Alchemy 101, and still the only 20 thread you need to read.

monthofmay.webp

That's my month so far.

You see that little part between 16 and 17?

MONDAY...I was headed into L.A. to deliver and told my dispatcher I had been offered another load by the L.A. terminal over to Phoenix. Loading Tuesday, delivering Wednesday.

He says, "Ok, then bounce to Houston, we'll pay you mileage, and there's always loads out of there."

Then, Tuesday, after I tell him I'm loaded and headed to Pheonix, he says, "After you're empty, go to Ft. Worth, and wash out there, or there might be a clean trailer, we can just drop and hook and be ready to load."

WOW...hey great...I think...this guy is finally realizing what forward planning is, and understands that I'm not out here to waste fucking time (in stark contrast to my previous job...I know...shut up).

So, I pay to park at Danny's Big Rig Ripoff in Phoenix, and deliver. Then, I make it to Pecos, TX (#16, notice it's past the 10/20 split).

I text him in the morning, and start out for Ft. Worth. Phone conversation has me a little unsettled, so I stop in Monahans, TX and call.

He actually says, "I don't know what to do".

This is now THURSDAY...I've told him since MONDAY I was headed east, and since he got mad at me self-dispatching last week, it was up to him.

He calls me while I stop in Monahans, and says, "I'm not real familiar with Texas, where would Deer Park be?"

"THAT'S DOWN BY HOUSTON, YOU'RE LUCKY I STOPPED BECAUSE IT'S ONLY LIKE 60 MILES BACK TO I-10 FROM HERE INTO FT. STOCKTON WHICH I HAPPEN TO BE A LITTLE FAMILIAR WITH."

"Okay, well don't get mad..."

"TOO LATE. LEARN GEOGRAPHY, AND MAKE A PLAN AHEAD OF TIME!"

It seems to be a regular thing at thing company to handle ONE. THING. AT. A. TIME.

There's guys sitting in tank washes for days on end, with no idea when they'll get out, or where they'll go...or whatever.

Yeah...just...whatever.

Nope. Not this white boy.

Make a fucking plan. Plan 3 steps ahead if you never have before. Do NOT waste my time out there. I will not be sitting in tank washes like I have no life.

Here's the deal folks, for some reason, I am semi-autonomous at this company. As a company driver for my affiliate, I can do what they need me to, but if I'm in the "system" then apparently I can do what I want. I'm hauling a load right now for another terminal (that doesn't pay so well, but beats sitting in a tank wash), and because I'm doing this terminal a "favor" she's putting me to the top of the list for a load back into the midwest after I'm done with this one.

When I can enter a totally different trucking application I've never done before, on an eLog, which I've never done before, drive 2100 miles to Los Angeles, get loads, and make more money than I did back home...and you have FOUR DAYS notice I'm headed in a certain direction, and you still have no plan, or direction...you're a pretty shitty dispatcher. Period. 20+ years in this industry has taught me that much.

So I'm sorta a self-dispatching company driver. Terminals call me when they see I'm headed into their area, and offer me loads. I can say yes or no.

Weirdest job I've ever had, and the only problems...*ahem* PROBLEMS I've had are when I have to deal with my guy back in Wisconsin.

We're gonna have a discussion when I get back about things like "integrity" and "truthfulness" and "honesty". It will go nowhere. He "knows someone" in management at this affiliate.

BUT...much as I might bitch...and honestly...what else do I do...I still have high hopes for this gig.

Stay tuned.

@Keendriver I definetly do NOT want to see your search engine history.

Found out today by talking with another driver that my terminal is in fact in complete turmoil. One of the assistant ladies just straight up walked out of the place when I was up in Oregon 2 weeks ago or so, so my guy is actually doing the work of 3 people.

This morning he called me as I was heading across TN back to KY and told me he was thinking about a Lima, OH to Sturtevant, WI. That was at like 8am. He'd told me previously we have clean trailers at Calvert City, so I can probably just hook one and be ready.

340 miles, and 5.5 hours later, I've still heard nothing, so I get to the terminal in KY, drop my trailer, and start my 30 minute break. I call to see which trailer he wants me to grab. First, his cell, which has no answer, then the terminal itself to see if maybe someone else had a clue, no answer, then I wait 15 minutes and call his cell again.

Once again, he picks up the phone, and has an attitude.

"You just need to bear with me...."...this and that blaa blaa.

Then I search for the first trailer, not there. Not even on the terminals morning yard check. I talk to the girls in the office, nothing.

I call him back, and get more attitude. He gives me two more trailer numbers, including the one I just brought in, which is now empty waiting to be washed out.

"How long is it going to be until that one is washed?" (Like how the hell am I supposed to know)

"Don't know I didn't talk to anyone in the tank wash."

"Well can't you go see?

