The Long and Winding Road...

So... I get this call from one of the office types a week ago Friday night.

Office nerd: Watcha doing this weekend?

Me: Nothin' planned, but I got a delivery in Joplin tomorrow morning. (Mispoke on that...)

Office nerd: Wanna make some money?

Well, frickin' aye, I want to make some money, dumbass! If I'd thought about it more, I'd have turned it down, but... one of the guys bit on one of the ridiculous load offers,, MO to TX for 5 large, talks him up to 6. Whoa!

Only one problem, he's already picking up another load in Joplin. (Pesky details ya know!)

So this is a real deal if we can cover Joplin to West Memphis on Saturday evening. That's where I came in. First I guestimated 350-ish miles one way... and then there's my load, but I'm thinking I can deliver in the AM, and pickup easily that night since its all happening at one place. Turns out, its 389 mi actually via Ft Smith. Second, I was remembering wrong about my load... its actually a Sunday night 1800 delivery. But I've already committed, and the other guy is already off to the races.

Well crap!

Talked to the office nerd on the way from Chicago, and yeah one of the better trailers is empty at the drop yard... so its still doable, kinda maybe. Fill up my reefer tank, drop my loaded trailer at the yard in Springfield, and haul ass down to Joplin before Ms Elogs gives me the shaft. Grab a washout, and a nap.

Go over to the shipper. It's not quite that simple... this normally quick to load shipper is AFU... product isn't ready. So instead of being loaded at 2200 plus an hour or so, I'm getting out of the dock around 0300, and I need to be in West Memphis at 1000.

So I haul ass down to Ft Smith, hang a left, and haul ass over to West Memphis. 10 minutes late. Its Sunday, and apparently the receiver is in a forgiving mood, so I get unloaded pretty quick. Gone a little after 1300.

So it's a bit shorter drive via Jonesboro and West Plains, but there's grades and windey 2-lanes that way. It also is a straight shot to our drop yard on US60 coming into Springfield. So forgetting that there's no sech thang as a shortcut in Ar-Kansas... I'm off!

Except north of I40 its raining like a biotch! GRR!

And its Sunday in th' backwoods... th' hicks are out "Sunday Driving! GRR!

So I know I'm getting behind, but things look up in MO. It quit raining, and it didn't get cold enough to ice up the roads! Caught a break... finally. Or maybe it was just Murphy found some other rube to go torture. Still bending the throttle, but US60 in MO is a 70 mph road.

Get to the drop yard just before 1800, swap trailers, and git going but its after 1830 now. Late dagnabbit! So I come dragging in about 1940, but these guys are cool. Got unloaded right away, whew!

So that's my weekend, warp 7 adventure. Got the load revenue, and a $700 fee from the other guy, so it was profitable as well. Don't y'all worry about the other guy's wallet... he talked his broker up another $350 over the 6 large, so he did exceedingly well.

Ms Elogs was POd... fuck that biotch!
