Permit weight

Use need to quit thinking like use are dragging a box any more. Use need to spec a truck proper for flatbed

Mine are 53” from center to center and I pull flatbed freight just fine. No skirts for ground clearance because we go to a lot of job sites. Also have that custom short chrome bumper up front for the same reason.

If you don’t go to job sites and stay on the highways and paved lots a city boy truck is fine.

Use need to get use 5th wheel as high as use can with a different riser
And ramps will be a huge help with that

If use keep your 5th low use run the chance of smashing trailer dolly legs or hooking the frame

Also running the 5th all the way back helps lots for clearance too

Agreed but part and parcel of flatbed is being off road
It’s not as bad as running the patch but it’s a whole different ball game from running a box

TMC sets their trucks up nicely

You need to stop talking like an ignorant fuck if you want to be taken seriously.

A 60" spread gets you no benefits. Even if you do use the formula, "The Man" holds you down and calls it a closed tandem and restricts you to 34,000#.

And I've actually got a 60"spread on the trailer. it gives me no benefits for a permit unless I open it up to 10'2".

What's your gears in the rearends there flatbedder....

Unless it's a 3.70 or taller, you got a sissy boy city truck.

Bullshit. I can permit more up here on a 60” drive than a narrow 55” drive

Same as I can load more on a tridem up here or out west.

The USA is whack on axle weights

I have 3.42:1 in this hunk. Which I whole heartedly admit is a city boy truck. My manual had 3.58:1. Our heavy haul trucks have 3.73:1.

Since I run south of the 48th, your rules and regulations mean squat to us. But thanks for the insight any way.

Michigan gave me 26,000 on a open spread

Use are talking like a box yanker. Permits is different than bride weights

I’m just trying to help use since use are new to flatbed work

Whoever sold use that truck should be ashamed of themselves
So let's see. Let's make a clean list of what Ontario's saying makes me all fucked up.

Because originally, This truck was a bull hauler for 4 years since it was new.

Especially since he's pointing shit out on pictures before I took the truck off the lot and signed purchase paperwork.

3.36 rears

No work lights or beacons

No ramps

Low 5th wheel/too far forward

Skirts

Short rubber

No saddle boxes

Set back front axle

Closed tandem drives

Not enough ground clearance

What am I forgetting

When you can talk normal..

We'll converse.

Otherwise, go blow smoke up somewhere else.
I watched a “driver” in a Volvo drop a trailer tire off a curb, drag the axle all the way around a parking lot, run over a fence and a water hose, still dragging the 53’ step deck trailer, and have to get a couple cars moved. Luckily he didn’t drop the truck off the curb and cause more carnage

Same set up as whats use have

Yet, this guy, with a hood, set forward axle, wide drives, 5th set up tall and set all the way back, walked out of the EXACT same spot as he did, with a 53’ trailer and NO issues

I’m telling you THEY DON’T work for FLATBED work. I don’t know why I’m just going off what I’ve witnessed

don’t go over 80k, but I scoot up the hills in the left lane just fine with my 3:42 gears.

I could go over 80k without a problem.

I could also do everything I do now with 2:64 gears and not have a problem. If I was planning on having this truck beyond another year or two, that is exactly what I would have.

Either of these two gears could handle plenty more weight. If running heavy haul, I might yank the 13 out in favor of an 18, and might opt out of the 2:64 gears, but they could handle it, plenty of people doing it now.

The high RPM mess that was being talked about is about 20 years behind the times. Even with my series 60, I’m just fine down to 1200rpm, not lugging it at all. With more power, I keep the rpm higher than that simply for more fuel flow and lower exhaust temps, but the engine is not lugging at all.

Up a hill between 1450 and 1500 in my motor is where it’s at. And my motor is considered an old dirty motor.

New motors? These things aren’t lugging even down to 900rpm, and doing great with direct drive transmissions and gears down even below 2:1 at this point.

Not too many out here running mechanical 80’s engines anymore, it’s time for everyone to get past trying to apply that thinking to today’s technology.

If you’re thinking heavy haul your rears won’t handle it. You’d need 46K rears or heavier
What people don’t understand about specking a truck for its purpose is weights and leverage
Heavy haul guys are gonna have 4.10s or 4.30s or deeper

Buddy of mine is 65,000 empty and stacked think he said two axle jeep and 2 axle booster he’d laugh his ass off if you said 2.64s are ok in heavy haul. He’s running a newer star car with a Cummins I think

These guys are running modern mills and they the ones teaching me to drive

Buddy with a ‘07 CAT says the same keep the RPMs up or you’ll tear out your diffs. He watched a driver buy a truck and within two months he was doing diffs because of box yanking style driving

Whatever. Just trying to help the guy out same as others take time to help me out it’s the flatbed way

@mndriver

I just measured I’ve got a little over 13” of clearance from the bottom of my tanks and yet they still get dented. My front bumper is closer to 14” and seems to be ok

So measure use skirts and everything else anything under 13” use are further ahead to remove now or move higher