So, being the nice guy I do go see. This terminal unloaded it, but it's not even signed into the tank wash. SO...being the nice guy, I sign the damn thing in, and they notify me it's an easy wash and it will be ready by morning.

Meantime, I spot one of the other numbers he gave me, so I hook that one, and text him the trailer situation. Doesn't need a reply, and not an immediate thing, so a text is fine, and start heading to Lima, OH.

Bout an hour goes my and my friend out in the L.A. terminal tells me I better make damn sure he's got that load set up. So, I call him again...and get MORE attitude...to verify that he has in fact got the Ohio booked. He confirms he does, so I proceed to beat feet, and run out my day.

When I dispatched, I was handling between 135 and 150 trucks a week. The job was way too much, and no matter how many times I told management about that, they disagreed and one day I just up and walked the hell out.

I forsee that in this mans future if management at this affiliate doesn't get him some help in that place, and fast.

But in the meantime, I give him PLENTY of time to come up with a plan EVERY time, and EVERY time he acts like I'm the problem and a huge inconvenience. I don't need the attitude...every single time I talk to this guy.

At this point, 10pm, I'm still not officially dispatched on that Ohio load.

That came from a site you turned me on to smart guy.

I think I remember that now. I forgot my password and they won't let me back on. See if you can put in a good word for me.

I've been in WI and MN the last 2 weeks and running the ass off. On Peroxide, mostly. Been through the house a bunch so that's cool.

This last paycheck I brought home more on a weekly rate than I did in heavy haul, but that only paid every 2 weeks so at a high salary you really got hammered in taxes and such.

I'm thinking...for all my frustrations these last 2 months, things are getting ironed out, and this can, and will work nicely.

I'll have to get a beater commuter car at some point. I do live 115 miles from the terminal and won't always be able to bring the truck home...so this might just be the impetus for my zombie apocalypse motorcycle, which will be good in summer months. There is no good answer for Wisconsin winters. The zombies will all just freeze in place until next spring anyway. Then they start moving again when they thaw out. It's really unsettling. I read that in World War Z...the book...not the movie.

...

I'd like a BMW but good lord the prices on them. One of them has a transmission with 4 different riding modes. Can you imagine the repair bills on that??

So, for now, I'm back and forth between Wisconsin and Minnesota, and things are working out.

Those of you who have my screen shots and texts know.

Let's hope it continues to go well.

And let's hope the wife lets me buy a friggin bike.

Seen a few Street Glides in National Powersports that are nice...but I do like to leave pavement in an instant....I dunno...

Rambling...

No, bouncing back and forth across 29/94 all last week.

I slept at the terminal in Appleton last night, and looked at the dispatch board, I'll probably be doing it all this week too.

Actually thats not fair of me. She's not against it per se, I just like to make excuses and blame her.

Actually that's not true.

What really happens is that, I hate financing, and if I get a pile of cash, I usually throw it at the house, or the family, or the kids. Campers, Ireland, endless Karate tournaments those few years...tell anyone and I'll kill ya.

Allentown. Have to be home Friday to sign mortgage papers and this genius sends me 1000 miles from home with little prospect of getting back in time.

2 weeks running right past the house, and the one week I need to be home for something...and I get sent out here.

Replace "lawyers" with "dispatchers"...and quote Shakespeare.

Yup. Same dude.

When I was out there he even went so far as to tell me my Affiliate was getting zero revenue because I was pulling other affiliates trailers and I wasn't going to get paid for those loads.

I really have no idea why he said that...but I shrugged it off because I know better.

Seems like...for the local guys, and the outruck and back loads like the Peroxide trailers, he's just fine.

You know...the stuff that's been in place for years, and pretty much runs itself...

Everything else... totally clueless.

I've found out that he was only in that seat about a week and a half before I came aboard, so he's very new to his job also. So he might not have been familiar with pulling trailers for mother terminals and how it works.

Also...ever since the health insurance deductions started, they've screwed up my pay. Over charged me 2 weeks in a row, then when it was reimbursed it made no sense in the pay stub.

We're supposed to get breakdown sheets of what loads we do per week, with reimbursements and such listed. Doesn't happen.

Last week I bugged the shit out of him for 3 days and he finally angrily printed some.

I need them for every week...since the beginning...for taxes.

I friggin give up.

This terminal is a mess, and will be until management gets off their FIB ass, and comes up with the money to get this guy some decent help.

For all the time ls he has genuinely dropped the ball... a lot of it isn't his fault. I see that because I see a lot of similarity between his job, and mine when I dispatched.

Totally overwhelmed...can't get anything done because of all the BS...and management keeps saying everything is fine.

The problem at this affiliate is management.

I'll skip the details of the total truck and trailer breakdown last weekend and the 12 hours I lost sitting in a Beet field.
