Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) vs Automatic Tire Inflation Systems (ATIS)

I'm really disappointed to learn that the Halo system does not control high pressure in the tires, as that was one of the big benefits that I thought it had. Guess it helps to read up on these things, rather than listen to people talk about them.
 
Another option to decide on is whether to use a system that uses and app on your smartphone,or get one with it's own monitor. I can see advantages and disadvantages to both.

Do these things only work one way or will they lower the pressure too?

I mean on a regular wheel you get up before dawn in the summer, it's like 56 degrees out. You check your tires the old fashioned way, make sure they're at 95 or 110 or whatever your preference is, then you hit the road and at noon it's 90 degrees outside, the pavement is hot enough to cook eggs on, and you're rolling along at 70 mph making even more heat.

What's your tire pressure going to rise to?

How about an inflation system that lets air out of your tires to maintain your preset pressure, then adds more when you park and they cool down. Does such a thing exist?

That is what I heard the Halo system did, then I learned through @mndriver after he talked to the company that they don't.

If I am going to have an inflation system, I want it to fully regulate. If not, a monitoring system will be fine for me.
 
When I talked with sales yesterday, this was brought up in does it adjust the pressure down as well.

No it doesn’t.

However....

What she learned in a 4 year study in the spring for locations around Toronto /Detroit is that the system only gained on average 9*F.

I know in the fall, I’ve checked my tires and been as low as 15# when the temps have dropped.

The halo system has a Bluetooth system that communicates with the mechanical pumps you install on each wheel end and keeps the pressures up. The only way it functions though is with centrifugal force.

That’s where the hitch comes in.

Engineers don’t want to put in a relief valve in without some way of being able to add air pressure as well. With no rotation, no increase capability.

There’s more information on what the Bluetooth system provides, I’m just waiting for the email from Halo to provide it since it goes into the cost of the subscription services for “Halo Connect”
 
I used a app based TPMS in 2019
I used it all year.It would send me alerts when air pressure got too high or low
it kept a eye on tire temps too
I spend around 450.00 on tires that year with no blowouts
well worth it in my opinion
of course I had a new set of tires in my building.That helped and thats what I soent the 450 on ,tire man came out and changed a lot of tires for me

I have a blue ink tech eld and I used their TPMS then but they are working on another better one they say
I cancelled my subscription,it was 30 a month,and as far as I am concerned,they are worth it.I`ll probally renew my subscription in Jan of 2021
 
I thought the cool tire pressure was just that because they're expected to heat up and raise the pressure. If it lets pressure out to be 110 when it's hot, wouldn't they then be under inflated?

No, if the target pressure is 110, they become overinflated.

I was hoping for something that would maintain a constant pressure, adjusting for cold inflation and hot inflation.

In a perfect world, I would like a system that you could dial in a temperature based on actual load.

We inflate drive tires to 90,100,110, based on preference, when the actual recommended pressure for most loads are probably closer to 75-80.

This is why they don't remove air. 110psi is what you want in your steers when they're "cold" not hot. Or 90 or whatever in your drives when cold. Not hot. If they're rolling and get dropped to 90 by a tire management system, they're gonna blow out from the heat.
 
What would be awesome and maybe this is what you mean, is a system that would automatically adjust while it's sitting there being loaded or unloaded.
That would be nice. I would be happy though with simply being able to go to each wheel and dial in a specific pressure.
 
No, being able to adjust from 75 to 110 based on load. I would obviously have all the tires set to the same weight, lol.
Ah. So basically you just wanna set your drives and trailers based on how much load they're seeing. Like I suggested except manually but not get dirty manually...push a button manually.
 
To take this even further, tire psi regulated according to air bag pressure certainly is not out of the question.
Kinda what I was getting at. Sitting at a shipper/receiver, airbags sense the addition or removal and adjust accordingly.

Probably would want a way to lock it out until the process is complete though or it'd constantly be changing as the forklift goes in and out or what have you.

I’m pretty sure the tire manufacturers have taken pressure rise into account when they set a recommended pressure
