RIP, Girly Truck

Only saw your Post now...A cold shiver went down my Spine as I read it...delighted you came out alive and unhurt...God only knows what was going through the other Drivers mind...

About 2 years ago an Irish Couple and their young Daughter and unborn Baby were in England on Holiday...on the last Day as they were heading for the Boat to go Home, on a straight stretch of Road an on-coming car drove straight at them at high speed...Eye witnesses said the car Accelerated into the Path of the Couples car and purposely crashed into them...The Daughter and the unborn Baby were killed instantly...the Husband and Wife were seriously injured and spent Months in Hospital...eventually after both recovered enough they were transferred back to a Hospital nearer to their home in Ireland but sadly last year while still in Hospital the Husband had a relapse and died...his Wife Thankfully went on to recover...

Today she spends her time Travelling England and Ireland speaking at different Venues on Suicides and the devastation it leaves behind...both the English and Irish Police Forces support her efforts...at the Inquest it was stated that the Offending car was a London Black Taxi Cab { NY has the Yellow Cabs} being driven by a Taxi Driver who was suffering deep Depression after Family problems...

We never know the time or the place...no matter how Safe and careful a Driver you are...you have no say or control over what other Drivers are thinking............................Stay safe out there and "Never Drive faster that your Guardian Angel can Fly"

My route took me through the crash site today. I stopped and walked it. Found my steering arm. It snapped off where it goes into the gear box. Explains why I had no steering. Found the trumpet part of my air horn, the steel belts from my tires, a lot of fiberglass debris...and I have absolutely no idea how that truck didn't roll.

It should have.

The drunk guy's family made a memorial for him.
I felt like popping their balloons.

But I didn't. Got enough haunting me now. I don't need him, too.

i hate those roadside memorials as well.

here, a few years ago, south bound on I-95, there were a bunch of cars stopped/parked, to hold a "mass' at the location. i was going north. someone stopped to look, actually stopped in the travel lane. a biker could not stop. he slammed into that stopped car, looking at the stopped/parked cars, at the memorial.....i don't know what happened after that, but i can only imagine. my question would have been, when the state troopers arrived, who was at fault (along with that idiot stopped in the travel lane?)

Yeh, I don't know when it became tradition to put balloons and flowers at a crash site. Never used to see that, now it's everywhere. Some of 'em maintain it for years.

That's Traditional over here...you will see Roadside Plaques/ Posies scattered Countrywide...but the Balloons and Toys associated with Children's deaths are usually confined to the Burial Plot along with Teddy Bears and such likes...For what it's worth, when my Parents were Buried I tossed 2 Cigarettes and a Match in after them...no doubt some will laugh at that...it eased my sorrow a bit...

Not sure leaving beer and wine at the site a drunk killed himself and almost someone else is appropriateo_O Maybe a toilet so the ones that he almost killed can....well you know;)
if you noticed, i was referring to what geronimo said...at a grave site, at a cemetery. that's where i'd assume, his mom and dad were buried at..???

i go visit my grand parents grave twice a month, and i will see wine glasses and beer cans', full cans mind you, on top of the graves. some people leave flowers, some leave toys (for the babyland they have there).

I just don't believe in visiting graveyards. There's no sense in it to me. The people who were aren't there. They're in the hearts. minds and memories of their survivors. Leaving flowers and gifts for a dead person is just like idol worship. They don't know and they don't care what sort of plant material or other goods are left out to rot or be collected and thrown away by the groundskeeper. When I'm planted or burned or whatever, I don't want people wasting their time or money on that kind of nonsense. Have a big ol' gathering and a party afterward, then just remember the laughs and lessons while going about your day. That's what I want.

Leaving balloons and flowers by the roadside is the same as littering to me.

Lets just agree to differ...My Parents were a big part of my life and still are even though they died over 23 yrs ago...what may not make sense to some people is Important to others...To me visiting a Graveyard is akin to visiting them in their home and speaking to them...I have them in my Heart and Mind as fresh today as when I last saw them alive and well...As for Idol Worship...I prefer to describe it as "Remembering" when I leave a small bouquet of Flowers and say a quick Prayer...

my dad this past April 1st, in Hospice care and literally he died in my arms that evening.

he was 92 years old. i had to do things not too many people do and i had to learn fast, and frankly am still learning.

his mom/dad are buried in the same cemetery, but different sections as where our grave site is.

