Hunting/Fishing photos and stories

I wouldn't have shot it if it's rare.

Not that I would give a rat's ass if there's a group of people who think it's "sacred"... (I eat beef even though people in India think they're sacred, for example.).. but if it's an endangered or threatened species I ain't taking it.

I've had this buck on camera for four years. He was at least 2 1/2 the first time he showed up. We see him early and he disappears by August. He was harvested about two miles north of where he spends his summers. Very easy to pick out with that split ear. View attachment 75207View attachment 75208View attachment 75209
What's up with the dull, rounded point antlers in the bottom two pictures but not in the first pic with the blonde girl?

It was in velvet. The antlers were still growing.
I just had to look that up. Never seen rounded antlers except on elk and moose.

To me though, deer are just these incredibly stupid creatures that like to dive in front of cars and trucks.

Hunting is a waste of time in Illinois due to the ridiculous laws. We pretty much have to go to Wisconsin to hunt with a rifle.

Do their fur patterns change too as they grow into maturity? I wouldn't even think it was the same deer if it wasn't for that ear.

They will get grayer as they get older.

I can't hunt with a rifle where I'm at. Im two miles south of the line. I have a purpose built slug gun. Its accurate to 150 yards. I'd never shoot it that far. Problem is slugs are slow and lack the knock down power of a rifle.

If it wasn't for the f'd up deal were going through there was a bill that was almost a slam dunk last year to rid mn of the ridiculous shotgun zones.

I looked it up once for Illinois and decided it's too stupid to even bother with in this state.

You can only hunt with a shotgun (slugs), or a pistol or revolver. I think muzzle loaders are allowed.

Shotguns can only hold three shells, as if it even matters.

My father in law has 40 acres of woods downstate. He hunts squirrels with a 12 gauge. Says you gotta aim to almost miss them so you just hit them with the edge of the spread so you don't end up blowing them to pieces. I have no idea why he doesn't just use a 22. It's his own property and it's just squirrels. These laws are ridiculous.

Not my hunting story but a hunting story.
My cousins were out hunting this year and all the boys had guns and the one girl had a crossbow. She got 5 deer and the boys got none. :D
That works out well for me because she is the only one that sends me venison meat.
