When did they switch Idaho and Montana?
I'm always the last to know about these things!

:thefinger:

I was back-tracking to throw off the damn commies!

It's man stuff...
don't worry your purty little head about it...
grab us another round while we figgur it out...
and bake some damn cookies or something!

I transplanted this tomato vertically in one of the (expanded shale) grow beds.
There's about a foot of the trunk below grade.
Tomatoes & peppers can be planted deep or vertically, the stalks will root for a healthier plant.
This one is a Mortgage Lifter.
So far the mortgage lifters are out-gunning beefsteaks, super beefsteaks, rutgers, romas and a couple of others that I can't recall right now.

The mortgage lifters are the two rows on the left in the second pic.

I want to try something different with some of the taters this year: 55 gallon drum, few holes drilled at the bottom, about 4" of coarse rock and a foot of dirt. Plant three or four in it and wait until the plants are about a foot tall, then add 8" of soil so there's about 4" of plant sticking up. Wait until the plants are about a foot high and do it again, repeat until the dirt is about 4" from the top of the barrel and then grow as normal. At the end of the season, dump the drum over onto a tarp and pick your spuds out of it.
I have heard of doing that but instead of filling it up with soil use sawdust instead

I've got garlic growing in wood chips.

It's a low spot in the tears where there was a tree or something about 500 years ago. They heaped wood chips up when they ground down a tree stump near it last summer so I used some of them to level that low spot..

All I did was push some seeds in the wood chips last fall and it's growing now.

A rabbit dug one of them up but elected not to eat it for some reason. That's how know it's the garlic growing and just just weeds.

So,
pimp-hand came over today and helped us out with some spring cleaning and a few more wicking tire planters.
Good kid!
I mentioned yesterday that I could use a hand but I didn't expect him to show up.
When I offered to pay him he said that he was just trying to repay me for letting him use our Jeep to get work.
"But I could use, like, 5 or 10 bucks if you're feeling generous."
:D

I didn't realize what sorry shape I'm in until I tried to keep a 19 year-old from out-gunning me.
I told him my back was giving me a fit when we were wheelbarrowing dirt into the planters (while I was praying for a deep breath!).
;)

The little prink gives my wife a fit!

Drop the hose, Robbie!
(He was watering the planters)

Mind your own business granny, I'll never drop my ho's!
I love ho's...
Garden ho's!
Weed ho's!
Ho pun's...
Ho puns is an Asian chick I met on the internet!
Do you want to hear more, or are we done here?

[Sigh]
We're done.

Are you sure?
Because I could talk all day about Ho Puns!

WE'RE DONE!

Ok then.

:p

Who's ****ing brainchild was it to bring ****ing Morning glory over here? That **** is insidious.
I heard a rumor that the feds will destroy your house, flash bomb your children's cribs shoot your dogs and put you in gitmo for 4000 years if there are morning glories on your property.

Because allegedly teenagers were making some kind of illegal tea from the leaves.

one stinking year my sister planted morning glory seeds.

now every year without fail, i get seedlings popping up all over the damned place, even on the front sidewalk.....

So, I got curious about what other people have done for soil sifters. Looks like most of them made a box that fits over the wheelbarrow and has to be moved every time you need to dump the sifted soil.

Building A Soil Sifter Screen To Remove Rocks, Stones, and Chunks From Dirt And Compost

I guess nobody ever thought to make one you can just run the wheelbarrow under it and only move it when you need to.

I'm almost halfway done. It's going faster, now, because I can backfill from the "good soil" side. After that's all done, I'll rake it flat, add some well aged chicken poop and a fair amount of peat moss, then fill with more top soil as needed to make a raised bed.

i just use a square piece (about 20" x 20" ) of mesh wire screen , over a 5 gallon bucket.

You need to start a thread called "Injun Pond Rez-neckery"