dad was cremated and is actually in his urn, in mom's bedroom. when she dies, she too will be cremated and booth will be laid to rest, at our family plot.

i had to pick out the gravestone, and decide on the engraving. i had to make final arrangements at the funeral home as mom was a wreck.

now, i have never mentioned this, but my dad was indeed, a laborer at that very same cemetery, and worked there till his retirement.

he would take his lunch time, go over to his parents grave, and personally trim the grass around thier stone.

when i went to "visit" grandma/grandpa's site, i noticed something out of place.

grand dad was a WWI vet. but he had no markings of such.

i called the VA and inquired on a plaque to place on his stone. i was told that (thru records), the government paid for the stone and engraving, as such, he was not entitled to this special plaque.

why my dad's brother did not have any WWI engraved on the stone, i will never know, he is dead too.

so now, like my dad's arrangements, i had to set this right.

i went to the office of the cemetery, and was able to obtain an American flag, which i did not know they hand out, for the asking..again, i was and still am new to death.

then i noticed no flag holder for him as well, again, no markings grand dad was a WWI vet.

i went to the main office this time at the cemetery and found out...just ask for one..holy....shyte....

so i planted the flag holder, and placed the flag in it, then they also gave me a plastic vase, and i had artificial flowers i put in, for grandma

i "visit" the gravesite, as i want to make sure the flag is still standing tall, and the flowers are there, for them. you should see the "abandoned grave sites there. the flat grave stones (that we have for grandparents) are on some graves sunk into the ground. my grand parents stone was slightly sunk in as well, and i asked for it to be raised up. they did, no charge. now the stone is even with the ground, not sunken in.

i never used to visit the graveyard before. but dad's recent dying and his dedicated way of taking care of his parents grave, well........

like father, like son......

dad by the way, for the past 2 years, was unable to go to his parents grave site, as he was unable to drive anymore, and sadly, he never asked me to take him, which i most certainly would have.

I visited my dad's parents graves once with my dad.

I've never heard or seen him talk about it once. I went back on my own and they look like they've never been seen since the day dad showed me where they were.

Don't complain too much about our funeral & burial customs.

For Hindus & Sikhs, it's customary to have open air cremations.

They set the body on top of a pile of wood & burn it while friends and family stand around and watch. Not in a coffin or wrapped up in anything either.

injun, i simply cannot debate you or anyone else on how they feel about visiting the gravesites or customs, it is what it is for everyone. traditionally the Irish have a party afterwards to celebrate the life of the dead one. the Italians (my family) sort of do the same thing. you want no one to waste money, that is cool. mom and dad did not want anything either. in fact, the cremation, the viewing of dad and everything else, was private.

but we as in how we respect the dead family, light a candle on holidays, birthdays. we either put fresh of artificial flowers on the grave site, and YES, the groundskeepers (like my late dad was), do remove them after x amount of time.

i am not in favor of roadside memorials as you and perhaps many others on this site. i find them to be littering as well, especially when they rot, and get tossed about the landscaping in bad weather.

Geronimo is an Irishman, in Ireland, and as such, i know what he is saying and feels. i am second generation Italo-American, and grew up with these custom's or passages handed down.

you as a native American have yours(customs). and so on and so forth. i respect that. as i'd hope mine and Geronimo's is respected as well.

we were asked at the funeral home, if anyone wanted to witness the cremation. we all refused, we have total faith in the funeral home, as dad once worked for them too, as a parking lot attendant when he was younger. right now, they are into the 5th generation of family owned.

By witness they meant watch the body being put in the oven and it's door being closed. Not the same thing.

There's an abandoned nut house a few miles south of here with some ATV trails nearby.

In the corner of the property there's some old maintenance buildings with pumps and air compressors & a small sewage treatment plant with trees growing in it and stuff.

There was a big cast iron crematorium big enough to roast an elephant in, with a smoke stack that's still standing. Lots of rumors & conspiracy theories about that.

My neighbor's brother stole it for scrap iron about 5 years ago. Said it took him 2 days to cut it up and haul it to the recycling place. I bet he spent more on gasoline, oxygen and acetylene than he got from the scrap metal. :coocoo:

My neighbor himself is obsessed with bricks. He has bricks from famous buildings in Chicago and he ordered a brick from some Nazi concentration camp they tore down. I don't know what he paid for it but I laughed at him and tried to sell him part of the yellow brick road in Oz.

Anyway he wants to knock that smokestack down somehow just to steal a few individual bricks from it. :coocoo:
