2017 gardening thread.

@Duck 's garlic is taking off in the growbed with the cooler weather.
Farmers Almanac says to plant 6 - 8 weeks before first hard frost so now is close to the right time.
I was thinking I read that it should be planted in fall but kept forgetting to look it up.

I just pulled mine. Should I separate the seeds I picked three weeks ago and plant them, or just pull a head apart and go with cloves?

The flavor on that garlic is amazing.

I've been wanting to do garlic for a couple years now. I've heard if you grow it yourself you'll never want to buy it from thee store again. It seems like it's a lot to it though. Same with carrots. I did a carrot bed a few years ago and the flavor is amazing over Store bought. Rabbits got it all this year.

A local ol'phart gave my guy some horseradish starts in July. He forgot about them and left them in the black bedliner of the pickup for three days. When he remembered them, he gave them to me and I checked them out. All but one rhizome were completely dried out. There was the tiniest lump of live root inside that one. Figured I'd give it a chance, so I put it in a whiskey barrel to see what it'd do. The whiskey barrel is completely full of leaves now. Not sure if I want to harvest any this year, but I think it will have to be transplanted next spring.
Will it be okay over the winter in the whiskey barrel? Zone 6.

I'm over wintering mine to see what happens. I have mine in a raised bed so spreading too much shouldn't be a problem. You should be ok leaving them in the barrel injun. They're hardy plants.

Busy weekend.
I pulled the garden and canned the jalapenos. There were only six jalapeno plants. I already gave one jar away, plus took about five pounds of peppers to work. Six plants.

I can't wait to open up the red jar. That one's going to be good..

I meant to take a pic a couple weeks ago and update the horseradish growth. It did pretty good! I gotta get in there and do some weeding but I was busy today picking the rest of my limas and I ripped out the tomato plants.
It will be interesting to see what happens next year after it overwinters.
As I was working in the garden today I was thinking...... how cool it is to exchange seeds or roots or plants with friends and neighbors and it kind of intertwines the two families.
I guess you could say the blood and 348 families are a bit intertwined huh @Blood?

My garlic turned out so crappy I didn't even bother with it. I posted a picture of the yield. Didn't re-plant. Pissed off because of how many times I watered it and scared rabbits away from it. All for barely enough for a single bowl of popcorn.

If I ever plant garlic again I'll try growing it in dirt instead of wood chips.

They say it's best after a hard frost but I don't think I've ever waited that long.
I've done some around this time of year and some in late sporing which were both good.
It seems to grow better if you harvest the root a couple of times per year.

They also say they roots get gritty n grainy if you don't harvest it.

We've got an Omega masticating [there you go prinks, have fun!! :biggrin-2:] juicer which does an excellent job of processing the root but it'd be real pricey just for making horseradish. Around $300 as I remember.
:eek-64:

So to harvest some I need to just take a blade down through the center of the plant and pull half and leave the other half in the ground?

You have time to answer I gotta go look up masticating.
