There's a bunch of mega trailers around, and I figure Prime owes me! But no...

So I get things squared away, and wouldn't ya know it's one of those effed up handles that don't work right?

How many staples did you need to close up your scalp? So I'm hooking onto *my* personal 53' reefer trailer tonight, and the landing gear is being its usual stiff self. So, as usual, I crank it a dozen turns or so in low gear to get it going.
Pull it out to crank it up in high, and...
Sonuvabitch!
Zero... fer once. But, yeah. The propensity to mutilate one's self is usually proportionate to the stupidity of the situation. How many staples did you need to close up your scalp?
I needed 7 when it happened to me. Crossover pipe snapped.
How old of trailer? Only times I've ever seen one break was on old wagons, where the salt finally corroded through from the inside out after years of pooling while in the stored position. So I'm hooking onto *my* personal 53' reefer trailer tonight, and the landing gear is being its usual stiff self. The ******* handle breaks right at the 90° bend!
You gotta be kidding me! Saturday evening, about 1630, and the ****ing thing decides it's time for Hari Kari.
So... I don't even bother with wondering if Utility Trailer is still open. Its Saturday fer Gawds sake! I'm considering larceny! There's a bunch of mega trailers around, and I figure Prime owes me! But no...
Criminality just ain't my bag. I'd get caught, so it's across town to our drop yard, and acquisition through "borrowing" off a trailer I'm sure has a bunch of deferred maintenance, and ain't going anywhere soon.
Of course the bolt on my trailer is totally fused to the frickin' nut.
Good thing I got a small hacksaw. So I get things squared away, and wouldn't ya know it's one of those effed up handles that don't work right?
Hooked up, going down th' road... ain't cost me anything - yet, and it didn't happen in Timbuktu. I suppose there is something to be grateful for in this, but I'll be damned if I know what that might be!

2012... probably doesn't have the miles most do. Got a bit of insight on its probable history. How old of trailer? Only times I've ever seen one break was on old wagons, where the salt finally corroded through from the inside out after years of pooling while in the stored position.
Mine was a low drop in the mud. I was pissed off and got tired of cranking it in low range so I put it in high range and put brute force into it and it snapped the crossover pipe. I'd have figured the 1/4-20 bolt would have snapped first but the pipe tore there instead right where the holes for the aforementioned bolt were at the end .Zero... fer once. But, yeah. How damn short are you that the handle can smack you on top of the head?Mine was a low drop in the mud. With the right side able to freewheel, I now had all the weight of the trailer on just the left dolly leg, and with twice the resistance on the handle and it spun around and bashed the top of my head.
It was just a superficial scalp laceration but it bled a lot. Everyone was wide eyed when I went in to get the bills. In the bathroom mirror I looked like something from a movie.
Ended up driving about 70 miles til word got back to dispatch and they ordered me to stop and take a cab to the ER to rule out concussion. Shipper chick called them.

When you replace it proper, drill a 3/32" hole in the bottom of the bend when it's stowed. The ******* handle breaks right at the 90° bend!
Why do we stow the handle anyway? Just OCD?When you replace it proper, drill a 3/32" hole in the bottom of the bend when it's stowed.
It will allow the water to drain and won't rust from the inside out.

Because The Man says the handle has to be stowed! Why do we stow the handle anyway? Just OCD?
I've seen some guys leave them sticking out horizontal in the cranking position with the gears engaged.Because The Man says the handle has to be stowed!
If I had to guess, I'm assuming the earlier versions weren't worm gears and would actually unwind by themselves.
