Well if you're planning on heading east into NC on I-40 better find a new route. The interstate is washed out in the gorge and closed indefinitely.

I-40 to remain closed in Western NC after flooding washed out portions of the interstate, NCDOT says

NCDOT said the Pigeon River raged Friday along I-40, creating dangerous conditions and causing mudslides in the gorge that caused major damage to the interstate.

Is this that section where trucks are strictly limited to the right lane?

I recall it being closed for long periods of time in the past because of rock slides.

Yes, it has been closed multiple times due to rock slides because NC won't blast the mountain back from the road like Tennessee.

Yeah western NC is just red on the 511 map and advised no travel.
