Kidney Stone Update

Since 2007, I've suffered from kidney stones at the rate of about 2-3 per month. I've been through stone panels, diet studies, parathyroid testing and all kinds of other fun activities to find the cause.

In November of 2014 I switched from Diet Coke to regular Coke. I haven't had a kidney stone since then.

2-3 a month is unheard of (at least by me)! Did you normally piss it out?

So stuff in diet coke increases kidney stones?

You mean diet coke will cause kidney stones? So what's the difference between diet and regular coke, both are equally as bad for you.Maybe it was something in your food intake that was causing it.I'm glad the stones haven't returned but I would get a couple opinions on what you think the cause of it was.I drink diet coke like no tomorrow.

I heard the sugar substitute in Diet increases your chance of cancer, but neither causing or curing kidney stones.:confused-96:

Wow! congrats, but careful on the soda! I'd suggest they also do a 24 hour urine collection where they see what you give off in high amounts in your urine (uric acid, calcium) and it will help them see what kind of stones you make if you don't have one to analyze.

@Bored Insane : I normally passed the stones on my own, but on two separate occasions I had to have surgery to remove stones.

@DrDaliah : We did a couple of 24 hour stone panels and they were both very high in calcium. That led the doctor to send me to an endocrinologist because they thought my parathyroid glands were out of whack. There were fine though so I got to keep them.

In addition to leaving the Diet Coke alone I also started taking 1000 iu of vitamin D every day.

@patriciajnsn : The only change I made was a switch from Diet to regular Coke. I still have the same lifestyle (other than starting my obsession with golf this past spring) and still have the same terrible diet I've always had.

Have you ever considered 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar every day to acidify your urine? Might help break down those calcium deposits.

I have a friend who suffered horribly from pseudogout. His Chinese wife started him drinking cider vinegar every day and he hasn't had an attack in years.

My mom used that stuff for a few things, even hiccups.

Well done! Keep us posted!!!!!!!!

Kidney stones are no fun. Just be thankful you aren't in a worse shape and can still drive.

If things deteriorate further they may have you start avoiding phosphates and if that is the case you won't be able to have any carmel colored sodas (Coke, Dr. pepper, etc.)
