diabetic diet.....

The best control I've had over my blood sugar has been when I follow a ketogenic diet. She definitely needs to get sugar (especially soda) and refined carbs (breads, cereals) out of her diet. Prepared foods are really bad - they allmost all have a huge slug of sugar in them - get used to reading nutrition labels and watch out for any ingredient that had a "ose" suffix. Thats a dead giveaway on something that's being disguised through a trade name, but is really a sugar.

Its tough. We used to hand out similar plans to our patients as these: 1,200-Calorie ADA Diet But some of the best diet plans I witnessed my diabetics follow were heavy on the vegetable and lean meat, very low carbs but good carbs such as those high in fiber and would minimize cheating with treats. Sugar free treats may take the edge off but I've seen some eat a whole bag of sugar free cookies when maybe one small real one would have been healthier. It all depends on how high your sugar is.

My aunt's A1C was over 9 and three months later I have it down to 5.6. Low carb healthy fats (LCHF) and no sugar and no grains(NSNG) are the keys. Basically if you can reduce the insulin spikes diabetes can be reduced or even reversed. The things that spike insulin are processed carbs and sugar. If you only cooked real food with nothing from a package you would have a great start. Avoiding processed foods is only the beginning, but it is the simplest to eliminate. Dr. Fung has had great success with hundreds of patients in his program and I have lost 60lbs following his methods and feel great.

I was taught how to cook by a farmer's daughter and a couple aunts.

Hell, I even can my own tomato sauce. About the only thing I buy to cook is pasta. And that's been minimized for years.

My cardiologist has instructed me to INCREASE my salt and alcohol intake. Go figure.

The hardest thing she'll have to do is kick the sugar habit. It's like a drug, your body craves the stuff, and it gives you a "high."

In some ways it's worse than trying to get off of heroin. Walk into a Love's truck stop - they're the worst of the bunch for this and look around. Check out the food choices: nothing but junk food, and most if it has a healthy slug of sugar in it, including those fruit cups. About the only thing a type II diabetic can walk out of there with that won't make things worse is a cup of coffee or a bottle of water. You have to walk past all of what is essentially poison to do it, all the while your body is shouting for you to grab a moon pie.

I read an article last year on America's sugar habit. Because it's become an additive in prepared foods, the average American consumes between 50 and 75 teaspoons of sugar every day. When I was a child, and Moms had to cook (and took pride in it,) they had a fit when you put a second teaspoon of sugar on your cereal in the morning. How can you not risk becoming a diabetic with a huge daily dose of that crap?

That doesn't include the stuff that your body turns into glucose. Starches, grains, highly refined carbs like pastas and bread, fruit sugars - all of this increases the effect of that sugar on your system. If you're going to reverse diabetes, you have to kick the sugar habit completely, and get the foods that your body readily converts into glucose out of your diet. A ketogenic diet forces your body to convert from burning sugar for fuel, to burning fats. Google "keto diet" or "ketogenic diet."

Basically it's what Adkins was getting at, but you have to limit the protein as well. Lots of high-quality fat calories, some protein and veggies. Good news though... bacon is back on the menu!

:D

Wife started metformin today
It's going to make her feel like crap for awhile. Don't let her make the mistake of not taking it.

Extremely high blood sugar levels can kill you. We had one driver in his twenties pulled out of his truck dead a number of years back because if this. It was the impetus for Robert Low to start a wellness program including a full time wellness staff and voluntary free programs at Prime.

Sude effects: Her urine will stink because of the glucose shedding, and the drug. A sugar binge will give her the worst runs she's ever had.

You need to get her a blood sugar meter. They're available over the counter at any pharmacy. Walmart and Target carry them. The point of this is that you and she will have to take an active role in her care. Being passive and just doing what the doctor says isn't enough

When choosing one, look at the price of the test strips. That's important. She'll be using a lot of them, especially in the beginning.

Everyone's reaction to diet is different. To find out how foid affects her sugar level, she'll need to experiment with it. That means testing 2 hours after eating to see where her sugar ended up at. 1 jour after to check on sugar levels spiking.

The period after sleeping is important. Your body starts to think it's starving because of the fast. It commands the liver to start secreting stored glucose into the bloodstream to compensate. Long-term monitoring of her sugar when she wakes up will help you to keep track of her progress, along with the A1C test result. A spreadsheet is a good idea to track it.

That's why test strip cost is important. You want lots of data to figure this out.

Exercise... it goes with the rest of it. It helps the body to use its insulin to burn off glucose. That's what type II does to you... it lessens the ability of the body to use its natural insulin to clear it of glucose.

Its why use see guys walking endless loops around the truck stop. Aerobic activities... walking, running, a dance class seem to work best.
