Pictorial: How much pressure will a 2 liter soda bottle hold before it explodes?

Duck

Sarcastic remark goes here
5/16" drill bit. Old bicycle inner tube.
Trimmed with scissors forming a gasket, then pushed through from the inside.

Obviously, I used a locking tire chuck & started with a regulated supply set at 20 psi. The bottle was rock hard with just 20 psi in it.

But then I cranked it up incrementally, allowing time for the air to fill the bottle each time.

60 psi:

> 80 psi:

At this point, I popped the hose off the coupler on the regulator, allowing the Mountain Dew bottle to drain.

As you can see, the bottle had stretched and had wrinkles in it.

The cap was domed out a little too.

So I closed the tank valve on the compressor & connected the hose to an unregulated supply.

Using another hose and my blow gun I let some air out until the compressor kicked on, to make sure it was at its max, which is 155 psi.

Then I opened the valve and dumped the full 155 psi into the already stretched plastic bottle.

(drumroll)

Nothing. :(

I was beginning to think we're going to have to set it on the BBQ grill.

But then after about 30 seconds, ... BOOM!

Loud as hell, like something you can only buy in Texas. :D

Here's The Geezer posing with the shrapnel:

The cap was intact and didn't even come out of the tire chuck.

Tune in next week when we fill one halfway with gasoline, pressurize it to 100 psi & toss it in a campfire.

I woulda guessed a hell of a lot less than 155.

The jet engines I worked on in the Navy where Preserved/shipped in containers and pressurized to 5.

You hadda make sure you bled the air off before you started to loosen the bolts to "un-can" them otherwise they may have blown the top off.

So we was told........:dunno:

After it blew up I immediately shut the tank valve off & looked at the main gauge on the compressor & it was showing 145.

Due to the release of whatever was in the hose before I shut the valve off, I'm just going to go with 150 psi or so as the burst point.

I oughta try it again at 140 psi & just leave it for a few minutes. The bottle was already beginning to stretch & fail at 140.

I also need to soak some of the shrapnel in gasoline to see if it's a type of plastic that can be dissolved in gasoline.

Doubt it, I've got old gas in a soda bottle.

Nah I just thought about it.

I will have to wait until they harvest the corn because I'll need more open space.

Well I suppose I could fill it halfway with water and inflate to burst with a video camera set up & see how far the water flies.

And I wouldn't just throw it on a fire and run. I'd have to find another way.

Like set it on gasoline soaked rags & launch bottle rockets at it or something.

500 feet of speaker wire, car battery, inverter & steel wool.

Something like that.

Hook the speaker of a cellphone up to an ignitor and then call it....o_O

Just take a 2 liter bottle, pour a half inch of liquid nitrogen, cap it and put it in a metal garbage can with a lid.
And wait and wait and wait.
Might be 15 minutes, might be half an hour.
But when it blows, that lid will be 25' in the air.
And you won't find a piece of the bottle bigger than a sliver.
It's awesome or so I've been told.:rolleyes-80:
