def get a co detector there only 30 bucks at wally world but that 30 bucks could save your life

I asked the boss years ago why they don't have APU's.

Van Wyk, Inc. has a fuel bonus program unlike the laughable ones the big fleets have. Most drivers achieve it.

4 CPM off the "hub" (qualcomm) if you keep your speed below 66 mph for 90 or 95% of total moving time, idling below 10% in winter, 30% in summer.

A couple years ago they tweaked it to allow 35% in the hottest months, and a little more in the coldest months.

Because the fuel bonus is actually achievable, drivers actually gave a crap & would follow those guidelines.

So the fleet average idling time is very low, so low that the expense of an APU won't be recouped in the 500,000 miles they run each truck before they trade them in.

Driver comfort obviously isn't a concern to them.

But with the new emissions systems being so unreliable & with extensive evidence showing that idling greatly increases the emissions system problems, and with long periods of downtime combined with failed diagnoses & the problems not getting fixed right the first time, it might be time for them to consider APU's.

They need a setup that keeps the coolant, fuel & DEF warm in addition to maintaining the batteries and providing AC in the summer.

Keeping the coolant as warm as possible will reduce the amount of time the engine takes to reach full operating temperature, resulting in less crap being blown into the global warming filter.

just for shits and giggles do they allow you to bring a genset:confused-96:.

No. Why would they?

I suppose you could carry a little generator on your passenger floor & chain it to the catwalk at night to run the block heater, if you really wanted to.

it's the non-tangibles that you get from an APU that are hard to put value to.

The reduced wear on the engine from idling, reduced emissions issues, etc. The issues I've had from my APU have been design issues from Thermo-King and I have changed those issues. Re-wired corroded wires etc.

so you won't roast to death in summer and freeze in winter:rolleyes:

Why I don't care for APUs.

I'm across the road from a truck with an APU. It's a brand new truck and brand new APU. I don't know what brand it is. It starts and stops like the reefers @Duck quacks about and sounds just like a lawnmower. I remember the vibration the TriPac made when it ran on that Cascadia I had and I remember getting annoyed with the diesel exhaust smell that would waft into my cab sometimes. I've lived for nearly five years without one and really don't miss it.

If I ever do go work for WalMart directly, I wonder whether they'd get mad if I turn it off so it won't start at all..

First off, if an apu is working correctly they are not that loud. If your cascadia was wafting diesel fumes into cab, you need to get that fixed. Apu's shouldn't do that. As for not using an APU they provide, if you never end up with dead batts and dont idle the truck i dont think they would care. MY driver has an apu, and i would be pissed if he was wasting my fuel and damaging my dpf system with excessive idling when there is an apu. If you want to sleep in hot/cold weather and not use the APU im sure they wont mind. But if you cost them money while idleing or need a jump start they should be pissed at you.
