Garden pics

A couple years back I planted the Lil Bigs apple trees. I was supposed to get apples my first year. Didn't happen, never did get apples from those 2 trees. I just gave up on them.

Apples require cross pollination from another variety.
I have a Jonathan and a Winesap.
That's why my peaches and plums are the same, but the cherries, apples and pears are not - 2 different kinds.
The self pollinating fruit can do it themselves.

Yep, no doubt.
Those are semi-dwarf so they start bearing around 3 years. I have 3 tiny apples on one now, about the size of a cherry tomato, lol.

Cool, so in about 3 yrs you will get ya some of that applewood for the cooker.....lol.

A couple years ago, a tornado knocked down one of my apple trees.

And my dumb ass dragged it over to the burn pile with the tractor and burned it. I should've saved that wood for smoking meats.

Yes....yes you should have.:rolleyes2: Way to go dumbazz. lol/jk. Well on the bright side maybe, just maybe, realizing the error of your ways......next time you will save that wood for the smoker.

Just came back from the big garden in Bat Cave.
Everything doing good..........

Becka tending the carrots.........

(The big, tall, green patch sitting in the right hand 1/3 is an old flower garden with some old roses. lilies and some wild strawberries we found last week. I'm thinking of adding some herbs to grow along as a border. It was the only thing Mom said was off limits when we got the ok to do this)

Down at the bottom with a row of the "3 sisters" corn, beans and squash - I think we forgot the squash, but that's ok we have a whole row.............

Row of tomatoes with squash, cukes and potatoes next door........

Potatoes and onions...........

And my ingenuous sprinkler system. 2 does the whole garden, but haven't needed it so far.

Wow! I have never attempted that big of a garden, although I would love to. How much time does it take each day to maintain it?

I'm already wondering how far away and is it fenced, come harvest time, lol.

We spend about 10 hrs a week, spread out over maybe 3 days. Not too bad once ya make the commitment to do it.

I'm not putting out as much as I did last year. I have one garden for corn, one for other veggies, and my wifes gladiola garden.

I'm planting the corn at intervals so it doesn't all come on at once. I will plant 3 more times a week apart. The corn I planted a week ago is almost an inch tall, but it doesn't show in the picture very good.

I will plant some more green and lima beans soon.

I included our five little mutts in the flower garden picture.

You garden looks really nice. So do the pups.

The corn behind the beans and squash is field corn in a 38 acre field. It used to be part of the home place. All my sweet corn is in picture one. I guess the road beside it is busy enough that the deer stay away. We have lots of them around.

Rebel has nice straight rows. You can see in my first picture, I don't aim so straight when I'm planting.

He used mason line to make the perfectly straight rows. But I don't get why it's still there after it's been planted. I notice some people leave it up.

They LOOK straighter because of the lines, lol.
We left them up for a few reasons.......

1) I'm lazy and it makes it easy to weed the foot paths, like having to stay inside the lines in a coloring book. Also when sprouts are coming up, it makes you take greater care when weeding "inside" the lines.

2) It prevents people from walking willy-nilly across the rows. The ends of the rows have a string across and the foot paths don't.

3) In some rows I have string beans, cucumbers and other plants that like to climb, and I can run additional strings for them to climb on.

But mainly, I'm just lazy.

The great zucchini invasion has begun. I have already shredded and froze two quart-sized freezer bags, gave away a sack full, and still getting more each day.

I have also picked a few bell peppers, but I use them almost as fast as I pick them. I'm sure that will change once summer kicks in and we no longer have these 70's and low 80's temperatures.
