My experience with Werner.

Luap

Rookie Driver
OK, I will be graduating drivers school on the 30th (assuming I pass).

I got a pre-hire from Werner within 4 days of starting school. I have set up my orientation for Feb 9th. I have not recieved my information package in the mail because they got my address wrong. The lady in recruiting is very nice. After we discovered the problem she emailed me the info. First thing I noticed is the poor directions for getting to the hotel. If I had been driving instead of the bus/cab set up, and I had not looked at google maps I may have not found it unless very observant of possible signs. If you don't want to take the bus they will reimburse you for fuel expense up to the value of the bus ticket (which by the way does NOT cover the cost of the fuel).

I will update as often as possible how the experience goes. I am a very objective person.

Looking forward to your updates.

If you like, feel free to do this here, or via the blog area. Either way will be great and I look forward to hearing how you experience goes, and helping wherever I can.

First thing I noticed is the poor directions

Welcome to Truck Driving......:p Sorry could not resist...Good Luck, hope you succeed in the new venture. Keep us informed, like I said in a different post somewhere around here. I have heard good and bad thing's about Werner..

The most important thing is to stick it out for a year or so, then you can get about any job you want..as long as the record stays clean!

Thanks guys. Yes I typically am a very loyal employee. As long as things can be worked through and errors corrected in a reasonable manner I am willing to stick around. However, I will not stand for outright failure to deal with issues that arrise. I have worked in several different work environments from the military to house framing crews to wharehouses to coorporate offices. I believe I can get along with and maintain good communication with virually anyone...hopefully this will lead to successful trucking regaurdless of the company I work for.

Luap,if you want any information at all about Werner just ask I drove for them for almost 3 yrs.I can tell you exactly what training is like.I will send u a private message with directions to the place.I assume you're going to Omaha for orientation?

Thanks, feel free to post any info here. I am in Florida so I am going to Lakeland.

dude, training is alright with them, be prepared to get screwed when you get your own truck, take a camera and take pics of the truck when you get it and pics of the truck afterwards. you wont sit alot, but you will be swapping or spliting loads alot. be prepared to drive in heavy snow because depending on the load, they will push you. when i worked for them, i found nothing about them that i liked. i worked for them for a year and the longest run i got was 1100 miles to new jersey, that was my first run and new jersey is pure hell

Please keep us informed. I to was a werner stooge but was luckly enough to escape. I heard they went thru many changes and I was wondering if it really helped out. Oh and I heard that they are tryin to rebuild there flatbed fleet.
Lakeland, thats my favorite terminal. I gots my girls there. They took care of me and were total sweethearts. But recently found out one of them got fired due to unexplained reasons. If u want to make money there stay with your trainer for a month after you finsh training cause they will send you home to rot. This is the time alot of guys quit cause theres just too many people and no trucks to keep them moving.
Be safe and keep alert with them. Best of luck to you.

i too am a new roadmaster grad last friday and have orientation 3/20/09 in lakeland. I am looking foward to it and am teaming with a friend who is a few weeks behind me in school.

Hello all, OK so I have completed about 225 hours of my training. First off lets just say that I have not yet personally been wronged in any way by the company. However Through talking with many other Werner drivers, and there are a lot of them who are not happy, I have learned quite a bit about where the problems lie.

The major component related to the current issues is the government subsidies the company gets for creating a new job. From what I understand Werner gets $15,000 for each new job it creates as long as the employee works for 90 days and is not fired. The catch here is that Werner keeps a new student in the training process for about 8 weeks and they have a policy of an employee can take up to 30 days leave of absence without being terminated. At the end of the 30 days if no contact is made then it is assumed the employee has quit. So they pay the student 350 bucks a week for 8 weeks (2800 bucks) and then send them home to await truck assignment. if it goes past the 30 days they are free of the employee but have still made the 90 day criteria and thus make thier 15k which means they make roughly 12k per student just to waste our time.

There are some students getting lucky though and recieving truck asignments. The key to getting one is to be in the right place, right time and be looking for the "team driver OTR" positions.

They have several types of positions but I think what they are looking to achieve is to have solo drivers do regional positions and what they call "net-ops" which is basically a courier run from one regional terminal to another regions terminal. So a regional driver pickes up a load at the shipper and drops it in a terminal, net-ops takes it from there to another terminal close to consignee and then that regions driver delivers to the consignee. the key here is that net-ops makes about .03 cents per mile less than regular drivers because they are practically garunteed a good number of miles a week (usually around 2500-3000) and the regional guys are paid less for the short runs versus the long hauls. Therefore it is less cost for Werner. The remaining drivers are being coerced into team driving situations where they could get longer runs but they split the money with another driver. Even then it seems like you are basically just driving a 24 hour truck that picks up the slack the regional and net-ops can't handle. Student/Trainer sets are treated like a team and thus get a good amount of runs especially since the students are basically free workers and the trainers get about 65% of the pay for both his and the students miles...which is less than what they would have to pay a regular team.

All in all the whole thing makes perfect sense from an employers point of view, however the company slogan "Werner cares, we care" is a load of garbage. It is all about the dollar and they couldn't care less about the employees. In fact I do believe they are slowly removing thier solo long haul drivers by simply starving them of loads and waiting for them to quit. I don't know how this strategy could possibly be good for thier reputation but they have no shortage of drivers so again...the money is what they care about.

