2018 gardening thread

I have four tomatoes and five pepper plants up now. Still have their primary baby leaves, but they should be getting secondaries soon. I'll have to reseed some of the cells. Been long enough on some of them, they should be well up by now.

Yesterday and today, I was out sorting dirt and gravel again. The damn squirrel was on the fence when I went out there yesterday. Little jerk followed me out to the garden, griping at me the whole way. When I got out there, he sat on that fence about six feet from me bitching me up one side and down the other. I think he's annoyed about the cage around the strawberry plants.

I bought a john deere 2355 tractor (67 hp) with a front end loader.I have quite
a few uses for it,including clearing some land on a small creek behind our house.
So,I am thinking of finding a stump grinder to use on the 3 point hitch.
I figure I have about 50 large trees to remove.
Any ideas on a stump grinder or stump drill?
I will be on the lookout for a roto tiller to pull behind the tractor amnd dig up a garden spot.Any recommendations?

I stop in to THE Home Depot and they had some plants set out. Early stuff you know, spinach, cabbage, kale, collards, broccoli, etc....
3.78 per plant! plus sales tax..... that's 4.01 per plant out the door. I'm talking small just shed the baby leaves kinda plants!
I let out an audible "You've got to be god damn kidding me!" (The older I get the louder it comes out)
I would like to pick up about 4 collards, 8 spinach, 6 kale, 6 cabbage, 6 broccoli.
Do the math! That's.................... hold on .................$120.30 :mad-97:
They can go fuck themselves!
I'll have to run out and grab some seeds I guess.

that is way too much, here there is a Barbee family whoo has a greenhouse business for many years we go buy our stuff from, but 120?
heck with that

So... My babies are coming up pretty quickly, now.
I reseeded all of the Dorsetts, Reapers, Jalpenos, both types of Serranos, Mini-Belles and OR Spring tomatoes last week.
I just reseeded all of the Egg Yolk tomatoes, three of the Pear tomatoes, three Abraham Lincoln tomatoes, and two Beefsteak tomatoes today. I put seeds for 8 marigolds in today, also. I seed in fours and multiples of four.

What's up right now:
3 Peter Peppers
1 Dorsett Naga
1 Carolina Reaper
7 Jalapenos
1 Tampiqueno Serrano
3 Devil Serranos
1 Mini-Belle
4 OR Spring
3 Pepperoncini
2 Beefsteak tomatoes
1 Pear tomato
1 Abraham Lincoln that I accidentally broke Wednesday and I didn't think it would live because it wilted all the way over, but it recovered from two breaks in the stem and is standing back up with an S-curve. As long as it's willing to try, I'll leave it alone.
Secondary leaves are starting to set as well.

Next week, I'm going to start my sweet peas.

Oh, and it's almost time to cut my potatoes and let them get green. If I finish sorting my dirt next weekend, they can go in the ground as soon as they're ready. The garlic I didn't harvest last fall is doing really well. Seeds.. look like they're trying, but it's still a bit early and cold yet. I'll check the weather to see if it's feasible to put in the onion sets and plant the carrots and radishes. Might still be too early. Zone 6 can be unpredictable this time of year.

i can't find my garlic right now. i know i had planted 15 cloves, and 10 had come up...but we had once again, SNOW, and wet snow at that, so everything is buried again.....

so glad i'm only going to plant ONE tomato plant, ONE eggplant, and ONE basil plant this years, and a lot of flowers...if winter goes into September here, i'd not have any harvest of the $100 or so of the veggies i plant yearly...flowers will grow, no matter the temps.

Yeah.

Drill a wide hole as deep as you can in the center. Then drill horizontally at ground level until it meets the vertical hole.

Let it dry out for a year, then start a fire in that hole with oil or something.

I've got some 1 1/2" sheet insulation left over from the metal roof-over.
I'm thinking of slapping up an 8x12 grow room in the basement to get some seeds started in a couple of months.
I think we had something like 250 - 300 tomato starts last year and obviously we gave most of them away.

I'm going to try some sub-artic tomatoes this year from Baker Creek.
Here's a link to their catalog.

Not one "mention" of Randy Lemmon of Garden Line on KTRH...

Okay @Blood that said...I do admit from my days of running LAREDO that Houston Am Signal was "strongest" English Speaking on the Mexico Border so I know alot more about Gardening in Gulf Coast Texas than I do at home here in the Midwest

This thread reminded me that I am supposed to look into a community gardening plot. I picked up my phone a couple times but I forgot what I was supposed to look up at Google:foreheadslap:
