Sooooo happy!!!
My CDL physical expires in 10 days. The physical is $200, then my license expires June of 2025. That is another $195 and another physical for $200. I have to do the physical every year and the company always paid for it.
So, I go to the DMV this morning to downgrade from my Class A to a regular Class E license. The lady asked if I was employed and said no, I was retired. She said, then why give it up if you don't want to? If you aren't employed or operating a commercial motor vehicle for compensation or for the state, you can keep the CDL without a medical certificate and you just have to self certify with the state.
Alright! I love it. She asked if I still wanted to keep all of my endorsements. I have doubles, triples, tanker and Haz-Mat endorsements. I said yes. She said I would have to take the Haz-Mat test. I told her I thought that I could wing it and she told me which computer to go to.
I took the 30 question test and missed 2. You can only miss 6. I surprised myself. Then off to another desk for the background check paperwork and fingerprinting. I'm now good until 2029 and don't have to take one of those stupid physicals or be subject to any drug screens. I hated that more than anything. The place you have to go to is always full of parolees doing drug tests for their P.O.
Anyway, unless I get employed again, I'm good to go. I didn't want to give that license up, but $200/year and $400 every 4 years doesn't make it worth it. $200 every 4 years I can handle. Plus there's a little cred that goes with it if you're ever pulled over. The cop knows you're a driver and a ticket is bad news for you.
