Truck Driver Overweight / Health Stats

...we're all going to die at age 61 because we're truck drivers.

I guess I better get busy livin' happy. Only 16⅓ years left...

Hmmm . . . . . you look much younger than that. Must be all that clean livin'. Give up the smokes and you'll get a few more happy years!

I'm not disagreeing that a lot of drivers are overweight, you missed my point. Dont you ever find it odd that truck drivers are all ways the focal point of some study?
Weight study.
Sleep study.
Effects of sleeping in a idling truck study.
Effects of being gone from home study.
HOS study.
10hours driving vs 11 hours study.
on and on and on.

Whens the last time you heard of a study of Undertakers and the effects on them dressing dead people every day? Never.
How bout that study of a auto mechanics having to work on Fords but prefers Chevrolet? Never.
Theres NO GRANT money in them kinds of study's.

And as Injun pointed out these numbers they use are false. Ask around, when was the last time you were asked to be studied for something job related to trucking and you health.
Where are these studys taking place at? Truck stops? Is someone weighing drivers as they waddle through the door?

If some bozo started asking me questions at a truck stop about some study they were conducing my first reply is going to be "Sorry I'm not a truck driver, I'm a rocket mechanic" and walk away, why? Because all these so called studys lead to one thing more useless rules and regulations.
A person as a individual controls there own destiny in life. No one is ever going to live for ever. I choose to drive truck for a number of reasons of my own free will. I dont need some asshat with a Bachelor's degree trying to tell me how I should be living my life.
If I die dead today I did because my number was up....not because I smoke or drink or drive a truck or stay up late at night driving a truck.
A person should realize there only trying to prolong the inevitable by living the so called "healthier lifestyle". And for what? So they can be 90 and have uncontrollable bowel movements while spending there "golden years" in a nursing home?
No thanks!
I rather die happy, fat, drunk with a cigarette.

@Tim

All industries are studied, don't think truckers are really picked on here. We here about all of it because its where we happen to be.

As Mike points out, trucking is not the only industry that gets "studied". There are literally tens of thousands of studies being done all the time. They study every profession, every activity, they even spend millions of dollars to study the mating habits of animals and insects, like it actually means something.

Don't believe me?

Google it.

Seriously.

Don't flatter yourselves by thinking we are so special that we are the ones who get studied more than anyone or anything else.

And sometimes I wonder how any of you can have a weight or health problem. You sure get enough exercise jumping to conclusions, taking cheap shots and arguing with each other. That has to burn a few calories, doesn't it?

Here, I save the lazy ones among you some work and found links to some studies.

Studies show that approximately 73 percent of drivers are overweight and more than 50 percent are obese. Source, Overdrive Magazine Article written in 2007.

We also know that 54 percent of commercial drivers smoke cigarettes and only 8 percent exercise. Among the general adult population, only 21 percent smoke, and 49 percent exercise regularly. Source, Article Written by USDOT.

There has been some talk on The Truckers Forum recently about Medical requirements concerning what a Driver may or may not be tested for concerning them receiving their Medical Card. IMHO, I think that as Drivers, we are only a breath away from the "Weight Issue" becoming a determining factor for maintaining a CDL. Many companies are already requesting the "Sleep Apnea" test, if THEIR Doctor feels you meet the requirements.

While this may not effect O/O or drivers that can choose who THEY go to to get their DOT Physical, again, I only think it will be a matter of time before this will become a "Standard Issue" through the FMCSA. This has been an "eye opener" for me as I would no doubt fit into that category. So, how can I choose to remove myself from the "List"?

I have started with simple steps. I will not call this a diet, rather, a change in my eating habits. I now eat off of a smaller plate, instead of a dinner plate to reduce my portion intake. I may have to switch to paper plates as they would be much easier to digest cause I am still hungry when I finish my meals now. :) I have removed all fried foods, from my list of foods. I have incorporated eating first thing in the morning to jump start my body's fat burning process. Even being over weight, I still only ate twice a day. Noon and evening.

I have cut my alcohol intake 100%. I have switched to wheat bread instead of white bread, added 90% of each meal with fruits and vegetables and am eating a lot more broiled fish and seafood with just lemon juice. Now I either boil, broil or bake chicken after I removed the skin. I have switched from eating a large baked potato with 1/2 a stick of butter covered with 1/2 a quart of sour cream, with a baked sweet potato, sometimes even two, depending on their size.

The point I am trying to make is, for me, I need to change my eating habits as well as some of the things I eat. I have found that it only takes a few days of cutting something out, to find a good replacement for that item. I now try and exercise twice a day, if nothing more then walking for 20 min at a time. I can do this at home as well as around a truck stop. I have removed salt and replaced it with Mrs Dash. I use a lot more spices to enhance my food then I did before.

I have increased my intake of just plain old water. Sometimes I drink close to a gallon a day. So, I started this 6 days ago. I have lost close to 10 pounds and I can already feel a difference. My starting weight was 298 pounds and I stand 6'1".

I am starting this thread as a clone of "Driver, What's Your 20". Each week I will list my results here to show what progress I have made, if any, as well as give encouragement to others that may be wanting to achieve the same results. Drive Safe!

I know the video is long and I can't post links from my phone but look up "sugar: the bitter truth" on you tube, it is extremely interesting.

I am glad Mike reopened this thread. I am not into the "studies" done by doctors or guberment groups. I am however, "Sick and tired of being sick and tired."

Injun; you stated you were around the 145 lbs. mark. I have never seen you and don't know anything about you but on some women that weight makes them look like an Amazon Goddess and from some of your comments I have read that is possibly how I picture you.

If, by reporting my progress, this helps to motivate somebody else to change their lifestyle, then I am glad to have been a small factor in that decision.

Trkingpro, my profile pic is really me. I'm soft around the middle with about a 1½ inch thick pad of fat on the front of my tummy that I have been cursed with since the age of 6. I have had my weight all the way down to 115 and still had that pillow. I felt cold and weak at that weight. Liposuction will wind up being the answer to that lifelong war. I don't look my weight because I'm quite muscular for a woman. Most people think I weigh 10 to 15 pounds less than I do. I maintain that with isometrics and walking.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

Injun is not tall enough to be an Amazon. Goddess maybe, but Amazon, no.

I've seen that, and there was a story on NPR a while back about some guy who wrote a book about sugar. Supposedly sugar is addictive, like heroin. It can actually change how we behave.

Soda and food producers know this (they have done studies Tim) and put more sugar into more food and beverage items than is necessary. Even things you wouldn't think have or need sugar have it in them, like bread.
