2017 gardening thread.

i am now starting to buy 50 pound bags of composted manure..

got 2 now, gonna buy 2 more later today, on sale....last day.....somehow, i don't see a last minute run from others to have an empty pallet, when i get there.

plus, all the rain we are having, must be keeping people from NOT thinking about gardens.....

Looks like you got a professional to do it?

Heh.. It's two old sawhorses and some 1/4" hogwire. Not a very professional job. It's hard work, but it'll be worth it and I'll get to see something I did. I feel like I should have another wheelbarrow, though. I'm sieving into the wheelbarrow and throwing the rocks into a couple of buckets, then dumping the dirt, pouring the rocks into the wheelbarrow and pushing them to the driveway. Got two of the biggest mudholes filled in already.

The composition of that soil is 2/3 dirt, 1/3 rock.

It'll be nice to have carrots shaped like carrots instead of corkscrews.

i checked the pH level of my soil, it is in the "ideal" range.

i got (today), 2 more bags of cow manure, bringing me to 4 total.

this year, i will not lime, nor use sphagnum peat moss.

my "prefered" fertilizer is a timed released type, of 10-10-10

and then a weekly dousing of Miracle Grow.

but the fertilizing (using Miracle Grow) will be dependant on rain fall this summer.

last year, we had hardly any rain, so more heavier waterings and Miracle Grow took place.

tomorrow's weather will be MORE rain, and we are at flood levels now....but my yard is elevated so it drains quite well.

this is an old pic, of when i tore up my yard. see the top row of lumber..?? that's about the level of the soil, the water goes down to the ground level for drainage.

this is an overhead shot. the actual planting area i have is 15' x 15', as the tree's take 2' around that L shape. (it's an old pic as well)

and this was my jungle, one planting season...

:biglaugh:My area used to be all Italian. Don't ever leave your hockey sticks on the street because the next thing you know the blade has been cut off and they are holding up a tomato plant:D
But you got a nice garden going on there:thumbsup:

I was told carrots are hard to grow?
Plant the seeds, thin them when they come up and then wait. They're ready when you see the tops of the roots coming out of the ground a little and they're 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter, depending on variety.

I got some big carrots last year. Very sweet, too.

But shaped like fucking corkscrews!

I dunno whether I ever mentioned that we grow marigolds in a lot of our beds.
They repel pests but don't deter pollinators.
Not bad...
for a gurl!

Awesome looking garden!
You da man!
My wife would probably murder me to have a neat space like yours!

I'd pay your gasoline to get you to take a road trip up to see Paul Gautschi!
From your post in the 'fat, sick & nearly dead' thread, I'd bet my your life that your allergies are from herbicides and pesticides rather than from actual food.

Paul is a Vietnam combat vet whose compatriots are all dead or in wheelchairs due to agent orange exposure.
He is NOT a fan of Monsanto or the herbicides that are the grandchildren of orange.
He used to respond by letter to every person that wrote him but I doubt that he can manage it anymore since he's an internet star. He still doesn't own a computer though.
I believe the youtube channel is L2survive...
double-dog dare!

Sequim (pronounced Skwim, the e is silent) is way over on the other side of Washington on the Olympic Penninsula.

He sounds like a lovely chap.

I want to try something different with some of the taters this year: 55 gallon drum, few holes drilled at the bottom, about 4" of coarse rock and a foot of dirt. Plant three or four in it and wait until the plants are about a foot tall, then add 8" of soil so there's about 4" of plant sticking up. Wait until the plants are about a foot high and do it again, repeat until the dirt is about 4" from the top of the barrel and then grow as normal. At the end of the season, dump the drum over onto a tarp and pick your spuds out of it.

So,
pimp-hand came over today and helped us out with some spring cleaning and a few more wicking tire planters.
Good kid!
I mentioned yesterday that I could use a hand but I didn't expect him to show up.
When I offered to pay him he said that he was just trying to repay me for letting him use our Jeep to get work.
"But I could use, like, 5 or 10 bucks if you're feeling generous."
:D

I didn't realize what sorry shape I'm in until I tried to keep a 19 year-old from out-gunning me.
I told him my back was giving me a fit when we were wheelbarrowing dirt into the planters (while I was praying for a deep breath!).
;)

The little prink gives my wife a fit!

Drop the hose, Robbie!
(He was watering the planters)

Mind your own business granny, I'll never drop my ho's!
I love ho's...
Garden ho's!
Weed ho's!
Ho pun's...
Ho puns is an Asian chick I met on the internet!
Do you want to hear more, or are we done here?

[Sigh]
We're done.

Are you sure?
Because I could talk all day about Ho Puns!

WE'RE DONE!

Ok then.

:p

It's about 400 travel miles one way with two mountain ranges in between. We have big states over here.

Yeah,
well...
We have to cross Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana to get to the state line, so....
I feel your pain.
