He could do what a lot of us used to do and use the loadboard or trip lease(does anybody do that anymore).

Funny I was at mercer and maverick. Made more money at maverick and was home more.

Let me guess, with Mercer, you were one of those guys who waited in the truckstop for the 'perfect' load and at Maverick they told you to take the load or go home?

Wrong guess. I tried to limit my bounce at mercer. There was also a bottom dollar the truck needs to pull for. Sometimes I would have to bounce farther than planned. Sometimes I would take something I did not want, but did to get a better paying rate in a better location. Sometimes I stayed on the load board and did short work while waiting for a decent load. Bottom line to me is this. I am out here to make money. What good is a ungoverned, long nose pete with no qualcomm if I have to stay out a month to make less than what I did at maverick and be home on weekends?

How did they get the impression they own you? I had a couple of bad experiences leasing my truck to a company and finally went independent. The chances of you making money leasing YOUR truck to a company is pretty low. I'm a control freak and I hated that I couldn't' control where I went and what was lined up for me when I got there. Too many idiots who get you someplace without a preload out.

Good luck, but you're going to have a rough time finding the "right" company for you. What works for someone else could be a "nightmare" for you.

Air Ride, Inc did me good until they started losing contracts.

Hill Brothers was horrible and I sat a lot waiting for things to get better while my truck payment got behind.

Meadowlark Trans out of Montana had me driving all over hell for Power Only loads that someone else already picked up. If you ever hear the name Roy Carter, RUN!

Independence and picking my own loads was the best way for me. But Hill Brothers and Meadowlark got me so far behind that I would eventually have to sell my truck because I couldn't' catch up.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone LandStar. Closest thing to be an Indy that you will get.
 
Lease to my company. They treat the company drivers and the owner operators very well.

The freight is consistent and pays well.

I know Mercer is on the cheap side, they haul the same stuff out of Alcoa, Massena NY for 1/3 less then we do,, we have cheap agents/freight also(U.S. Steel), I just don't run for them, we have an agent in Owensboro KY who pays $3,300(minimum, more if it is a multi stop) to the truck to go from there to Montreal, I will dead head through 2 agents (they do not like that) territory or more to haul for him, our Lafayette IN office pays $2,200 to Massena, the stuff I haul out of home pays over $3 to get out, But if you are in Philly, Chicago or Detroit, you will be lucky to get $2, so I bounce, it pays for me in the long run. And I am usually home 3 days a week. If I knew how to do it,I would put up a settlement sheet to show I'm not talking through my hat but I'm lucky just to figure out how to turn this thing on.

I rarely get to Colorado. I've been stuck out in New England for last last couple of weeks.
 
I owned my own truck for 14 years. I was leased to 3 companies during that time and the only time anyone tried to tell me what to do was when TMC closed the FX division I was leased to. TMC started telling me how to drive my truck and I, along with almost every other o/o there, quit.

Check out Ace Doran. All o/o. They have cheap agents too but I didn't haul their freight. The agents with the high dollar freight won't tell you about the good loads until you show that you're dependable.

I had one agent tell me to name my price and when I could deliver a 550 mile load. An hour later he called back and said $2/mile more if I got there 2 hours sooner than I said. I had allowed a little extra time and told him noon. I made it by 9 am.

Been there, done that. They lost PACCAR accounts to Werner until Werner shot themselves in the ass with their teams shut down by ELOGS. I lost my job, DAMN good pay and a beautiful truck with Air Ride because they filed bankruptcy due to a cut throat mega carrier and their BS.

I know....that's different thread but further proof that ELOGS don't help, they hinder!
