. I live in the vallies of Virginia in the beautiful southwest region of the Appalachian mountains. Reason why I wanted to drive is simple. I want to make enough money to buy me a patch of unzoned land where I can homestead peacefully and live off the land.

Awesome plan. I'm currently working on a high tech chicken coop on wheels that I can move around the yard. Also trying to figure out a reliable fully automatic watering system for the garden and greenhouse, and a system that opens & closes the greenhouse vents as needed to regulate temperatures and humidity so I can leave it unattended for a few days when I go out of town.
The chicken coop I'll be able to tow to a neighbors farm so he can babysit them.
Are you going to run OTR, or regional/local?
Every currently active member on here is 40+ and has years or decades of experience. You can bombard us with any questions you have about the industry.

I sent in an application for one trucking company that would hire new CDL holders, but they wouldn't move forward because I have a gap in my ten year work history period. So I have found another company that only require a three year work history, but I don't know if they will hire me because I don't have three months or better driving experience. It's all so tiresome.

What I did when I started in 2004 and had an employment gap was I just said I was self employed during that time. I was told the feds require them to verify ten years of employment history after 9/11 to make sure you didn't spend that employment gap time at a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.
I wasn't even old enough at the time to have a ten year work history. But I think the requirement was only 5 years.

Like @Duck said, you can't always tell the truth. If you can't dazzle them with diamonds, baffle them with bullshit. Sugar coat it and use those @FarAwayEyes and it just may work in your favor.
In my eyes, local would be the best for you if you can get into it. You sleep in your own bed, bathe in your own bathroom and eat food from your kitchen. There is a lot to be said for that. Even if you have to do a few years on the road to get your feet wet, it may well be worth it. Go for it. If you don't at least try, you never know what it could into.
Back in 1979 I walked into the Shell Oil terminal and asked if they needed drivers.

Less than one, but it's all backing up and parking.

I turned in the next day and was put with a trainer in a week after physicals, drug test and background check were done.
I just on a whim did that and took a chance. I retired from them after 25 years, get a nice pension and their stock plan is paying nice dividends today. You don't know if you don't try.

if your single with no kids if you have a house you could rent it out to boost up your income and just live in the truck fulltime and just grab a hotel from time to time and invest your $$$$. have an exit plan!!!
