ok so this morning i went to that little Italian market and got 4 heads of garlic. i paid just under $5.00 as the price was $5.99 a pound.
in this first pic, you can see all 4 heads and some sprouts, in the 2 in the back
a closer look at the sprouts
now here are the few especially bigger cloves that have sprouted this far, so the bigger ones, will most likely be planted before T-DAY,
and here is the remainder of the cloves. they will ALL be put into the fridge till a few more grow sprouts, then again, only the biggest will be planted. all the rest (small sprouts) and non sprouting ones will just be in another meal at one time or another.
when you keep any amount of garlic in the fridge, and you have a constant cool temp, that gets the garlic to start sprouting. if nothing sprouts, then it was either a hybrid or chemically treated to negate any sprouting. doesn't mean that what you bought is no good to eat, it just means it will not (in most if not all instances) grow when planted.
garlic being a a "bulb" type of plant, grows for a while during the cold weather when you plant them, much like your tulips, etc, will grow, then it will winter down, and pop up again in the spring. you can plant garlic in the spring, but sometimes they just grow better when planted in the fall as late as T-day weekend, as long as there isn't any snow or frost preventing you from planting.