The funny thing is they claim to have zero debt which is astounding for a trucking company of this size and yet they still pass all of thier economic problems down to the employees rather than taking what would amount to minor hits to thier profit margin. 2 weeks ago they reduced thier "down-time" pay from whatever it was to 20 dollars per 24 hours (hell I used to make 21 bucks an HOUR at my last job) and this week they cut the 401k company match from 50% to 25% for all employees. So we the little guys barely making a living get to suffer more and more just so the shareholders can maintain thier profit percentages.

The other kicker is when they tell you they have no trucks available yet every terminal you go to has brand new untouched petes and internationals parked in nice orderly lines. In fact I was told that they have over 1000 brand new rides that have been sitting for over a year. One guy told me they buy them in bulk at ridiculously low prices and then sell them a year or two later individually for huge profits.

My choice so far is to drive OTR as a team (already have a guy to team with) and to see how the truck assignment thing goes. I will be highly upset if I go through all of this just to be sent home.

I will let you know more on how things go soon.

Oh one other thing...a lot of people have been wondering about trainers. I personally know 4 people going through training here right now and each has a different experience. Myself I have a 60 year old Jamaican fella who is hard to understand, has marginal hygene and could give a rats ass about the stuff the "Werner drivers manual" says. He rarely does a PTI and puts minimal effort into qualcomm messages. He does however constantly get preassigned loads, is always on time, and gets paid well. I have gotten serious miles, and a lot of good experience driving in all kinds of situations, and I do all the backing.

One of my friends is on a Dollar General account with his trainer. He is only allowed to drive from 10 am to 8 pm, he did not back up one time until he hit the 200 hour mark and then the guy had him back up all day over and over in an empty parking lot to fill his required backing log, he has zero hygene and does home time every weekend so my friends getting low miles and lots of down time in a hotel.

Another guy is riding along with a seeming training god. Everything about the guy seems to be perfect except that the milage could be better. He is recieving top notch training though and I am glad he will be my teammate.

Bottom line is that every trainer will be different and almost all the solo drivers are becoming trainers because that is the highers paying gig in Werner...NOT because they are qualified to be training. If you do not mesh well or if you are not getting what you think you should it is a simple call to your manager to get reassigned. DON'T Hesitate...it is YOUR career at stake.

Nice to hear from you Luap.....Wow, now that's some really interesting information you provided...Makes sense why they continue to hire drivers that they don't need...
That's the whole problem with the trucking industry, they don't give a crap about the drivers, it's all about their bottom line...

Truer words have never been spoken! And something for the new drivers to remember. Whatever a trucking company is trying to sell you as "really good for you", watch out! They would not be doing it if it didnt benefit THEM.

Hey Luap glad to see you're back.Werner has'nt done you wrong yet because you're knew to the company.Once you start getting the exp on your own, knowing the rules they have ect, your tune will change how you feel about the company. Those net ops you mentione are a pain in the ass as far as i'm concerned. They complain because they either don't get the miles on they don't like their paycheck. So the drivers have to suffer by giving up their loads and drop them off to the nearest term or drop yard for them while you're waiting for another load that could take hrs before you get a load.Don't ever count on keeping your loads especially the ones with good miles. There's a 99%chance you won't be able to keep it.You'll either have to swap lds split it out for net ops to take or another driver.

Yeah I know things will change when I get assigned a truck however I am putting myself in the best position possible by running "team werner" OTR. If there is any chance at all that is it. Also since I feel I have a pretty good grasp on the reality of what is going on within the company instead of just accepting the BS they feed the new drivers, I feel I will be in a better position to make descisions that will benefit me.

My trainer is currently on his home time and he dropped me off at home for the weekend. I am here till Sunday night and am getting paid for it even though it does not count against my PTO since it was HIS time not mine.

Also something I have discovered since I been home...there is a little computer generated bonus that has been quietly added to my pay stubbs. No one had ever mentioned it before and in fact none of my other friends have gotten any. I called my student driver manager and he said it is based on the students activity and progress. Aparently I have been driving so much that I have been exceeding the typical average amount of hours per week and thus got little added pay amounts. One was $13, the next was $39, and last week I got one for $69. He said that was one of the highest ones he had heard of. That must be why I am almost 60 hours ahead of my teammate who started at the same time. I am going to be backing off now in the hopes to let him catch up so they don't have an additional excuse to send me home to wait for him to finish.

I will get back on here in a few weeks to let you know how test out and assignment went.

Keep the wheels turning.

Hey Patricia, yeah IO have gotten used to the load swapping and splitting already. My trainer and I dealt with it a lot...but here is the key...you need to have the good relationship with the manager. We got stuck one time in Laredo for 2 days and once for repairs in Dallas terminal for 3. Besides that we never sat still. we had a constant stream of loads no matter how many times we got split. 1000 mile trip or (4) 250 mile trips...really makes no difference to me as long as we keep rolling, which we did. I just hope I can get my team on the "go-to" list for our DM.

Laup it sounds like you're doing real well keep it up.As far as having a good dispatcher,I had an awesome dispatcher. Her and I got along real good. She's told me many times I was her favorite dispatcher. We would just shoot the shit when she was'nt dispatching that's what kept me there so long. But that did'nt pay the bills.I had to swap and split almost every load I had because I did'nt have the legal hrs to get it there or they'd give me a load with too much time so I did'nt win for losing. But since you're teaming you'll probably have better luck then if you went solo.
