2012 Peterbilt light wiring NIGHTMARE!!!!!

I have a 2012 Peterbilt 388 with a ISX 11.9. When you open the door the tail lights light up real dim, shut the door and the lights go out. If I turn on the key and shut the door, the lights stay on. Did some testing and found out its the turn signal wires that are getting power. They have 8 1/2 volts when the key is on or when the door is open. They have 2 volts at all times. I unplug the hazard switch and my 2 volts disappear, open the door and it has 6 volts to the turn signals. If I pull the fuse for dome lights and the dash display, which both come on when I open the door, my taillights still have power going to them. Any ideas or pointers on which direction I should head, I would be eternally grateful, if not I guess I will dig a hole with the backhoe and drive the truck in it, because this truck is giving me literal chest pains.

when i had a lighting problem the mechanics found a body control module to be bad. can't say how much those cost. maybe a junk yard..???? (for the module, not the truck)

you getting any codes..?????

I do not have any codes. I've found and fixed a bad wire at the tail lights, one of the jumper harnesses for the one taillight, a corroded connector under the truck (the chassis connector for the trailer light wires), and a bare wire at the pass through for the cab/chassis connector. I'm loosing my mind with this truck, I'm at the start of day 4 messing with it.

i have had a license plate light muck me up as well....

you never mentioned if this happens with a trailer hooked up. i have had the pig tail and or the electrical box cause problems.

i suppose you already started at the rear and worked your way forward. did you (by chance) use dielectric grease to coat the connections after the repairs?

i have even had the wiring harness at the hood hinge create problems. just too many things to look at.

Well the whole reason we began to look it was because the ABS light on the trailer was on, but when I unplugg the trailer the problem doesn't go away. I've unplugged the trailer harness at the chassis connector on the frame and I still have the problem.

check all the grounds. something may be back feeding, then going to ground. try checking all the battery negative terminals first. then check any body ground cables. all connections may have to be cleaned.

If your pigtail connector is the cheap $2 kind with the contacts all sticking out the back, rather than the highly expensive $7 one where you shove the wire into the contact before screwing it down and all the contacts are embedded, you might be having issues right there.

Had one of those cheap POS's start my truck on fire. The center blue contact is always live, to an extent, and if anything is at all loose in those cheap pigtail ends, it can send power to the wrong place and do all kinds of weird stuff.

I've checked grounds, and power cables and have been working my way from the firewall down. I've got to the body control module and that seems to be okay, from what i can tell, so now I'm going to start tracing wires from there out. Hopefully that will lead somewhere.
