2017 gardening thread.

ok so this morning i went to that little Italian market and got 4 heads of garlic. i paid just under $5.00 as the price was $5.99 a pound.

in this first pic, you can see all 4 heads and some sprouts, in the 2 in the back

a closer look at the sprouts

now here are the few especially bigger cloves that have sprouted this far, so the bigger ones, will most likely be planted before T-DAY,

and here is the remainder of the cloves. they will ALL be put into the fridge till a few more grow sprouts, then again, only the biggest will be planted. all the rest (small sprouts) and non sprouting ones will just be in another meal at one time or another.

when you keep any amount of garlic in the fridge, and you have a constant cool temp, that gets the garlic to start sprouting. if nothing sprouts, then it was either a hybrid or chemically treated to negate any sprouting. doesn't mean that what you bought is no good to eat, it just means it will not (in most if not all instances) grow when planted.

garlic being a a "bulb" type of plant, grows for a while during the cold weather when you plant them, much like your tulips, etc, will grow, then it will winter down, and pop up again in the spring. you can plant garlic in the spring, but sometimes they just grow better when planted in the fall as late as T-day weekend, as long as there isn't any snow or frost preventing you from planting.

So I got four heads of garlic today. Should I break the cloves off and put them into a bowl and place them in the fridge? Or leave the garlic whole and place them in the fridge?

Here’s what I got.

I got two heads of each. I’m thinking about getting more purple tomorrow.

What machine or gadget do I need to buy or make in order to accomplish this in a reasonable amount of time?

I looked up "garlic press" but it looks like they just turn it into a smashed up mess. I want tiny cubes.

Food processor maybe? I would think that should do it just pulse it until you get it the way you want it.

break them apart, do not remove the fragile wrapper around the cloves, but it could fall off anyways. put them in a bowl, in the fridge for a few days and then check and see if any sprout shoots. if no shoots, leave them in the fridge for another week. i'd say that by the 4th week no shoots? they very well may not grow.

i have never planted garlic seeds, but do as directed for planting.

Awesome thank you!

I put up a couple of jars of stewed tomatoes yesterday and dehydrated the cayennes and the rest of the Thai chilis.

Still have some nagas ripening in a bag and an apple box full of tomatoes ripening.

I want to grind up the nagas and make paste out of them. I have little tiny jars for that. That stuff is going to be absolutely brutal.

the first time i did horseradish I ground it in the kitchen, BIG, NO HUGE MISTAKE!!!!
it was fine for about 15 seconds but after that I couldn't see, couldn't breath went thru the back door and was rolling around in agony, the wife got the hose out and about drowned me was even thinking about calling an ambulance.
that was a HARD lesson that will never be forgotten!!!!!
for anyone ne to doing horesradsh don't EVER, NEVER, AND I MEAN DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT grinding it indoors, no way no how, it is something you will regret that is if you survive!!!!
I had to go back through the thread to find the story. I knew it was funny.:biglaugh:

That looks like one of those things they found hanging in the trees in The Blair Witch Project... which was filmed in your neck o' the woods.

I think you've got some explaining to do, mister!

I was actually out that way a couple weeks ago. Me and Sandy went to the Antietam battle fields in Sharpsburg. Maybe I unknowingly brought something back? :eek-64:

Here’s my horseradish harvest.

I cut the tops and replanted them. Let’s see what happens through the winter.

I'm going to wait for a frost this year to see if it makes a difference.

So you just cut the tops off & planted them like starts?
I've never done that so let me know how it works.
I always plants small cuttings from the roots and plant them shallow which seems to be working well so far.

How deep do the roots go? I want to be sure the container is adequate.

I planted mine in the spring and the biggest root I had went about 6-7” and then some off shoots that went out side ways at about three or four inches below the soil and some extended 6-7” out from the main root. I would say my roots combined wouldn’t have needed more than a 14” diameter by 14” deep pot. That’s being generous.

I planted the same style cut that you sent me. I cut the tops off except about an inch. Then I cut the root about an inch from the bottom of the green top. So I had about two inches total. (A running theme in my life :biggrin-2:) Half root/ half top. I planted that. I’d like to get a bigger root next year. (Another running theme in my.........nevermind :biggrin-2:) That’s why I want to try planting now. I only really had one good thick root with any length to it so I’ll give this a shot and see what happens.

Crowns, that’s what I was trying to say and couldn’t think of when I was posting. Not tops. Crowns! I didn’t mean to confuse ya.

I posted that Sunday at 2:43 knowing I was not using the right term and I thought of crowns at about 5pm today on my ride home. Not good but I’ll take it. Alzheimer’s runs in my family so sometimes I freak out about getting early onset.

What were we talking about?
Oh garlic. It’s in fridge waiting to crown. :biggrin-2:
