i can assure you, that in my earlier years, i had done long haul, in trucks that had NO jake brakes...

good times...crank up the a/c, even in the deadest of winter....!!!
There be a lot more drivers giving grades proper respect if they learned how to go down without a Jake. 30-35 mph off a big grade ain't slow, it's fast after having to go down at 10-15 mph!
 
Good to know for those days you really can't use a jake due to snow pack and ice.

Modern electronic engines due a decent job of traction control on the Jake. It catches slippage before you even feel it. But using that to your advantage is not something I'd ever encourage most drivers to explore.
Is that why some have a 20 mph speed limit for trucks? Back when no jake brakes?

I would imagine that's the case. 5 or 6% almost always called for low range.

That's what they say. Considering where the consequences of that thing not performing optimally might land ya, maybe relyin' on some ol' trucker judgement an' low range might be a better idea?

Sharp curves at the bottom of the grade with homes at the edge of city limits just beyond usually convinces the powers what be to post restrictive truck speeds.

Contrary to popular opinion, wheelslip isn't an instant crash. Let me modify that: transitioning to wheelslip from a steady load isn't that big a deal.

What bites drivers in the butt is going from freewheeling to full jake, shock loading the tires. That is a recipe for disaster especially in cornering. Coming down hanging on the jakes, and having a tire or two slip is pretty much a non-event, unless your being stupid and doing things like going from dry to icy pavement under full jakes. Coming down snowpack, you're already (or should be) going a bit slower than normal, so you're not putting as much retarding power to the ground. Finding a spot with a bit less traction just means getting lightly on the brakes to spread out the needed retarding power over more axles and slowing a bit to lower the needed retardation. A little drop in velocity really lowers the energy dissipation needed to maintain speed. (Kinetic Energy = mass x velocity^2) You don't even need to come off the jakes unless there's been a major change in traction, the slightly lower speed will usually be enough to allow one to continue using the jakes. If the jakes continue to cut out for slippage, then it's time to change tactics to brakes only and at a vastly reduced speed to avoid overheating the brakes.

I get where you're coming from IP, but I think it does a disservice to good drivers to pretend like everyone should adhere to Least Common Denominator practices.

Y'all go ahead and trust the computer if ya like. It's there because we insist on throwing marginally trained drivers in the deep end holding 80,000 pounds, and hope that there's enough technology plastered on to keep them out of trouble enough of the time so the general public "feels" safe. That's so that the fat cats profiting off of the situation can throw the folks who get caught holding the shitty end of the stick under the bus without getting themselves dirty.
