Is it legal? (to carry a weapon)

I'd suggest anyone take some Brazilian Ju Jitzu or similar class that teaches you some form of street fighting....

And realize that the punk on the other side looking to tear your head off isn't there playing with you.

Because when it comes down to it, you aren't going to have time to pull a gun to defend yourself.

I support the Krav Maga and I support the Taurus 38spl. both are good to know/to have when walking across a parking lot & walking between trailers. I disagree with "you aren't going to have time to pull a gun to defend yourself" that's why situational awareness, reaction time and what you react with have to be on our minds. Split second decision making! and obviously not all situations call for engaging with a firearm.
The love and Joy of my life( besides my wife) are for mainly if I get awakened, (they get a surprise if they don't pass the identify test)
One day on Hwy.101 along the coast in CA, he jumped up on the passenger steps and was met with a surprise, did not have to fire!
@Copperhead the hammerless is good especially if in your pocket or in a women's purse.

No call 911.webp

So, if I don't like black, yellow, brown, red or even white people, homosexuals, straight, bisexuals, women, men, childred, democrats, republicans, independents, young people, middle aged, old people and on and on, I can make up my own rules to discriminate against them? Is that really what you just said?
I dislike all the above for starters--And several other groups as well.

Only things I've carried over the years was machetes, knifes and a crossbow. I've only had one armed robbery attempt but I hit them with the truck and called it in at a truckstop a few miles down the road. I want to get a 1911 for recreational use but for protection it would be too much for the chance of hitting someone by accident is not something I want to live with

Training and the proper ammo will limit that.
Tazz there's a difference between training/ammo and heat of the moment. I've got training I come from a family of Marines and Rangers (I don't claim to be either) I just don't trust hand guns they are not made for accuracy as a rule and bullets can travel through people at close range

And that's coming from an instructor.

I'll add.

If you believe that pistols are not made for accuracy, you have some really big misconceptions on their capabilities and a person practiced in pistol.

Your right I'm more experienced in rifles and bows. My level of experience with hand guns I know my accuracy limit is about 10 yards on very very good day with my dad's ex service 1911 all others in the family safes I'm worse so maybe it's an judgment of my own abilities. As far as caliber I would really like to know which caliber could be shot at a human at a range of three feet and near 100% not go through that person and into another cause I would buy that gun other wise I'll stick to knives for sleeper berth protection

.38 Special, .380 ACP, .25 ACP, .22 LR, .22 magnum, 9mm Just to get started.

Don't buy +P or +P+ ammo.

often times, it's not even the fact you have a big gun, just a GUN is enough to cause a bad guy to back away.

The mental game of using a gun is just as real as the physical impact.

It's more the persons attitude than anything else more than a gun that will keep you safe. Do you put yourself into positions where harm will likely come to you? if you do, then stop doing it.

Why would you go into north Chicago any earlier than you need to? Same can be said with any other shady location we go to.

Okay back on track. 22LR and 9mm will go through a human body so those are out. Never bothered with .38 before and not really interested in doing so now. I'm thinking the Taurus Judge with its ability to shoot .410 shotgun rounds would be a better truck stop round if it provides a high impact at close range but low distance of travel like shells normally do (more research needed).

As far as where i park or not I park where i can like the rest of us otr's. Shady area's are the safest and actual attacks are not a concern of mine

This is true. One year, my hunting equipment was a .44 magnum Colt Anaconda with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. Got my deer at 125 yards. But I was well practiced with that revolver.

.22LR is the most deadly round in existence. More people have been killed with this round than any other. It's the preferred round for hitmen all over the world. It goes in and rattles around inside the body rather than exit.. because it's a slow moving projectile.

Shotgun shells loaded with birdshot are deadly at close range. In a truck, I would not go any higher that 4 shot. There's a lot of powder behind that scatter.

For self-defense pistol rounds, I prefer .40S&W. Large, slow-moving projectile. Hits hard, makes a big hole and does a lot of damage.

9mm, as you said, no. The reason many police departments moved away from 9mm is its propensity to deliver a through-and-through injury. They found they were hitting a subject several times and the subject kept coming. Some departments have moved back to 9mm because of money: The ammunition is cheap. Effectiveness was sacrificed for a few pennies per round.

Be careful about that hand-held shotgun. It might not be legal in all jurisdictions.

Self defense ammo has come light years in the last two decades.

If your not confident by all means please do not carry. However while nothing is fool proof, the risk is way low of a through and through, off target, and caliber has little to do with it in a hand gun. Yeah a 50BMG or .44mag is gonna travel through but a 9mm, .45, 380. SIG357, .40 can be carried and fired with minimal risk.

Best rifle pound for pound Ruger 10-22.

Redneck commentary but a good example of having the right ammo.

Gold dot filled prior to expansion and passed through the block failing to disspate the eneedy in the target. DRT performed as advertised by expanding.

Like we said pick a good ammo, and train. You do not have to get this serious

However do not just stand there and make holes in paper. Move, change mags, have someone go full rock and roll (yes fully auto is legal with the right permit and range) over your shoulder, loud music, yelling, screaming, moving......when you can put rounds on target during that worrying about a confrontation blowing your skills is lessoned.

Not only is the .22 the most common round regarding wounds and deaths, it is the preferred caliber for use by trained assassins. Especially the subsonic .22 rounds which are the best round when it comes to silencers. But those shots are going to be primarily head shots.

Regarding shotguns at close quarters, the reduced recoil rounds are very effective and make it easier for follow up shots. Many of them can be had with creative loads in them that will ruin someone's day from all the major ammo manufacturers.

And there is something to be said for other things, like bear quality pepper spray. It usually has twice the capsaicin as pepper sprays intended for humans. And of course, you can have someone holler "don't taze me bro!" while you are giving them a jolt. Both of those items are very inexpensive and effective in a pinch.

Even a fully legal marine signaling device or "flare gun" can work in a tight. May not stop someone, but only if they are a dedicated individual with some great training and real experience under fire, it will shock the snot out of them and give you some time to resort to other ways to stop them or get away.

For the women drivers, even a can of hair spray and a bic lighter can be very effective! Your own portable flame thrower. Great effect in tight quarters like a cab and sleeper if someone is trying to break in. The shock factor is pretty good.

And I love that my truck still has a real pull cord for the air horn. Some long black boot laces (hard to see at night) run from one door to the other up thru the air horn cord, and anyone opening a door is going to set off a horn blast. Will set even the best intruder off guard for a moment.

Thinking about all the alternatives available, and being willing to actually use them, can make the difference.

theboxotruth shows much of that as well.

Most HP ammo turns to FMJ shot into typical winter cloths. I learned that first hand about 10 years ago now at an instructors class I was part of. I got to actually shoot a ballistic vest that weekend.

Until I see otherwise, I have settled on a Remington Golden Sabre for my carry ammo because of the performance that day. Even as issue ammo for DHS, they still use the Gold Dot.
